In the past couple days the number of people on the forums has plunged! What's going on? I understand that an old game will eventually lose its appeal, but this decline seems very sudden.

I think the hardcore forum members are at the subsim meet thing.

GoldenRivet
10-13-08, 09:19 PM
yes... you'll see a return to pre subsim meet levels in a day or two.

Also, right when i got home from the meet i completed several patrols and a sh*t load of honey do's.

I would guess that a lot of the "hard core" types are in the same situation.

Just a lot of boats out on patrol right now, thats all

:o:hmm: Huh?

Threads posted to for Monday, Oct 13th, the day this question was asked:

SH III Main forum: 24 threads (19 of them new since last week, 5 were replies to older threads)
SH III Mods forum: 20 threads

Comparing to last week, and granted, this is only threads who's last post was on last Monday (the 7th) you get:

SH III Main forum: 15 threads (Assume 20 or so based on previous threads from today)
SH III Mods forum: 20 threads

So, yeah today (which I believe was a holiday?) was actually a little more active than last Monday, which brings me to my question, what do you mean where is everybody? :)

I'm afraid that poor old SH3, all togather with GWX, is losing the race with time-wheel...

Despite it's gameplay... visuals are far away from Oct 2008 standards...

Thanks God that OLC gave some visual-life to this great sim.

Just hope that Privateer and wolves understand that only visual improvement could "save the patient"...

Everything else in GWX3 would be surplus effort for 2009... gameplay is already fine, for the last two years...

Can't beleive that SDK for SH3 is secret...:rotfl:

...or SH5 is closer than we think ?

Considering the number of people playing GWX and taking into account the fact that some peoples computer specs don't afford them the ability to play SH4, I envisage many people playing GWX3 well into 2009 and beyond.

With regard to the SDK:

Even if it were released tomorrow, it would be of little use now, apart from allowing one or two tweaks to be made to obstacles that have never been overcome thus far.

Too much work (from a GWX perspective) has been undertaken to the SH3 game engine and would need to be undone first before any remedial work could be performed.

The game engine in SH4 should hopefully give a lot more scope for modding purposes

During the Grand Sumsim Meeting someone wrote there was a drop in attendance on this forum.

Someone else mentioned that this was due to people being in Houston.

Now, the Houston survivors are back. but forum numbers are nearly half of what they used to be even in the early days of SH-4 and the grand exodus to the Pacific.

Maybe we need to dig and revive the Who is keeping the honor of the U-boats thread.

As I have explained recently, I was away over the summer because my computer and time was tied up with helping my nephews learning about how to compile, configure, modify, and admin a server for a game they love to play.
:lurk:

It was probably the last go at having such fun with them as the usual distractions and diseases of being a teenager have begun to set in and I go from being the "cool" uncle to just the "crazy old" uncle.

I plan on playing SH3 until the wheels fall off, so to speak. After all, it's a long way to go until 1945 and I'd like to try a career with at least one variant of each u-boat type as my primary boat, after I complete my main career that moves forward with improvements in u-boat technology. Then there's the monsun boats, Mediterranean, Black Sea, Indian Ocean, and long-haul Type IX missions to the Americas and Carribean.

And that's just with GWX! I still have NYGM, WAC, Frontflotille, and AOTD to explore, not to mention trying out online multiplayer missions. :yep:

I'd like to see an online flotilla for us old sea dogs to have as a gathering place.

I also should mention that I've noticed an influx of new recruits in the past week or two. It's easy to spot some because they're asking about using old mods that are still linked in the Subsim website. There's even been one or two familiar names that have made their presence known recently.

It wouldn't surprise me if I were the one to turn out the lights as I'm the last out the door. Until then, Brag, let's break out the bottle and toast our victories, escapes, and absent friends in service to our beloved virtual Ubootwaffe! :()1:

Okay, so i am new HERE ... but I have a LOT of xp with Ubisoft simulators (mostly flight), but I was a long time SHII and AotD player. In fact AotD got me to play AotP and AoE so it now comes full circle .... sub sims to flight sims and back to sub sims.

Is there a thread that discusses the relative merits and contents of the various Uber-mods that you listed ... or the added patrols that are listed ? Sort of a clearing house for them ... yes i have seen the thread with all the mods listed ... but that is more of a warehouse for mods ... I am looking for a storefront with a little advertising, a screen shot, and a short description of what makes WAC different from GWX and or NYGM ... ? :hmm:

The SH4 boards aren't that busy either. Those of you who are fairly new only know what it's like when something big has been released. The way it is now is fairly normal for in-between-the-next-big-thing times.

Well I have another theory. Now, I don't want to cause any trouble. But I'll say it anyways. There's one person (whom I don't even remember seeing a year ago) that walks around the SHIII forum like he owns the place. Posting like his word is the gospel truth and even (what I think) semi-hijacks threads with his own stories etc...
Now, this can be a huge turn off to 'quieter' posters who don't like overbearing people. I'm not going to mention any names, I'm pretty sure the person recognizes himself anyways.
Just a thought... Maybe I'm way off.

I am one of the newer capt's on the stage, but I am checking in. I probably spend 4 hours a day with SH3 related things,

I have recently loaded SH4 and quite honestly the only thing I do with it, is to wonder why it doesn't look as good to me as 3 and what is all the fuss about?

I think that the upcoming gwx 3 will resurrect this game as long as the graphics are on par with whats out there right now.

Why would anyone want to go to SH4 when the first thing they are doing is trying to make it a Uboat game. SH3 is perfectly good, has a great engine to it, the mods that have been created by all of you have breathed new life into it.

When asked why I play it,, I cant say anything but it looks great and the action is perfect.

It's mid-semester for me, so I can't spend as much time as I would like goofing with mods and such. As a result, I have far fewer questions to ask.

Also I bought an HDTV for the first time, my TV for the past ten years has been a little 19" guy that has color/tint issues and occasionally makes quirky sounds. That may have something to do with much of my spare time.

Heck! If anything, there are a great many more Subsim forum users online now than have been for a long time! (More than 1500 at the time of this post.)

Strange that there are still usually more people in the SH3 forums than the SH4 forums.

This old timer is still around.
The Atlantic and the U-Boats will always be i think my first love. I still have fond memories of Aces of the Deep. Recently i had a bit of a clear out of really old computers games among other stuff. When i picked up that old game although i know i will never play it again i just did not have the heart to get rid of it. It almost seemed i was throwing an old friend away. Sad really spending so much time playing a computer game. I guess most people would tell us to get a life. Most don't and never will understand that we don't play this simulation, we are in fact in it.
