Well, I've been away for a really long while... and after hearing about some bad bugs with Silent Hunter 4 , I decided not to go for it.
However, now that some patches have finally come out, I'd like to know if I should get Silent Hunter 4 or stick to playing Silent hunter 3 (with the GWX addon of course).
Play both
SH4 with the 1.5 patch and Lurkers Operation Monsoon mod is a good play
I split time between both games

The GWX team have announced that they are now working on GWX 4 for SH4.
They haven't given a release date yet and have stated that they will be running silent and deep until the mod is ready for release.
I'm a SH3 man but have just got hold of SH4 so that I can get used to the stock game (and the great mods that are already out there) in preparation for GWX 4.

Alright, thanks for the inputs.
Just two questions :
1)What's the Lurkers Operation Monsoon mod about?
2)Is the SH4 expansion worth it? Buying it in order to get a patch seems to be another clever market ploy...

SH4 has been a great game since the release of patch 1.3 over a year ago. Everything else has been gravy. Those who demand perfection are destined to have nothing.
It is always amazing to me that SH3 players take the time to lecture us about how full of bugs SH4 is and how it isn't worthwhile if its bugs aren't fixed. Meanwhile their game of choice can suddenly totally forget your whole career if you save within detection distance of any ship, plane or offshore bird, within a nebulous distance from shore, if you are submerged (or is it on the surface?), or if you aren't facing Mecca.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Don't forget that it can also forget your whole career if it just doesn't like you or (my personal favourite) just because...:rotfl:

You might want to put a "some" in there. The only thing that keeps me from playing SH4 is the state of my computer. I'll still talk up SH3 just because of things like Commander, but I've said all along that SH4 is the wave of the future. I agree that some of us (them?) are rather narrow-minded about the games we play.
I see no reason to issue challenges and start fights.

Sorry, Tachyon
1. I don't know what Lurkers Op Monsoon is about but the thread is here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134922&highlight=monsoon
2. SH4 U-Boat Missions Add On has its own forum here on subsim: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/forumdisplay.php?f=232 The GWX team have also said that GWX 4 will be based on the add on so players will need it if they eventually want to play GWX 4.

I stand corrected. I should indeed have said "some." I also enjoy SH3 in several different mod configurations. It is frustrating that it eats careers for breakfast, but I just confine my forays to single missions and make the best of it. It still remains a great, fun game.
But SH3 has two errors much more severe than anything SH4 has to offer. The first is the career gobbler and the second is not modeling the wolfpack behavior which was at the center of U-Boat life and death. Modeling U-Boats without wolfpacks is like modeling American submarines without water.

:rotfl:
That's the best simile I've heard in a long time.
I just keep hoping something willl come along for 4 that compares to SH3 Commander. I'll play 4 as soon as my computer will run it, but I'll probably stick with 3 for u-boats until I have something cool like that.
But I agree with most of the answers to the OP - for now, play both, but SH4 is the new, improved version. SH5 anyone?

I don't know. Who are you?:rotfl:
@ Tachyon: In answer to your second question, the add-on includes the 1.5 patch which makes the game better even if you don't play u-boats. All the newest mods are designed with it in mind, so it's pretty much vital to play with the lates goodies.

I sure hope these guys know what they're doing if SH5 is to see the light of day any time soon. A lot of bad things can happen for there be dragons.
