Voyager and Enterprise are my favourite series, followed closely by the next generation.

While the original series is awesome and theres no denying it, the effects make me laugh. I know i know it was good for the time, but still...

I once worked with a guy who made himself up to look like a Klingon for movie premiers and parties. When I called him a Trekkie he replied "I'm a Trekker! There is a difference, you know.

And I came back with "Yeah, but only a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie would say something that lame."

I watch the original series when it first aired in 1966. Watched the follow-ons. Not so much a fan as I used to be.

Your first step to recovery is admitting your dependency on a pointed ear Vulcan and a bad acting captain of a Hollywood stage prop of a "Starship". Other than that, you will just fine.

I like ST, too. ST 2-4, 6, 8, 9 are very nice movies, especially no. 9 I like for it's many slow, calm scenes - it is the most underestimated of the six, 2-4 are a nice trilogy, and 6 and 8 are simply the best Star Trek has ever come to. The later seasons of TNG also had quite some attractiveness, as had DS9 once it got into full swing after the first one or two seasons, i felt really like coming home to family when watching DS9's latest episode, and again some great character inventions there. But then the ST-idea was over-spent with Voyager (not feeling Trekkish anymore), and Enterprise really was the funeral of it all - not any Trekkie-feeling at all.

Some episodes from TNG and DS9 that I liked, I have recorded and keep them since 15 years or so. The movies (as listed above) anyway. And Spock? Spock is cool! One of the most fascinating and original film characters ever invented in film business, even more so in his relation to Kirk. As Captains, i liked Picard and Sisko better - both are more believable, and serious. Both also were played by way better actors. As Kirk, Shatner was fine. But as an actor beyond that role, Shatner is awful. I also do not liked his behavior when appearing in private on TV, in shows or interviews.

Well, if it's confession time... I have the uniform! It's a Next Generation 2-piece, custom-made for me from the official pattern. And I think I still have a hand phaser around here somewhere... And oh yes, a meticulously painted model of the Enterprise-D!

And in the early '90s, I wrote & submitted a script to Paramount for an episode of ST:TNG, but that went nowhere. Back in those days, they agreed to read submissions from anyone, even without agents or WGA membership. As far as I know, that unusual policy did not lead to any actual episodes getting produced.

I was a fan of the original series when i was a kid. The cast began to do small appearances at places like high schools. That was before the conventions took off. I met Jimmy Doohan when I was ten years at Hogan High in Vallejo CA. My wonderful parents sold all my Star Trek memorabilia when I entered the service, I guess they figured it was time to grow up ITO. Wish I still had that stuff. I saw a couple of episodes of the latest series and the Vulcan chick is pretty hot, I am becoming a fan again.... for different reasons.:D

I was a fan of the first series as well. I went to the Smithsonian when they had the Enterprise bridge on display along with other items and clothing. It was laughable because it was all made of plywood and painted gray. William Shatners chair was plywood and plastic. They had the tribbles on display from the the trouble with tribbles episode. Of course all the starships were on display. I was also a fan of the Next Generation and I found all the major motion pictures enjoyable. I did not watch any after the Next Generation was over.

Actually I scratch built it. The pants were like 5 $ at a flea market. The Boots were my old border patrol issues with some modifications, maybe 15 $. The shirt was custom made and that was where the cost came in. I supplied the materials and had a Russian seamstress sew it together from the original TV series pattern. I think she charged my 60-70 $. The phaser is a cheesey playmates toy, I wasnt bringing my high dollar stuf to a convention. I spent months trying to get the right material and color for that dopey shirt they just dont exist anymore. The early seasons of Trek the shirts were velour (Stretch), later nylon.

Since I have some trekkies (or trekkers, if you prefer) gathered here, I wondered if I might venture a few questions. Yeah, I could probably find the answers myself, but I thought a few might enjoy educating me, instead. Besides, I'm lazy. :D

1) How is it that the crew isn't splattered across the walls every time the ship accelerates and decelerates?

2) From what little I have seen, the ships appear to shake violently when hit. That being the case, why don't they just use high-yield nuclear-tipped solid munitions fired from a railgun or something. The kinetic force from that would do a lot more damage than a phaser, wouldn't it?

3) How is it that they can travel faster than light, and teleport people and stuff, but still miss a ship that's a kilometer long with a weapon that appears to travel at least the speed of light? Was there a 500-year hiatus on targetting-computer technology?

4) On that note, why are the borg such bad shots?

5) I'm having difficulty with the idea of Hanomag as Captain Kirk. Bear in mind, I only watched a few episodes from each of the series, but none of them mentioned a "save" function. Did I just miss it?:D

I know it's just a show (I mean epic show, don't death-grip me) and I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I've known some trekkies who enjoyed answering questions of this nature.

Answer or ignore, I'm just an inquisitive idiot:D

*cracks fingers and gets typing*

1) Every starship has inertial dampeners (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Inertial_damper), which work to counteract the force of acceleration and deceleration.

2) To quote Andre Burmanis, the show's science consultant: "Well it is the same principle, ultimately. We do see on Star Trek, for example, the ship will get involved in a tussle with a alien and will be fired upon, and the ship shakes. Well, if we have inertial dampers how come the crew is feeling that shake? Presumably the inertial dampers have a certain response time. It’s not instantaneous, so there’s a little bit of a lag and it’s that lag that creates the shake that we momentarily experience when the ship is hit by phaser fire or a photon torpedo or something. " and as far as nuclear tipped missiles go, that'd hardly be as spacey-cool as a phaser. :p

3) Targetting computers or no, the ship still needs to be aligned with a phaser bank or torpedo tube in order to a) get a weapons lock and b) successfully hold the lock long enough for the torpedo or phaser to do maximum damage. Plus, you've got to take into consideration that if the ships could hit every single thing they targetted instantly, it wouldnt be much of a show :88)

4) Because the Borg suck.

5) I hear he wants me as Spock. :88)

Ohh man can you feel the nerdiness up in this thread :smug:
