So today, I got my current career's closest call

I shat enought bricks to build a house

So now it leaves me wondering...

What would have happened if I had touched the mine's chain?
Would the mine just have exploded or would my sub go throught the chain like nothing?

Well, the worst that could happen is you break the mooring chain and the mine sinks down and hits you. :p

You have to REALLY CAREFUL around the eastern coastline of England. The waters there, extending a few dozen kilometers out from shore, are so thick with mines you could practically walk on them from the Firth of Clyde all the way down to Southend without getting your feet wet! :o

Ok...maybe I'm exaggerating a little but there is indeed a "wall" of mines along the entire eastern coast of England, known as the Eastern Mine Barrage.

And don't forget the Northern Mine Barrage off the coast of Iceland.

...or the minefields in the Bay of Biscay.

... and the hundreds of mines seeded around Helgoland, starting in 1940.

Yep. GWX has made sailing the oceans as full of fun and adventure as having a blindfolded dentist giving you a root-canal!

From now on, you'd better start packing extra changes of underwear before you set sail. :p

Well, I wouldn't call that a "wall" of mines, they are quite spread out, and none of them wasn't directly on my route when I was doing the 100km underwater trip.

And what do you mean they'd sink down? Aren't the chains for preventing the mine from surfacing?

Theoretically your boat would snag the chain on a mine and pull it down and contact would trigger the detonator. Today, the magnetic signature of the vessel would trigger the mine. Every part of the globe alters the signature of a boat's hull so a friendly today can pass a mine without detonation and un friendly' s signature would detonate the mine so we alter the signatures of the subs to operate in unfrendly waters. There were mines back then that were magnetic and any vessel in close proximity would detonate including friendlies. Mine sweepers had wood hulls as did many escorts who help pilot ships in mined areas. So you may have been the approripriate distance away from detonation for a era magnetic or contact mine.

Oh, ok. Thanks for the info mate

Next time when I find a mine, I'll go and touch the chain, and see what actually happens. Pictures will be posted

I have been chugging up and down the East Coast raiding Brit ports and yet to come across a single mine or minefield.

Kipparikalle, you were on the northern end of the barrage. The mines are spread thinner there.

Give it time. You roll the dice long enough and you'll come up snake-eyes every time.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that these mines are set at different depths so diving deep will only work just so much. Since the barrages are meant to stop a submerged u-boat, you can try to sail on the surface to avoid most of the mines but that's not a foolproof solution because you will encounter mines that are set shallow.

There is a clear lane to allow convoys and other shipping traffic to move freely up and down the coast.

Just because you haven't hit one yet doesn't mean the mines aren't there. :p

This is war, after all, with a hundred ways to die before you've even had your morning coffee ration.

Coastal mucking about is definetely not my style. Haven't seen mines, don't wanna see mines. I let the kaboomers write their tales from Valhalla.
