View Full Version : Engine running mode and deckgun operation
Is there a way to change from diesel to electric runningmode while on the surface.
Lets say my diesel is damaged or I wish to extend my range can I switch to the electric engine manually some how?
Then I am having problem with the deckguncrew they, sometimes, wont open fire.
I give all the orders, I mark the target via UZO and Binoculars. Nothing, not a thing happens. It is not until I take control and fire the gun personally that the crew gets the idea.
Any thoughts out there?

Running with electric engines while surfaced is one of the Holy Grails - no one has yet come up with a solution. It seems that the trigger for switching from diesel to electric is the same one that triggers your crew leaving the deck.
I've had the same problem with the deck gun early in the war with a green crew. You can try cycling through F10 and F4 until they open fire or you can accept that you need to fire the first round manually. I think this is linked to crew efficiency - even with a deck gun qualified Watch Officer (and crew efficiency on the gun therefore at 100%) I have had to swap a seaman for a PO on the gun to get them to open fire.

You can set your snorkel depth to 7.90 meters (well as long as you haven't a snorkel installed). In calm waters you run at the diesels, decks awash, showing a very low profile. Ideal for staying undetected at close ranges.
In heavy seas you run on electrics, but the conning tower is still manned.
I rarely use it, but I think the batteries don't exhaust, because the recharging function seems to be active above 8 meters depth.
:)
Concerning the deckgun: are you sure the target isn't neutral? I never ran into your described situation. Does the crew start to fire after the first "manual" round, or after the first "manual" hit?
Or is your target maybe out of range? Check your settings.

If you want an easy way to sail with decks awash, check out my Decks Awash mod on the page below my signature,

In GWX, you do have to go to the gun and click the ammo to load the first round.
In commands_en.cfg, there are commands to enable and disable the AA guns and (I think) deck gun. Has anyone tried to use these to fix this problem?
If I'm not mistaken, in GWX once you clicked on the first deck gun round, you are okay for the rest of the patrol.

But I seem to remember that you were able to choose running mode in SH2 or am I wrong?
If I am not wrong why remove the function.
Does this mean that if youre diesels are down you are dead in the water?

Sorry, I've never played SH2 so can't comment.
In SH3, the only way to get back to base once your diesels are destroyed is to use the magic 'Esc' key and get a tow.

I thought you could choose silent running on the surface to force the use of electrics?
I'm not sure if it's the right place for this question.
Has anyone ever managed to overheat the diesel's?
In SHII, when using the diesel-engines too long, the LI chips in "Engines are overheating" and you're forced to slow down. In SHIII one could travel across the atlantic at flank speed...
cheers

Ive never encountered that problem, I however (if you are using limited fuel) doubt you have enough diesel to xross the pool at flank speed.
how would being able to run electrics on the surface extend your range.. when you are going to have to waste diesel to recharge them?
i think people forget that when you recharge battery.. half your engine power (and fuel usage) is devoted to the task. only 1 prop pushes your boat for the same fuel usage.

I agree. While recharing, you are running at a slower speed. If you want to save fuel, just use diesel on the surface with a slower speed. Using battery on the surface will probably be the same or worse (since some energy is lost when converting from diesel engine to battery).

This was correct IRL, but with SH3 you can increase your range by running on batteries until they're almost empty then surfacing to recharge.
You only lose a couple of knots while you're recharging and the fuel usage appears to be the same.
