View Full Version : CTDs during Dunkirk evacuation

I had several CTDs near Dunkirk, during the evacuation, each time reloaded the same saved game. The module responsible for crashes was sh3sim.act, address 0x0000196a.
The first time I tried, I was successful and made half way through the Channel ,when I had to save and quit. The saved game was corrupted.

Did anyone also had CTDs around Dunkirk? Perhaps the large amount of units and battle between them is more than my PC can handle.
I'm not sure if I want to try again, or forget the whole thing and go to my patrol area around UK...

What are your system specs?
What mods do you run?

If anything?
Even at low specs you should see very low FPS.
A CTD means there is some other problem.
And being that it's the SH3sim.act?
There's a conflict somewhere.
:hmm:

A near similar setup as mine, there is a bug attached to attacking the dunkirk area, people swear that there isn't,but there is if you attack it at the wrong angle, loads of people have had trouble trying to do it and got CTD'S,simple is.don't bother:up:

I'm at the Dunkirk again :yep:. Since my last post on this thread, I had 2 CTDs. Now I'm testing my assumption that the CTDs happen only when you're within the rendering area of Dunkirk. IIRC, on my first attempt I wasn't near the port and I didn't have a CTD.

This topic has been posted before some said it was due to mines and some said it’s the shallow water and then up came that the instant death screen did not work ….but I myself think is down to the amount of information being processed its just too much to be handled at one time.:hmm:

Tis odd as when GWX 2.0 and 2.1 under construction I never had a CTD in that area at all
And I had to check out the shipping and ports in the area
Most odd

Maybe the amount of mines in that area as well as traffic can cause problems

This time I stayed out of the Dunkirk's rendering range and didn't have any problems.

Except for being sunk.

There's something seriously wrong with my game. I reloaded saved game before Dunkirk and went there again. I've done my job at Dunkirk and procedeed with patrol around UK.

I played for several hours, regulary saving the game. Each time I was careful not to save near land or ships.

When I try to load the game this morning, every single saved game resulted with the CTD (7 different games). Since I started this patrol 3 days ago, I had exactly 19 CTDs.

I love this game, but this is getting too much to handle

Best stay well clear of the area....there is obviously something seriously wrong.

I think I'll follow your advice. :D Dunkirk won't see me again.

49000t down the drain. At least I experienced some of the best moments since I play this game...

As I posted in another thread, I was able to overcome the CTDs in a saved game by removing two mods. One being the Enhanced Damage effects mod. Click on the CTD details and see if a mod is causing the crash. If so start removing mods until you can get the saved game to work. Maynot work for you but it did for me.

Thanks John O, I'' give it a try. If I understood you correctly, you're saying to disable the mods not while in port, but during the patrol? :hmm: Isn't it a bit risky? But since the saved is already broken, I guess I can't make it any worse.

But I can't do it now, since I reloaded previously saved game and went on with my career, far away from Dunkirk. The evacuation ended anyway. Pitty, because I had a lot of fun there.

I learned two things from my experience:
- you're OK if you stay away from Dunkirk's rendering radius (~32km). If you enter it - CTD
- even if you don't experience CTD, every saved game after Dunkirk will be corrupted, no matter how, where or when you saved it.

I hope this is the case with my game only, and not the global issue...

Well you certainly won't fix it that way because the game engine will look for the files already altered by said mods and crash automatically.

Only music and a few graphics files are able to be treated this way whilst in mid patrol.

BEST PRACTICE.....never add or delete mods whilst not in port http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

My thoughts exactly. The only files I ever changed mid patrol were gramophone music and sub emblem. :D

I realize this is a very old post that I'm replying to...and I apologize. But, it is exactly the issue I'm having at Dunkirk, currently. It is the most "on topic" post I can find regarding this problem...and I am wondering if anyone has found the problem? Now that I have approached Dunkirk...and found nothing worthwhile...I can't leave without the infamous "SH3 has encountered an error..." Blah, blah, blah.

Any new information?

Wow...not only has "visiting" Dunkirk produced an error on this patrol...it seems to have destroyed this career?? :damn:

I now get an error when trying to start the patrol "in base, before mission"...before I ever went to Dunkirk...
ModName: kernel.dll

This is why I have an XBox 360 and why I hardly ever bother with PC games anymore. MS flightsim is gone...and I thought I would give SH3 another try. It's the definition of "insanity"...doing something over and over again...and expecting a different result. :har:

Don't know what to tell you. I reinstall SH3 on a regular basis. But then I know I'm insane, and don't worry about it.

I've had a couple dozen CTDs when loading a saved game. (Prior to removing the Read Only flags. None since, and I've saved in some stupid places.)

The Dunkirk Evac is the only time I've ever had SH3 crash during play.
Once I got into rendering range, the framerate dropped to single digits, then crashed.

None of the saved games worked until I went all the way back to In Base, Before mission, and even that was quirky. I am pretty sure the quirks were due to not rolling back SH3 after the crash though.

Perhaps a test career is in order now that I've removed the Read Only flags. I would expect the game to crash, but maybe the saved games will be ok.

Worth a try.

A kernel.dll error is usually associated with memory shortage and the Dunkirk evacuation uses a lot of resources do to the heavy traffic scripted into the area rendering takes place.

I seldom had a problem with my single core system (2GB RAM) and have had no issues at all since upgrading to a quad core with 8GB RAM

I fully appreciate we all have different budgets and accompanying constraints on what we purchase and see as lifes priorities therefore all I can suggest is....if machine specs are low, either upgrade or stay clear of the area.

Just seen this post :damn:

I remember having this problem quite some time ago. I never did find out what caused it, or solve it. However regarding rig specs, it was while I was running a Intel core 2 quad with 4 gb ram. OS was vista 64 bit, but I must admit it was before I stumbled across the 4 gb patch. Maybe I should try running dunkirk one more time now I'm using the patch :hmmm:

Best regards.

Any chance you could link to the 4GB patch? Since I have 8GB, I want SH3 to be able to use as much of it as possible :O:

My problem seems to be the Dunkirk area itself...regardless of ship traffic. I've been there when it is relatively deserted (2 AI ships) and still had the crash. As long as I stay outside of rendering range (32 km ???) for Dunkirk itself, I have no problems.

Sounds like a corrupt file for an item/ship/whatever that is around Dunkirk, so whenever you go near it, the game crashes.

Take the scripted traffic out with ME and run a separate install and you will quickly find out what the offending unit is if that is the case.

I don't know what "ME" is...and I think I'll follow your earlier advice..."...stay clear of the area". :salute:

Better to save the game only during intervals between action situations.... like convoys etc...
My solution is to plot the convoy's course, leave the proximities and then save.
