I've been looking at getting a hold of Company of Heroes. From the shots I've seen it looks like alot of fun. So is it worth a buy or should I pass on it from a simulation point of view?

Even if you're tired of companies trying to milk out the WWII genre, it's still worth a look, if only because it's an RTS instead of a FPS. I thought it was pretty neat, albeit a bit action-ey in a few places. If there's a demo somewhere that you can download, try it, and then decide for yourself afterwards.
Its fun, I don't have the expansion though.
Not much replayability imho, but I dont play online.
If you are after simulation you should pass, its all about boom-boom. I think its a bit fun, though, but as Rilder says there is no replayability.

CoH is definitely worth a look if you enjoy rts games. Its true its "action" paced at times - but your reliving a war history - that wasn't won by building a base, defending it and then crushing the enemy every time.
The "squad" funtionality with weapons was really a nice thing. While replayability isn't great, there is a VERY active mod community that extends the game's life. Plus the skirmish AI isnt bad. I don't play online either, but I consider it a must have game personally. One note -don't buy the Opposing Fronts expansion unless its either bundled at a good deal, or you see it in the bargain bin. The Brits are horrible when it comes to armor in this game. The added german faction has some good points, but not enough to make the expansion worth its original cost.
the vanilla game might not be realistic, but with the True War Mod its alot more realistic..its one of the only reasons i still bother playing it
then ofc. there is also the battle of the bulge mod

The game is really good. I like it. However, I haven't really played it all that much. It came free with my video card when I got it back in January. The graphics are great and the sounds are phenomenal. When you have a unit off screen give you an audio report it comes across all scratchy as if he's talking over a radio. It is a really neat effect. Explosion sounds will blow you away (bad pun, I know!). I don't play online either. I like the skirmish mode and played that when I did play the game. I don't know why I never really gave it a chance. I highly recommend it. You can't go wrong with it.

I can understand the main campaign has no replayability, after all on all the RTS i played i very rarely played a campaign twice after finishing it once.
So my primary interest in a RTS is the skirmish mode.
Some additional questions regarding skirmish in COH :
-Is there several gametype in the skirmish mode ?
Some RTS like AOE2 by example have some variation of the usual "destroy the opponent" gametype (regicide, capture&hold, etc...)
-Is there any options to customise a bit the skirmish game before it starts ?
as an example, while in Homeworld 2 there was very options, in Homeworld 1 you could customise the game a lot more (ressource, injections, bounties, unit cap, etc...).
-About the AI, as i do not play online and i am not interested in MP anymore, is the AI really challenging and interesting to play ?
Some skirmish based games feature so bad AI (the Command&Conquer/RA serie by example that always featured an unchallenging AI) that i am now extremely picky regarding a RTS and refuse to buy any RTS without a decent skirmish AI.
-Is the AI able to play team games correctly ?
While most RTS allow team games even with AI, not every RTS have an AI actually capable of functionning as a team (trading/defense assistance/combined assault etc...)

you have 2 Game types in Skirmish
1. Annihilate : as the name says just destroy every building the enemy has in his base.
2. Point capture: you have a number of important point sectors which you have to capture. you have for example 3 of them on the map. if you have at least 2 in control the enemy points will drain till it hits Zero which means that the team has lost. so you have to do everything to keep in control at least 2 of them to make the enemy team lose their points.

Nothing much to customize.
-Annihilate game mode or Point Capture game mode (this gives you a extra option about how many points per Team)
-Fixed or Random positions on the Map.
-Basic starting resources or More Starting Resources
-you can change the Weather or day or Light of the map.

The Enemy AI is pretty decent, but after a while..it is and will stay A.I which you can figure out after a few games. havent tested their behaviour in Point capture thought. I play this game online thought...but mostly just with friends who are there to have fun instead of the 5 minutes Rush fest. I still have to play against Expert AI but I will do that soon (Currently playing games against Hard AI now and then)

They do help you out, like repairing your damaged tanks, building Machine gun nests and other defenses to help defending an area/base.

I got this game when it first came out, but my PC needed some upgrading to run it and several others, so never played it through. Got interested again, so I'm in the process of getting the patches. Got some serious downloading to do, that's for sure. The first patch, which takes you from version 1.00 to 1.40 isn't too bad at 106 MB, but the next one that goes from 1.40 to 2.101 is one heck of a file! 1,822 MB in fact, lol What's in that Uber patch?

for the ones that havent got OF expansion the files needed to keep your game able to been played online. so you are able to play with people that have the OF expansion.
