Hey up folks,

Why isnt there a new member thread pinned so we can introduce ourselves?

If there is and ive missed it then 'PANTS'!!!!!

Any way, just wanted to say hi. Ive been playing SH3 since it first came out....actualy thats a lie, coz when it first came out my pc couldnt cope with it, so I had to wait till i eventually upgraded and got a pc that could cope with it...only took 12 months, so no harm done.

Not being a great one for searching t'internet I never knew anything about Modifications or patches or any of those strange concoctions, I always thought what you bought was what you got.....how wrong was I

So, one has done some reading and investigating and has downloaded pacthes and Mods and it turns out that my 3 yr old pc just isnt upto the speed required to be able to partake in anything except what I get on the stock disc.

I blame steve at work for informing me about mods for the game and getting me all excited about a potential new SH3 gaming experience, when in reality all I did was spend 15 hours in total downloading, deleting, loading and patching for absolutly no reason what so ever.

So its back to the stock version for me. I cant justify spending pennies on upgrades when SWMBO is in need of more shoes. tut

so come on admin.....pin a newbie thread...let us reveal all:cool:

Erm....its a lap top. its has a sticker on it saying parkard bell and it plays some music to me if i click on a certain clicky thing.

Its basically out of date from the day it was purchased, it wont even play medievil total war 2.

But it plays Romw Total war and SH3 so one is happy as long as I dont try and add Mods.

ps Specs? oh yes, i do use specticles when im on the laptop:lol:

Somebody recognized long ago that if every request for a sticky thread was honored, the first regular thread would be on page 3 of every forum.

many thanks for the replies. I guess it helps if I spend the time looking instead of jumping straight in, In my defense I was half way through a bottle of Bacardi.

Having done some more reading of threads, especially on load times for gwx, is it possible I wasnt waiting long enough for the game to load as quick as the stock version?

Graf Paper

That is likely what occurred. GWX takes much longer to load than stock SH3 because it has a far more detailed world and campaigns to load. A minimum spec machine can take as long as 20 minutes to load the game. Typical load times are usually between 3 and 10 minutes, though.

Welcome aboard, herr kaleun! :ahoy:

Nope.....after 30 mins I reduced the sh3 window and returnd to windows and found an error message waiting.....It looks like I need a new PC

Can anyone advise me of the spec needed in order to play SH3 with GWX also with a bit of Medievil total war 2 thrown in?

Can Laptops be upgraded?

It would appear on reloading sh3 its my CPU thats inadequate...can a laptop have its cpu upgraded or is it more cost effective to buy new?

On a more positive note, I have eventually managed to reload and download the windows XP patch for Fighting Steel.....its naval war son but not as we know it

Welcome aboard Saltysplash. :arrgh!:

I have never heard of "Fighting Steel", until now. I just looked it up and saw some screen shots. It has '99 release dates. It just about takes me back to an almost similar look of the old "Silent Service" that got me started in Sub sims. :yep:

I must admit that when I have considered any sort of upgrade, Silent Hunter takes on a priority concern for me make changes to my system.

Unfortunately, laptops aren't really built for upgrading. Aside from adding things like a larger internal hard drive or more RAM, a few gaming models may allow you to upgrade the video card but that's about it. The cost of laptop parts is also exorbitant, when compared to desktop PCs.

You'll either need to purchase a new laptop or get a desktop system. I'd recommend a desktop because you can get an amazing amount of "horsepower" for half the cost of a laptop.

Also, it used to be that many games just wouldn't run that well on laptops (according to my understanding) because the hardware is highly specialized and does not operate in the same standard as the desktop systems for which games are primarily developed.

That problem has begun to be less of a worry with newer laptops now that vendors know many people like to use them for LAN parties and gaming on the go these days.

There is a Laptop that is Upgradeable.

look here, its not cheap however.I was lucky to get an Alienware Area 51 laptop and it barely raises a sweat running SH3 GWX 2.1 or Med Total War 2.

Seek and ye shall find.....its a bloody miracle!

I was all ready to go out next week and buy a new PC and was busy pricing up exactly what i thought i'd need.

Then, while using up downtime at work Ive read this forum upto about page 16 and finally discovered the reason why GMX wouldnt work.

My DVD stock game is rather old and not patched to v1.4.
My attempts to patch the game failed miserably until today....when I eventually read instructions to 'not only delete the current version but also the bits left behind......within mins the clean version was loaded and patch accepted....then came the nervy part of installing GWX.

:D It works....it bloody works:cool:

Just completed my first mission which i used as a test drive sinking 3 merchants before returning to wilhelmshaven.

Many thanks to all those gone before me for posting questions and big thanks to those who replied and mega thanks to the mods.

even my gramaphone works now:sunny:

It would be better to use the .ogg format. The .mp3 works, but the songs sometimes end prematurely.

ALWAYS CONVERT TO OGG.VORBIS FORMAT

Step 1) Open Mobile Music Converter.

Step 2) Click on '+' sign on the left of the screen. This will let you find the files on your computer. You click on the file(s) you want to convert and you will now see it in the large box next to the '+' symbol from earlier. You can select multiple files in one go for conversion.

Step 3) By the output file/folder box click on '...' and choose where you want the converted file to be saved. I always use the desktop.

Step 4) Click on the 'Conversion to' drop-down menu and select your chosen file type, in this case Ogg Vorbis audio. Then click on the Quality drop-down menu and select 'High'.

Step 5) Click on Convert Now! Your converted .Ogg file will now appear on your desktop, ready for you to move to the SH3 gramaphone file.

Good luck and may your gramaphone ROCK!
