My Grandfather sailed from Liverpool on Convoys......admittedly he was on an Escort Carrier and was eventually sent ashore due to injuries sustained in the combat arena....He was hiding under a table when a NAFFI Tea Ern fell on his back.

In reality it was my uncle who was given the medals for his participation in the War in the Med as an aircraft engineer on an escort carrier.



Which is why......at my age.....I watch my torps strike home and I think of those who lost their lives as the merchant bites the dust!

Its a strange feeling coz I will quite happily fly an ME 109 in Air combat Sim inthe knoweldge that its me or them,,,,,where as in SH3...once that ship is locked on.....they dont stand a chance.


As much as I enjoy this game....and it is only a game.........I still....even now.....say a silent prayer for those of my kin whom I never knew

You're not the first one to rise such questions.

Sure this might looks like you are mocking the memories and sacrifices of those sea-faring warriors to the outsider.
But we here at subsim are Submariners at heart and are more aware of the history and the men behind it, than anyone else.

There were a lot of threads on this matter. Some good ones and some bad ones where Neal had to step in.

We do play the sim, but we do so with reverence to the history behind the subs. Most of the people are real buffs on this field.

I agree with Myxale entirely, even if I do only know slightly more than next to nothing about the U-boat conflict. If you are interested in finding out more, you can do a lot worse than read the 2 books written by Clay Blair called 'Hitler's U-boat War'. There are 2 books, the first being called 'The Hunters' and the second 'The Hunted.'

FYI if you are at all squeamish about leaving sailors stranded, you may want to use the Lifeboats and Rowers mods with caution, as they put the wind up me even now.:huh:

Watched the HMS Beltham capsize and explode in film on YouTube some 800 brittish sailors lost their life during that filmtake......
Probably 4x that figure were left behind, sisters, parents, girlfriends, kids dealing with the grief.....
With that said since I have a keen interest in history especially WWII, wich is one of the reasons I play this game, I know that I am more aware about these things then most people.
I am Swedish and we did not participate in the war therfore we havent had granparents with whitness stories like yours to tell. So if as a Swede you are not interested it wount come naturally to you.
Recently they found blueprints in Eastgerman archives of two concentrationcamps that were to be built in Sweden, one outside my hometown Malmö the other outside Stockholm. They were never built obviously. Thats the debt I have and my children have to your granfather and all the others who gave their life in the war.
Now I will make sure my kids are aware of this as I am, as you are, that is basicly all I can do to repay my share of the debt, and hopefully my kids will do the same.

Thanks for the link....and im not in any way squeemish.....it was just a thought....and in some respects...ive not really looked upon the Atlantic War from the German side.... I always ....being an englishman..saw a vicious, calous dirty war. ..and in some way this game has made me open my eyes, not only to those young men and women cast adrift, clinging to life floats but also to the men living day to day in Iron Coffins fighting for what they believed to be right.

Any game based upon actual wars can raise the same questions. Whether it is WWII, the U.S. Civil War, WWI, Medieval Europe, or Feudal Japan.

What I take away from this game when a patrol is finished isn't so much pondering all the lives lost in the actual conflict as the visceral excitement of being both hunter and hunted.

I applaud your conscience and sensibility to remember and honor those who served in a time of madness. Just try to remember those aren't real torpedoes. :up:

It's a bit more difficult for some people.
Many had Grandparents fighting in WWII, and unlike a Feudal Japan things are more recent...and closer to home, so to speak!

I understand that some people see this as only a game, and it is, but for a handful it's also like they are playing with others people history!

It's simply the way they feel. Them being sensible, thats all!

Lest We Forget

I, like a few others in Subsim, have been to war in RL. We lost a number of comrades. In real life one becomess enured to the loss of friends. We had a drink to their memory and kept on flying. The worst was visiting a friend's family (in Laos, we had accompanying families ).

Just like in real life, when returning to port I have a drink, remember those who died and get ready to go out again.

The subsim community teaches us respect for the real thing.
