Since there is not a good manual for SH4 where do the accomplished gamers get the information and how do they figure out the answers the myriad of questions raised?

By asking questions here and more importantly, by using the search function, many answers to questions can be
found in older threads :yep:
Use the manual for a doorstop or something similar.

In a word...experience...
...there simply is no substitute for it...even if you had a "good/usefull" manual to fall back on....

If it's info on equipment data or its uses I use the real manual.

And Orion, that is why we know this is a good simulator, despite its defects. The manuals for the real equipment answer many questions we have on how to run the simulator.
In addition, most of my information cames from reading books by the real sub skippers and crewmembers, Eugene Fluckey, Admiral Lockwood, Edward Beach, Dick O'Kane, William R. McCants and lots of others. The way I play the game today is totally different from the way I started out, doing what seemed reasonable to me.
Finally, sometimes it's good just to poke the game engine with a stick and see what it does. Get outside that career where you're so afraid to screw up and start up a mission to try stupid stuff. Take those foolhardy long shots. Slug it out with that armed merchie and try to find the position where his gun is masked. Learn the real reason you pull the plug and don't shoot at airplanes. Dive below crush depth and get some idea what happens down there and when. The game will poke back and you'll learn.:yep:

Naah, there were plenty of patrols where the skippers got canned. You have to simulate a few of those right! Its not fun to come home with 100K plus tons every cruise now is it? Plus the sad reality of those boats that never returned!
Like RR stated or anyone else that is just gaga over this sim, reading a few books on the Silent Service and following some of the tactics adds layers of realism to the sim and some really hair raising patrols to boot.
Its all good, happy hunting!

As a matter of fact, if one will download and read the RFB manual that was created for this release, one will find a lovely "Research Resources" listing starting on page 60... It lists, books, CD-ROMs and a number of websites all concerning WWII submarine data.

Real Fleet Boat... it's a Supermod for SH4 v1.5 that focuses on realistic gameplay. The RFB Team created a manual for RFB v1.52 to help players who install it understand more about how the mod, and submarine in some cases, operate.
Here's the top post link for the RFB thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=125529
Even if you not playing the mod, the appendix I mentioned has a lot of great informational citations.
