AFAIK the rounded, slightly elevated bow, and above all, the gun on the fore conning tower are classic giveaways of british submarines. May be it's the one the germans captured and put in service as a german one later?

I'm not realy sure, and can only guess. The boats on picture were assigned to 2nd Flotilla, and the photo is taken before the war (judging by the painted numbers).
The base of the 2nd Flotilla before the war was Wilhelmshaven, except for the first few weeks after forming, when it was in Kiel.
So, I guess the photo is probably taken in Wilhelmshaven, with a small probability that it was in Kiel. :D
Thanks for all the great pics! The ones of the type XXI in Bremerhaven are something else:up: It looks like it was from the late '50s to early '60s not WWII!:p

Great thread. Sorry to hijack a little bit.
I was wondering if someone could help me out? I am about to start work on two of Revell's 1/144 U-boats: VIIC and VIID. I have in mind to build U-201 and U-214 but I lack reference pictures. Here are the pics I have so far.

I am in particular interested if the boats had wire-net cutters while using these camouflages (Revell refers to it as early/late version):

Interesting pic of U-1008, but for some reason though it doesn't jive with the info at uboat.net about U-1008.
http://www.uboat.net/boats/u1008.htm
Uboat.net states the boat did not have any patrols, was attacked and damage by a liberator and scuttled by its crew the next day.
It's interesting how the picture shows it returning to port with victory flags on the periscope. :hmm:
Plus the picture shows the Bull of Scapa Flow emblem, which if I remember correctly, was the 7th Flotilla emblem and uboat.net shows U-1008 belonging to the 5th Flotilla.
Of course the question remains, why the 1008 on the conning tower?
Maybe uboat.net has some wrong information.
Just curious.
:)
Cool pictures nonetheless.
:)
@Conus000: You'll probably find better answers if you ask it in the modelling forum here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=186
AFAIK, the net-cutter was removed from 1941 onwards in all U-Boats

The conning tower seems to be that of a VIIB so the number is most likely for something else :hmm:
It's probably U-46: http://www.uboat.net/boats/u46.htm
I agree with you. The pictured boat is indeed VIIB. There were only 24 commissioned U-boats of that type. To my best knowledge only 3 of them ever sported the "snorting bull" insignia: U-46, U-47 and U-75.
If you take a look on the picture the damage seems to be caused by physical contact (ramming) rather than depth charge explosion. According to www.uboat.net (http://www.uboat.net) the facts about U-46 say "8 Jun, 1941 The torpedoed British tanker Ensis rammed its attacker, the U-46, and damaged its tower and periscope. The damages forced the boat to abort the patrol."
I believe that the picture was taken after the patrol in the port. What the number 1008 on the tower means still eludes me though. Unless there are more digits in front of 1008 not visible due the tower curvature. In that case it could mean the total tonnage up to date.

Wow! In "Ubootwaffe, Marine-Kleinkampfverbände 1939-1945" by Waldemar Trojca on page 38 is the exact picture with this the description I wrote in my previous post (U-201). Go figure. :hmm:
If you are right and it is actually U-596 then this is SECOND factual mistake I found in U-boat publications this week.
Too bad the picture is too grainy to identify the crest on the conning tower but I am still convinced that the picture in question is indeed U-201 and here is why:
U-201 carried the coat of arms of city of Remscheid.
This one:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/Stadtwappen_der_kreisfreien_Stadt_Remscheid.png
U-596 in her whole career carried these three crests:
http://www.uboataces.com/emblems/596.jpg
So if you take a good close look at the picture you can see that the crest on the conning tower is split in two halves (darker at the bottom and lighter on the top). I am leaning towards coat of arms of Remscheid.
Just out of curiosity, would you mind to share your source of the picture?

I never thought it would be such a success this thread:lol:
when I decided to start it . I hoped for 2-3 pictures .
I have never seen so awsome , interesting , nice pictures
of german submarines ever:) Maybe it will show some pictures
our modders can use in the future , and made wondeful mods ,
and keep the SH3 alive , for years to come:yep:
This pictures that you all have been so kind to share with us ,
shows that this forum has more nice pictures than the famous "uboat.net ":smug:
I hope that someone in the future will "click" themselfes in SUBSIM , instead of
"uboat.net" to get references regarding SH3 , models , or even posters:p
I know some of the pictures is taken from "uboat.net , but not all . Some have a familyalbum they will share , and somone know somebody who served in these interesting boats
It is with great pride to say , I am very proud to be a member or whatever in this forum:yep:
Someone says there are few left in SUBSIM of the old ones , but hey ,
the new ones gonna take over , and lead the heritage further .
SO THANK YOU ALL FOR SHARING THESE WONDERFUL PICTURES !
I SALUTE YOU ALL !
So come on people , show us some more pictures:)

...yet the emblem of the U-201 disagree's with the picture...
Not really. The crests and their positioning changed over the course of the war:
Originally the U-201 carried two small crests of Remscheid on the both sides of the conning tower, around May 1942 the crest was enlarged and moved to the center of the tower. Sometime during 1942 two snowmen were added to the each side of the crest (as a practical joke, the captain's name was Adalbert Schnee, 'schnee'='snow' in German). It was the early version of the insignia where snowmen had "melting" bases and were holding brooms. Again sometimes during 1942 but definitely before August 8th they were changed to snowmen on your picture (no brooms and decorated with Knight's Cross).

Warning: There are images in this massive archive that are VERY graphic in nature.
Awesome find. I just scanned through a few and some of the photos are incredible.
And yes, I did find some graphic ones that were not pretty.
Why should they? Since the detonators and the torps were transfered seperately...
But that bum could stop playing billiard and take his hands out of his pockets. Looks like a few more hands would improve matters.

U 19, U 20 and U 23 Found in Black Sea off the Turkish Coast
Feb 2008
The final resting place of three German U-boats, nicknamed "Hitler's lost fleet", has been found at the bottom of the Black Sea.
The submarines had been carried 2,000 miles overland from Germany to attack Russian shipping during the Second World War, but were scuttled as the war neared its end. Now, more than 60 years on, explorers have located the flotilla of three submarines off the coast of Turkey.
The vessels, including one once commanded by Germany's most successful U-boat ace, formed part of the 30th Flotilla of six submarines, taken by road and river across Nazi-occupied Europe, from Germany's Baltic port at Kiel to Constanta, the Romanian Black Sea port.
In two years, the fleet sank dozens of ships and lost three of their number to enemy action. But in August 1944, Romania switched sides and declared war on Germany, leaving the three remaining vessels stranded.
With no base and unable to sail home - the Bosporus and Dardanelles were closed to them because of Turkish neutrality - their captains were ordered to scuttle the boats before rowing ashore and trying to make their way back to Germany. However, all three crews were caught and interned by the Turks.
Now the submarines' hulls have been discovered by a team led by Selçuk Kolay, a Turkish marine engineer, who will present his findings to a shipwreck conference in Plymouth this week.
Mr Kolay established the boats' positions through research in German archives, interviews with surviving sailors and by sonar studies of the seabed.
He has already completed successful dives to the wreckage of one vessel, U-20, two miles offshore in about 80ft of water. He believes he has discovered another, U-23, at twice that depth, three miles from the town of Agva, but bad weather forced him to suspend diving until the spring.
He thinks he is also close to pinpointing the third boat, U-19, thought to lie more than 1,000ft down, three miles from the Turkish city of Zonguldak.
It's one of the least well known stories of the war but one of the most interesting," said Mr Kolay.
"It is a quite incredible story. To get to the Black Sea these boats had to be taken across the land, and once they got there they had no way out."
All three U-boats had been operating against British shipping in the North Sea. U-23 gained notoriety for scoring one of Germany's earliest successes, sinking a British ship off the Shetland Islands days after war began. It was later commanded by Otto Kretschmer, known as "Silent Otto", the most successful U-boat ace.
In 1941, Germany invaded Russia and decided it needed a presence in the Black Sea to harass Soviet shipping there. Unable to use the Bosporus, the only shipping route into the Black Sea, the boats were dismantled at Kiel and taken by canal to the River Elbe, and upstream to Dresden.
Here, they were partly dismantled and taken by lorry to Ingolstadt, on the Danube, and then ferried downstream to the Black Sea and Constanta, where they were re-assembled.
When Romania switched sides the crews were ordered to scuttle out of sight of the Turks so the submarines' locations would remain a mystery. Mr Kolay was helped by a map drawn by Rudolf Arendt, 85, the former captain of the U-23, showing where his crew came ashore.
Mike Williams, secretary of the Nautical Archaeology Society, said: "This is a significant find because these U-boats were all scuttled, so they should be intact, like a sealed tube. They are unique survivors of the war."
Six submarines were taken almost 2,000 miles across Nazi-occupied Europe, by road and river, from Germany’s Baltic port at Kiel to Constanta, on Romania’s Black Sea coast
(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2008/02/03/uboat/river.jpg)The epic odyssey, which lasted several months, saw them taken from their base at Kiel, by canal to the river Elbe, and upstream to Dresden
From here, they were partly dismantled and loaded onto lorries for a cross country trip to Ingolstadt, on the Danube, and then downstream to the Black Sea, where they were rebuilt
(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2008/02/03/uboat/land.jpg)In a two year campaign, the fleet attacked more than 50 enemy vessels, sinking 46,500 tonnes of shipping
Otto Kretschmer, known as “Silent Otto”, commanded U-23, and became the most successful U-boat ace of the war
(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2008/02/03/uboat/kretschmer.jpg)But, in August 1944, the remaining three vessels suddenly found themselves stranded in the Black Sea after Romania switched sides and declared war on Germany
Without a base to return to and unable to sail home, their captains were ordered to sink their U-boats at secret locations along the Turkish coast
(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2008/02/03/uboat/doenitz.jpg)Now, more than 60 years on, explorers have located the final resting place of a flotilla of three submarines, dubbed “Hitler’s lost fleet”

(http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/graphics/2008/02/03/uboat/seabed2.jpg)Mr Kolay was also helped by a map drawn by Rudolf Arendt, who, in 1944 was the 21-year-old captain of U-23
He has already completed successful dives onto the wreckage of one of the vessels, U-20, and believes he has discovered the position of another, U-23
