Right so here is the thing, I am playing SH4 with ATO (monsun) and RSRD I am enjoying the change from the stock game but I need some advice from you skippers out there. Obviously Lurker is a very busy man, and cant respond to every question and request someone has so I am turning to the wise old heads around here regarding a couple of problems Im having. Now there not technical problems, just gameplay ones and Im sure some of you already know the answers or can help out.

First up ATO;

Does anyone here have a map showing Atlantic convoy routes? I tried searching the forum here, and even google but I cant find a chart or map with actual routes marked. Im having bother finding convoys due to the extremely crappy sailors I have, and the sheer pot luck chance of running in to one.

Now about getting a new commision. Kriller already told me that you can indeed gain a new commision in ATO depending on your mission rating and dates that boats become available to flottilas. However, Ive played from '39 till Xmas '41 and amassed a plethora of Knights cross, done a lot of patrols, and amased a shedload of renown & tonnage ( 30k+ R / 500k+ T ) and still no new commision. I sailed with the 2nd flottila in an IX boat to start my career and would like to earn a new boat. So to you Captains in the Atlantic, when did you get offered a new boat and what class was it? And what class and flottila did you start with?

Now RSRD;
So far so good not much to ask about this as its pretty straight forward, but there are two things I would like to know.

I noticed I have a snorkel feature on my boat, but its a radar dish. Which radar is it Surface or Air or does it do both?

And during the campaign can I "help out" in any of the major engagements like the battle of Midway? I woudnt mind getting a mission to go pick a fight with some carrier groups.

Thanks for your help and your time everyone its appreciated.

The Atlantic convoy routes were probably more straightforward than those used by the Japanese in the Pacific. Though the Pacific is a much larger ocean, the Japanese weren't crossing it. They didn't travel any further than the British convoys did, but they did have bases on many islands, and many sources of supplies for the Home Islands, so there was a lot of ground for US submarines to cover.

British convoys, on the other hand, were limited. If it was going from North America to Great Britain, it left from Halifax and arrived at Liverpool or London, or a few other places. It doesn't matter - they went somewhere in the British Isles. The same was true of southern convoys, and even moreso with those going into the Med. How many entrances are there? They could deviate the actual course, and did, so the u-boats still had a hard time finding them; but the actual routes were few.

yup, if you just look at the map you'll see certain points where the convoys will simply 'have to' pass through. My main problem with my current setup of RFB/RSRD/OpMon is that I never actually get contact reports on any convoys and I only ever got one chance encounter with a group of fast troop transports (ocean liners)

north and south of Ireland, on their way to the English west coast ports of Liverpool etc, that's where they all have to go in the end. that is of course also where the navy is sure to watch over them, lol

Thank you Steve, that little map will come in handy. I aready know the obvious points what with me being British and having studied WW2, like the entrance to the channel, the irish sea, and the northern route to Iceland. But most of the time my patrol zones are way out in the atlantic well before all these choke points. It means I have to intercept them before they get to the choke points or else I get bombed to bits by coastal command. With that maps arrows I can extrapolate from it and plot some routes to try and find convoys now.:up:

As for my other questions does anyone else have some advice or solutions?

As far as RSRD, the radar you can extend is an air radar, until you get SV radar. At that point it will detect surface contacts as well as air contacts.

I'd dive deep, get your hull crushed, and make no further posts.:p
