Just had my first GWX aircraft destroyed after 8 months of war! Sailing off the Hebrides I get a report of an aircraft spotted. I see that it is an Anson, and as the weather is calm, I decide to take her on. Order the flak guns manned and for them to open fire at medium range. One opens fire but the other gun stays quiet, so I boot Bernard off the gun and replace him with a petty officer. He joins in and I see smoke start to appear from the plane.

The plane is now shooting back, but the rounds go wide as my gunners contiue to pour rounds into the bomber. The plane loses control, crashing astern of me. We celebrate one in the eye for costal command!

A ASW trawler is spotted latter heading for us (called in by the bomber), but gets no contact of us, and moves away. A flower corvette turns up later and gets a torpedo for it's trouble!:arrgh!:

Haven't done too bad this patrol, 14,000 tons sunk with only 4 torpedoes used. Most sinkings have been by deck gun due to good weather, no longer an option as it's changed. I had to use 2 torpedos to sink a small cargo vessal (the forst torpedo hit the engine room, leaving it dead in the water, but not sinking it. The second did!:yep:)

Now taking up position off the the bottom of Ireland hoping to take out a convoy reported heading in my direction. It could shape up into a very nice patrol!

Always good when you can pull something like that off, gives you confidence for the rest of the patrol, keep up the good work:up:I love the way they call out mates to come and deal with you as well;)

During the 27 patrols of my current career (it's april '44 now), I shot down only 5 aircrafts, and regreted every single one because I was damaget at each occasion.

Yeh, I remember the feel of accomplishment on one of my patrols ages ago when I shot down a Catalina, I was soooo proud of myself and though "HAHA! This' just the beginning you allied scum! I'm gonna get yaaa!!!". 0.2 seconds later I beached my boat.

Sometimes, you just get steamed: "I don't want to f**king crash dive again! Shoot the bastards!" Still, rarely a very good idea, in my experience.

Not to derail, but do people do a lot of course changes while avoiding aircraft? I tend to just dive, maybe do a quick turn, but then right back onto course within a few minutes. Can they track you this way?

On one patrol,i managed to dispatch 3 Hurricanes just off Gib,sadly though the boat never made it back toi St Nazaire, got pounced in by a cruiser and some destroyers.

I also made my first GWX aircraft kills last night. Usually I dive, but I was pretty much forced to stay on the surface; I'd had my electric engines destroyed after a terrible ordeal with Tribals and an Evarts. I shot down two Avengers as they came at my crippled ship, but I lost a seaman killed :nope:

Limped into Lorient at 8% HI.

I usually just go to periscope depth, seems to work as long as they don't have surface ships helping them out. If I'm spotted, I will do a coupe radical course changes, but that's really it.

I realize that the aircraft aren't going to get any easier, and when I saw an Anson, it was now or never!:arrgh!: I Had a run in with a couple of hurricanes a patrol or two back, only a couple of 20mm rounds at me, but I'm already getting nightmares of B-24's comming over the horizon!:o

The Patrol didn't turn out too bad, came across a convoy and bagged five ships for a total of 45,000 tons. Not bad at all!
