I am heading from BF67 patrol area with a full compliment of torps. The seas are mirror smooth and the wind is nil. I'm off to better hunting grounds when I hit an outbound convoy commin' straight at me.

I havn't had many convoys lately so this is going to be fun.

I get contact and submerge. it is mid-afternoon and I cant wait until nightfall. I let the convoy closer and go to full stop and pop up the scope to see whats for dinner.:p

The feast for tonight is 3 whale ships (10,000+K each), 2 large cargo, various smaller ships and running straight and steady..... the HMS Nelson!!!:o All this bounty is guarded by just 1, yes 1 Destroyer!!!

I look at the clock and... I gotta go to work in 45 minutes.:nope:

I decide to hit save and I will have to post the massacre later. Sorry for the tease.

not to spoil your party...

but there are a few rules to SH3 save games:

1. Dont save within proximity of other ships

2. dont save while submerged

doing either of these things can sometimes result in an unstable game once you load or can result in a CTD when you load.

hope it works out ;)

I hope it works out too. You didn't mention the date, so an encounter with AM's are possible if you take out the guns.

I would have paused the game and stationed an armed guard. :|\\

Agreed. It would suck most heartily for you to lose that convoy to the save game bug! :o

BE WARNED!Do a total scope sweep from time to time or you will get bounced by a DD from behind!!!!!

I got lucky with a save not long ago, so roll the dice and see how you go!

Take out the BB and the escort, then, if no ships are armed, you can go on a tonnage spree! Have fun and don't bring back any ammo!:arrgh!:

TBH I've been one of the lucky ones and never had a problem saving near ships or saving underwater. The only thing I alway make a rule on saves is never to save near harbour as that will almost certainly screw up the scripted paths of the ships in harbour.

Go for it and see what happens!

Ditto... :yep:

BTW what year is it? If its early, enjoy your free lunch. Because it won't last long. They will be coming for you.... and the nightmare only gets worse.... :o

I'm back.... Sorry about the wait. To answer a few questions...

It is mid-1940 with a stock Type VII. And I am welll aware of the coming dangers! All I can say is hit it while you can get it!

I usually save at the point when I contact a convoy; not in the midst of it and not when submerged. Not very sporting.

Anyway. I got a belly shot on the Nelson just below the aft turret and it went down like a rock by the stern... 10 minutes or so. I also salvo a large cargo and hit it. BTW, what is with the retarded Destroyers anyway? It's clear weather and once I hit the Nelson, it darts to the rear of the convoy and starts a search... 2Km away!!!

So in all, over a 2 day running battle, I use all Torps and all Gun ammo and all I get only 96,400 tons. :damn: Dammit! I missed the 100 K club. Oh well. I'll just get it next mission. Happy hunting, Y'all.

So what's the alternative...."Why are the escorts so psychic?....They always seem to know precisely where I am!!"

When the surface vessels are aware of your presence in the area they commence zig zagging and escorts commence searching the area they believe you are in.

As in RL, they don't always get it right. http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9708/piratebf4.gif (http://imageshack.us)

I've been meaning to ask about this. How does GWX factor this? That is, how is it decided where the escorts will search? Will you "get away with it" or will you be fighting for your life at 200m...is it something akin to a random variable that is simply chosen or does it involve more complex issues like probable angle of attack etc.:hmm:

There are a lot of variables the game engine takes into consideration (conditions, depth, speed, location, angle bearing, crew skill etc. etc.) as well as random factors.

Without the SDK it would be impossible to give a definitive answer/explanation.

It goes without saying, many many hours were spent tweaking and testing the resultant consequences of each alteration. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
