This theory just popped into my head. Think about it, what is the US Gov buying up? An international insurance company has data on customers about what it is they own and where just for starters. Banks with credit cards have data on what it is exactly that people buy. This is just the tip too. They will have dirt on virtually everyone soon...

This just went from annoying to SCARY for me. I know the US Gov is jealous of the data retention capabilities of industry, for which the US Gov is barred from collecting....

Personally, I don't think that's the reason. I think the US government gathers and retains information in spite of bans against it, so they have no need to buy up companies just to get that information.

And cheaply. Keep interest low and credit flowing, people think the good times will never end! They get into trouble, things fail, and now the US Gov can buy the companies with the information for cheap.

Suit yourself, but $700 billion is not out the door - there is assets attached, and no matter how much you think that failed mortgage is worth nothing, there is still a house attached to it for example.

They will end up making $$$ on this deal.

And one more thing - $700 Bil couldn't 'buy' this kind of information. It is restricted. The Gov has no ability to get it without court order. This way, they have it all.
