Can't re-patch SHIII-1.4b

I decided to try the GWX expansion. So I removed all my mods and removed SHIII, then I re-loaded the game and tried to patch the thing.

Now I get "unknown file" errors every time I try to run the patch.

So I deleted the text files that were apparently in error and/or the help files it was looking for and then it decided the version of my SH3.exe file was wrong or some such nonsence.

Does anyone know how to patch this silly thing ?

Did you uninstall SH3 completely?
Did you remove all the folders?
Did you try restarting your computer before reinstalling?
Did you follow the GWX installing directions to the letter?

You MUST follow the GWX instructions to the letter. Anything else is risking CTDs.

Are you using Vista? If so then you should read this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=105144. Another thing about Vista; you should also install the game to another location other than the default Program Files folder.

Check your "My Documents" folder. If there are any SH III related folders there delete them. You can also check the Registry for SH III related entries using the Regedit tool but be very careful. Remove only the entries that you know are for SH III. It's a good idea to perform a disk check after uninstalling anything too.

When you install SH III & run it, do you see a version number at the bottom right of the Main Menu screen? If the game is pre-patched (most newer copies seem to be) you should see a 1.4 & you should not apply any further patches.

That's about all that I can think of at the moment. Hope it helps.

I am running WinXP Pro not Vista.I followed the directions to the letter, removed every item of SHIII that I could find prior to running a fresh install. Then I tried to patch it and got all the errors.

Thanks for the thoughts, I am trying again at lunch today. Will let you know what happens. If i see the SH III 1.4 in the corner I will assume it is patched and then try loading GWX and report back.

If all else fails....ensure you use the uninstall option after inserting the game disc and manually delete the SH3 folder from C\MyDocs.

Okay, I reconfirmed that everything was gone and I checked the registry and removed an odd file there as well, so it is a complete clean slate. I re-loaded the game and "low and behold" it says SHIII 1.4, so I did not try to patch it.

I started the GWX2.0 install and then the GWX2.1 ... OMG !!! The install is great ... I am awaiting the end of the work day so I can pull that old boat of mine out of the docks and take to the open sea in search of prey !!! I don't think I have been this excited since the night before I got married !

Thanks so much herr Kaitan zur See

Success and a couple questions !!

I removed everything one more time as I said I was going to do. Confirmed that the new game disk came pre-patched (might want to add that possibility in the GWX install notes), and installed the two GWX Expansions over the new clean install.

The game installed flawlessly, and I was hugely impressed ... but work being work, I did not have a chance to start the game itself and run a new career until today.

I made a new career and tried to launch my new uboat. It CTD on loading (did not get to the "A LONG TIME AGO" screen). So I scratched my head some. Went to the MOD loader and removed all the added mods, started the game one more time and WOW ... ZOMG !!!

I made another new career and plotted a course out of Willhelmshaven ... I intended to play and go sink some merchants ... two hours later, after waving to the cheering crowds, listening to the band play some, then casting off and following a minesweeper out of port, we passed a few neutral merchantmen inbound with cargo for the markets, past the Tirpitz (under construction .... no turrets yet installed), past a Type IIb coming back from patrol, and then past Amsterdam ... nearly two hours later ... I had yet to sink any tonnage. Oh my god ... I am in heavan. I might even get to attempting something other than sight seeing tonight !

So a couple questions. I removed all the "small" GWX mods (all of them) as well as any other mods from the installed mod column, then the expansion ran fine. Is that supposed to happen or should all the smaller sub-GWX mods be in the right hand "enabled" column ?

Is there any way to switch from binoculars to the UZO and retain the bearing you were looking at ? Is there anyone making a mod to do that ? I hate scanning with my mark one eyeballs, finding something, switching to my handy binocs, then swapping out to the UZO and having to turn 180 degrees around again because I am for some reason looking at the stern of the boat.

Are the crew members voices recorded by anyone here ? Would the voice of the crewman doing the "Rudder ZERO degrees" make a Rudder "A-mid-ships" recording that I can swap for the ZERO ? Or is that zero used for all the numbers and swapping it would screw with other numbers ? I hear that rudder zero and it just makes me cringe. Must be my back ground.

Anyways ... my deepest thanks for such a wonderful expansion !!!

Think I am going to go take another three hour cruise ... might even get around to sinking some merchants this time !

Pleased your sorted....enjoy the GWXperience http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

One step at a time.....the CTD:

Do you only have the mods that came with the mod.

If so, enable one at a time and boot up the game on each new addition till you find out which one is problematic.

You may yet have a corrupt installation.

I had a couple extra mods that I enjoyed prior to loading GWX ... mostly added ships and a sound package. I removed all of the extras forst, tried it and still no load. Then I removed all of the enabled GWX mods, though the GWX loading screens still work and it is definately a different game even with them dis-abled ... so I know GWX is running in some form or another.

I will try re-adding the GWX mods one by one and report back. I am in PST (GMT -7), so in roughly 5 hours (at lunch time) I will see what happens.

Thanks for now !

Just in relation to the patch issue you had, for the older versions of SH3 without the incorporated 1.4b patch, and those of you who find an old version of the game in your cupboard, the patch in fact comes in four different flavors depending both on your global geographical location and also the means in which you purchased the game; (the only reason I bring this to your attention is because I was tool enough to have downloaded the incorrect patch recently and got errors galore until I downloaded the alternative European patch, hey a 50/50 call I know but best avoid the frustration!!):damn:

The 4 patch Flavours are:
a) - EMEA DVD Patch 1.4b (European SH3 version bought on CD)
b) - EMEA DOWNLOAD PATCH 1.4b (European SH3 version bought and downloaded online)
c) - US DVD Patch 1.4b (US SH3 version bought on CD)
d) - US DOWNLOAD PATCH 1.4b (US SH3 version bought and downloaded online)

Also, on another yet similar note……..

Having also both recently reinstalled SH3 and downloaded GWX 2.1, I have found that some MODS do not work (albeit GWX 2.1 compatible). However I think that my issue is that 2.1 comes with the version JSGME 2.1.0. While my GWX install went fine, when loading additional MODS to the game I decided that I would be clever and click on the JSGME “Update” link on the application and low and behold it updated, I now have the two versions of JSGME running simultaneously
and some MODS do not seem to be working. I can not find either version of JSGME in Add remove Progs either to enable me both start again and work off one version of the JSGME tool. Any ideas welcome…….??

PS: The game runs fine and I have no errors or conflicts, just want some funky eye candy skins, of which there are so many……

Cheers Paddy

Rule no1 for GWX....."Always start with a fresh/new game installation patched to 1.4b" http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Be advised the 1.3 is actually the 1.4

LOL ... as per the strict, explicit instructions, I did start each attempt with a fresh and pristine load of SHIII ... I just never knew that the CD (dvd) I bought actually has the patch incoroporated into it. That was most of my original problem.

So over lunch, I added 6 of the GWX "mods" (?) "parts" (?) ... all of them seem to be running fine and I can play. When I egt to the one that is buggering everything up, I will report back.

As a follow up to my other questions, is there any help to be found on the binoc/UZO swap ... or the sound file for zero/a-midships ?

Thanks again.
