View Full Version : oh CRAP! What the blazes just happened???
April 7, 1942
0200hrs
approx 500 mi W of Ireland
Heavy seas, Heavy fog, heavy rain
U-456 steaming due E, recharging batteries. Game running at 256tc. I'm reading a magazine when suddenly all hell breaks loose! Reports of heavy damage, system failures, flooding.....! I drop my mag and rush to the damage control station only to see half the after compartments destroyed and crew dead. I try and make it to the bridge, but we all die before I can get there. Screen says something about collision?!? I don't even know what hit us, destroyer? cargo ship? I expected this kind of thing from a aircraft, but hoped to have more warning for a ship, even in a storm, than that. Maybe a destroyer with who picked us up on radar and charged straight on through the storm at us???
Oh, well 'dead is dead' and on to a new career.:damn:
I'll bet lots of subs were lost during the war and their crews never knew what hit them. You're just there one minute and gone the next. ouch.

Just last week in heavy weather, viz was maybe 50 meters, I was trying to line up a heading off the wake of a ship I glimpsed and could not get a solution in time - at that moment a scraping sound, grinding and I look up to see another cargo (in a pair) bearing down on my hull. I banged off her. White knuckle. I had another close call in the same conditions but dove under the vessel before it nailed me - I was inches away from losing my boat in a collision. If she had a keel I would have riped off my conning tower.

I had a close call last night, Almost lost a officer, and a sub. Distroyers pinned me to the bottom, because I got hit by a DC that damaged my Pressure hull and distroyed part of my deck case. So we took the 120meter plunge to the bottom with my electric engines distroyed. Dcs were being dropped all around me. With my most sucessful carear to. (I play DID) The dc were so close they were rocking the Heck out of my boat.

Once the same happened to me. I ran aground a microisland I could not see in the nav map until I zoom several times. My plotted pathway crossed the microisland north of the starit between Ireland and Scotland.

Appears SH3 has lots of these little Islands, Ive seen acouple of threads like this before.:yep: Someone runs into alittle patch of land in the middle of a place that appears to be a ocean.;)
Could be AI sub you hit

Last night I was playing, ( SH3 1.4 GWX 2.1, No other mods) December, 1940 patrolling the BF grids south of Ireland. This is before radar. I was time compressing at 512 when suddenly the TC drops to 8, just like it does when you have a contact updated in the vinicity. I check the nav map but no contact is updated. Weather is perfectly clear, and the sea is as flat as a sheet of glass.
The Watch tower is up at full effiency, I ask the WO for the nearest visible contact. No visible contacts. So I bump the TC back up to 512 and immidiately the WO screams "were under attack" As soon as I go to the bridge as shell grazes the conning tower. I check the nav map there are no ships in the vinicity, I ask the WO again, "no visible contacts" again. WTF im going. So I crah dive down to 150 meters and what happened was a Lone Flower Corvette was firing at me from beyond the horizion, like 8km away.
I rigged for silent running and evaded him from there. He couldn't ping me but was just gusssing where I was and dropped DCS at random. I discovered that he was running a screen for a passing convoy, he was covering the extreme flank of it.
I surfaced when safe, plotted a course and intercepted the convoy. I was in a good position ahead of it but was dectected by the lead escort. It wasn't by periscope spotting either. So I had to dive deep and had to abort the attack to survive.
My whole point to this is, I understand that crazy things happen when running under TC:nope:

I was attacking a convoy the other night, I'd snuck inside it's first row and was attacking the ships at the core. I fired my front tubes at overlapping ships ahead of me and started to turn the UZO to check how far behind me the outter row was and well.. I'd misjudged things!
I was in fact in the direct path of the outer row and a ship was 60m from me, broadside! I went flank and started to turn towards it and got rammed slightly.

Interesting....:hmm:
I had not considered that possibility. I do remember the screen did say something about collision so I just assumed it was another ship of some kind. This was the first career I had 'lost' and not just quit or retired. I don't have anything to compare it to. What does it say when you are killed by aircraft or depth charges?? I can imagine maybe a mine, but not in over 1000m of water. I just wish I had been able to make it to the bridge to see if there was a ship. The fortunes of war I guess.:nope:

I suspect it was not a ship - only guessing as my encounteres had horrific gnashing of steel (actually quite startling audio and well done!!). I was SE of Greenland in heavy fog.

Load your last save to see if a microisland is on the way you plotted. If you play DiD, then submerge to crush depth and the result will be the same:up:

Could have been a iceberg.;)
(GWX 2,0 Commander)
It is a clear bright night with low windspeed and I was entering the channelrun in -39 (my first patrol). Going at TC128 watching the map for contacts, the detection indicator is all in the green.
Suddenly it goes RED, not a sound from the bridge, I enter the bridge my self.
Not a 100 yards out of the starboard bow a destroyer comes running down on me at a 90 degree angle.
I crashdive in the same moment as he open fire, fortunatlty he waited too long and the projectile went above out heads. The only thing he could do was to target us with the machineguns, with minor damage as a result.
A few months later Im on patrol on a clear night with medium winds. I get a contact report of a lone merchant in close proximity. I intercept and am on route when I get an update on the contact now in visible range from us but not a word from the bridge I go to the bridge. Same thing we are bow to bow with a merchant not 200 yards out.
Fortunatly he does not spot me until we pass one another and he cant ram me.

I doubt you hit land, unless you were going in reverse! Could have been a mine or a ship, money is on a ship.
I was steaming along off the bottom of Ireland it similar weather conditions (Heavy seas, fog, rain, and so on) when I get the XO screaming we are under attack! A black swan comes steaming out of the fog with all guns blazing straight towarrd me! I crash dive, while taking damage. Just get below 20 meters when he off loads a major can of woop ass on me. Needless to say that all she wrote!:x
