I have been playing SHIII for about a year and a half and have a few tricks up my tunic. I just havn't been brave enough to go full manual yet. I know.... "HERITIC!!! BAN HIM!!"

I have heard of the '3:15 rule" for timing the speedo of ships. Just how does it work?

Everything you need to know about Manual Targeting and then some:

Basically the 3:15 rule means you mark the position of a contact/ship on the map then start the chronometer (From the attack scope/UZO screen). After 3 minutes and 15 seconds you mark it's new position. Use the ruler to measure how far apart the two marks are. That range divided by 100 = speed in knots. So if it moved 600m in 3 minutes 15 seconds it's speed is 6kts. If it moved 1.2km in 3:15 it's moving at 12kts.

Thanks, now I think I can attack ships further than 1500 meters.

To continue here is another SQOTD...

Have you ever seen a ship capsize? I have had one go down on its side @ 90 degrees; but never turn turtle. Is a thing like that even possible in the game engine? I know the Oklahoma in Peral Harbor capsized; but that was at dock and not moving.

Plenty of times. It really depends on the type of ship and its compartment layouts. The game's engine is indeed based around virtual compartments that get flooded. Generally, I find that ships hit with multiple torpedoes along one side (but not in the same spot) are fairly likely to capsize.
