Well, it's finally happened - my formerly top-of-the-line system is pretty much obsolete. It was custom-made a couple of years ago, when AMD processors were the preferred choice for gaming rigs. It has an AMD 64 4200 socket 939 processor, formerly overclocked to about 2.5 GhZ and now running back at standard settings. Memory is 2 GB of DDR. It came with a 7900GT, now upgraded to an 8800GTS 640MB. At the moment I am satisfied with the video card - I suspect that the aging CPU and DDR memory are the main bottlenecks.
I realize that I will need to ditch the MoBo to take advantage of the latest processors. Any suggestions on a reasonably-priced midrange Intel CPU and motherboard? Also, any recommendations on the best type of memory to go with it? Thanks!
