Hey everyone,

im jason and im new to naval warfare sims. i discovered this game 2 days ago and couldn't believe something like this genre slipped by me (no pun about subs intended ;)). ive been watching video tutorials and reading about tactics and the like and am really fascinated by it all. im somewhat knowledgeable with 18th century naval warfare, but that doesnt wholly apply. anyway, just saying hello. looking forward to learning more in the weeks to come. :up:

i do have one question at the moment.

i did the tutorial missions and messed around with some quick action, but when i jump into the american career from pearl harbor, why does my radar not work?

Welcome Jason,

You'll get a surface radar later on. You do have an air detection radar which is not represented as a specific "station" in the game.

ahhh, ok. thanks. i was wondering if i had a problem or if it was a bug that needed to be patched.

Well that maybe also an issue, the game tends to be "bug friendly" and "pc-configuration dependent" but I don't think that's your case.

Basic notes for newcomers:

1) Remember to patch to latest patch level.
2) Use Q to open torpedotubedoors - before you fire the torpedo. Otherwise it will greatly increase your chances of missing your target.

Other than that - don't trust the manual - it has lots of stuff left from SH3.

Ask in this forum instead!

Jason;
just to add to what Diopos said;

Your early career subs will not have surface detection radar although the station is graphically represented as a station inside your sub (but it doesn't work). An oversight by the devs.
You will get verbal radar contact warnings from your crew, that will be an air contact (SD radar) which does not have a station that you can go to, it's an automatic function. Do NOT ignore these warnings (particularly if you are using the TMO or RFB mods). Dive for protection.

Later as you progress you'll be able to acquire the SJ radar which will be your surface detection radar and the station will actually be active. Be advised that this switches off when you dive and does NOT automatically switch on when you surface (at least in the TMO mod). So remember to check that your surface radar is on after coming up from a dive (once you have acquired it as part of your kit).

Hope this helps, and welcome.:up:

It does come back on automatically with the 1.5/UBM patch installed though.

Jason,

First. Welcome aboard!:up:

Second. If you like Silent Hunter IV. Then you need to get Silent Hunter III. In my opinion is a somewhat better sim. Don't get me wrong I like Silent Hunter IV. I'm actually playing both at the same time. SH III on my XP. And SH IV (First patrol, first carreer patrol:know: ) on my Vista.

Enjoy.:arrgh!:

without them, i would not have enjoyed my first week with this game hardly at all. it has given me that "total immersion" effect. all i got to say is im hungry for more :D

its frustrating too. im on a "disrupt the merchants" patrol and i got the one merchant really quickly. and im now in wait in a good spot between two close islands and ive noticed activity in this area when i wasn't here, but now that im waiting there, not one has come this way ha ha.

You must have a rather dirty arse then, from what I remember, the manual wasnt all too thick :hmm:

Oh, and welcome aboard, Jason! Aye, we are a good bunch here. Just stay away from tomoose and his pooey bum.

LOL.
