Anybody got any recomandations on equipment?
As a younger man i was a big fan of paintball and remember the days of pump pistols and 10 ball tubes. There's some seriously fancy gear out now a days.
Before you go mad on paintball gear, take a look at airsoft. It's a lot more tactical and the gear is way cooler.

I nearly bought a P90 for a laugh (I don't do airsoft but I love the design of those guns) but then I read up on the restrictions on buying them in the UK, registering with a club etc. etc.

True enough, so join a club, you wouldn't want a P90 and not shoot someone with it would you?
I think some shops include a membership if they also have an airsoft site. I don't know any down Somerset way though, Ground Zero near Prtsmouth may be your best bet.

While our guys were stalking each other on one course, a bunch of hardcore paintballers were fighting an open war on another...with paintball machine guns! Made quite a racket!

I dont think they were actual machine gun action Steve...
I saw several of them "tuning" their guns... apparently the trigger is actually a rocker switch.. so by rocking it back and forth they can achieve a high rate of fire...
So while our group was out doing battle you would hear pop.... pop pop.. pop pop pop pop..pop....pop pop..... from the other group it sounded more like 4 or 5 machine guns going off simultaneously... and of course one of the results of this was that their battles only lasted about a minuit and a half.. no survivors!

Yeah there was a serious arms race going on as the sport became popular in the late '80's and early 90's. Long barrels for range, 7oz tanks, high capacity gravity fed hoppers and so on, each one having a radical effect on game tactics. I'll bet it's a totally different game with the stuff they have nowadays.

Actually when I was a kid we didn't have paint ball. We had epic neighborhood battles using crab apples and slingshots, our parents trash can lids for shields and even mason jars filled with bees as grenades. How's that?

I used to do the rock and dirt clod fight thing.... until mom found out.
We had a big Mulberry tree in the back yard which made nice red "bloodstains" on the victim. According to mum it was a bugger to wash out of our clothes and hair though.:D

Jars with bees and wasps in bring back some 'stinging' memories believe me.

Been there too:roll:
Do you think kids still do that or have the times made it obsolete?

Anybody got any recomandations on equipment?
Yeah. Stay away from Brass Eagle stuff if you can help it. I would also recommend the Spyder Sonix as a good, affordable, weapon, but evidently it doesn't survive the pressure changes in airplanes too well. When I got home, I disassembled mine and found 2 dislodged gaskets.:shifty:
The most important thing is to find a marker that is comfortable for you to shoot, and has an acceptable rate of fire (between 5 and 15 balls per second) You might want to stay away from full-autos since many fields do not allow them. A barrel-squeegee (barrel cleaner) is also a good piece of gear to have, and you'll want to invest in some fog-suppressant lens spray for your mask. A motorized hopper is nice, and almost necessary for some of the faster guns.
Here's a link to a guy on expertvillage that has some good lessons and tips for paintball. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0DJ-RS5jOM They start off a bit slow, but his more advanced videos show some good techniques, like face and kneesliding, as well as bunkering and laning principles. Just look through the related videos. Even better, he covers both woodsball and speedball.
In the meantime, prepare yourself for Subsim paintball 2009:D
