I've been playing SH4 on and off since it came out and I have never played it for long so I have not gotten to know the game well enough. But this time is different.
What I'm curious about is regarding the SD antenna. I understand it can be raised and lowered, but is there any need to do so? or is it just eye candy for the game? If it is useful to raise it what are the benefits of doing so?
If you are using TMO press T to raise/lower it. In RFB there is an icon on the task bar. The purpose is so you can raise it at periscope depth and still monitor air contacts. Very useful.
I don't believe it is in the stock game--not sure about that.
No it's not in stock but Anvarts mod works great if you are modding stock. If you can do hex you can even edit the 1.5 or use the S3d if you don't like 1.4's. The online Fleet Submarine manual that is referred to by numerous people here describe it's use:
http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/chap20.htm
Ten minutes prior to surfacing, the commanding officer comes to the conning tower and relieves the watch. The junior officer of the deck of the previous watch relieves the diving officer a half hour prior to surfacing. Normally, just prior to surfacing, the ship is brought to 50 feet for SD sweep, then to 40 feet for SJ sweep (sound sweeping all the time).
If "All clear on radar" is indicated, pass. the work over the loudspeaker, " Stand by to surface ......... engine combination." The commanding officer will then direct the surface alarm be sounded.
BTW - What happened to your sig picture... I liked it and thought it looked professionally done 'Goose green'.

Edit - oh there it is - must have been my browser... lol
Is there a stand alone version of the raiseable SD radar because I don't want the whole mod of RFB or TMO just the SD radar.

So, I take it it's all eye candy then? It has no operational use with regards to it being an extra tool as a warning device.
Yes it is functional. Here it is:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=127815 and read the thread. The 1.4 version works with 1.5 too if you don't want to hex edit your 1.5. Use Notepad to edit your own menu.txt and commands.cfg files:
In Commands.cfg find [Cmd158]:
and edit it to look like this so Shift + X raises and lowers the SD:
[Cmd158]
Name=Toggle_snorkel
Ctxt=1
;Key0=0x59,,"Z"
Key0=0x58,sC,"Shift X"
Find the lines 4415 & 4416, and edit your Menu.txt to look like:
4415=Raising SD antenna!;Rising snorkel!
4416=Lowering SD antenna!;Lowering snorkel!
Use Anvarts Sensors_Sub_US.sim. Back up your files someplace safe. Might as well edit the "fire torpedo while accidentally bumping the Enter key" while you're at it.
In commands.cfg change these:
[Cmd6]
Name=Time_compr_normal
Ctxt=1,2,6,9
Key0=0x0D,,"Enter"
[Cmd313]
Name=Fire_torpedo
Ctxt=1
Key0=0x0D,c,"Ctl+Enter"
I prefer doing my own thing rather than the big super mods too. There are a lot of really cool small mods available.
Happy Hunting!

Edit - (I almost forgot) - in commands.cfg edit [Cmd195]
[Cmd195]
Name=Snorkel_depth
Ctxt=1
Str=1033
Key0=0xBA,C,"Comma"
and in menu.txt change 1033:
1033=Radar depth;Snorkel depth

No it's not eye candy. It's raised when your still submerged to sweep for air contacts before committing to surface trim. Nothing worse than surfacing under a patrol where they have the drop on you, pun intended. As stated in the book passage, raise the SD and sweep for air contacts, come up to radar depth and sweep for SJ surface contacts, and then surface when clear. You may ask what's the point as air patrols can see you at P-depth? Most patrols only ran surfaced after dark and dusk and dawn were dangerous times to be surfaced. The above procedure would be used after dusk to maximize stealth and minimize risks.

It's good to see that I'm using the right tactics on patrol! LOL.
i.e.
Dive for all aircraft contacts, except as specifically directed by previous instructions of the commanding officer.
Turn away from all fishing vessels or small craft unless ordered by the commanding officer to attack.
In making periscope observations, first sweep the horizon and sky in low power for aircraft or close surface craft. Follow this, if all clear, by a slow deliberate search in high power, not exposing the periscope for more than 15 seconds. Develop the habit of obtaining a complete picture of the weather during your observation. Have the quartermaster note the keel depth during the observation and also tell you when 15 seconds of periscope exposure has occurred.
Good info, thanks.:up:
I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or what but when I click on one of the links to get the mod from file front it takes me to the homepage and not to the mod.
Skwasjer's excellent S3D program will edit 1.5 for those who don't have Anvarts mod file:

Depends where the link information is taken from. Or possibly the file does not exist. Are you going to filefront main page, or the persons main file page? If you are going to the filefront main page then either the link was not done properly or the file does not exist anymore. Another thing that happens, if the file was updated and the link was not, it now points to the old file which may be deleted.

I believe it was a direct link to the mod but it must have been taken off. However aanker is going to send me the file via email so I should be fine.

Thank you Sir! This is one of the best mods out there IMO.
