The retail and download versions will use starforce.
The retail version will have also authenticate on a weekly basis.
The net result ? I will pass on, I'll spend my money on a game that deserves it. For every publisher that sees the light (good old games, bethesda, etc...) there is a blind and stupid publisher I guess.
Call it the yin/yang of pc games.

Maybe there will be differences in localised versions, regarding Starforce. It has been like that with different parts of the IL-s series, for example. No part of it in the German version ever had Starforce, some of the other versions had.

If it has starforce, I will regret it, but leave it behind nevertheless.

Uhm maybe. I'm pessimist though.
After lomac every game they made and localized for western audiences have had starforce.
Oh well, I will not loose my sleep over this issue.
To their defense, the game looks really nice and it will have a 500 pages spiral bound manual. Too bad they don't see the value in publishing a game as bethesda does. Its not as if this game will breach the mainstream.

Is that really a defense? :) Sounds more like a loosing strategy of theirs. They will be in the middle of a controversy, and it will cost them customers - and that with something that maybe is too complex to be attractice for the mainstream market. I would call that simply stupid a strategy, and a waste of the potential they worked so hard for to raise.

Well, my life quality does not suffer without Blackshark.

In addition to the Russian version, a single western version (DVD and download) including support for English, French, German and Spanish is currently in development. Much work still remains localization and there will be a 90-day period between when the western version is completed and submitted to the various Age Rating Authorities required by the law (for USA ESRB, PEGI for Europe (less Germany) and USK is Germany) , Then presented to distributers and when The Game will be available for purchase. Although The Game will be completed in 2008, it may not be available for purchase until early 2009.

Between now and the release of the western version, we will be releasing free content for DCS: Black Shark to include: the DCS User Manual, the Ka-50 Flight Simulation Handbook, and probably an English-only interactive demo.

Does that mean the ,manual is not part of the download package...?

The printed, spiral-bound 550 page Ka-50 flight manual will also be available for sale.

Both the retail and digital download versions of DCS: Black Shark will be using the latest version of StarForce. The DVD version will require a weekly check. This decision was made after... (etc blabla etc blablabla)

Which DVD version? the Russian/CIS version? the european version? Both versions? they talk in singular here, although there obviously will be two versions at least.

However, Goldorak's pessimism probably is justified.

Hope they lose on it. :arrgh!: Me they have lost for sure.

Maybe I wait half a year and then legally buy a full version once a "patch" :) to install it without SF has been released, like it was with SH3. But ooops - not discussing that on this forum! ;)

Well that sucks. Not that my machine would run it well at full GFX settings.

Funny how it is a Russian developer using starforce, which is Russian. Wonder if they were bullied into it?

Can't say my computer will run it, it barely ran LOMAC/FC. But maybe I'll pick it up down the line.

I doubt that. Eagle Dynamics probably just hasn't faced serious legal threats concerning its use of Star Force. Ubi did, IIRC, and stopped using it.

AFAIK the manual is on the CD/in the download package as a pdf.

If you want a hard copy for reading "in the smallest room" then you can either print it yourself, get a local print shop to print it for you, or order a printed manual online.

Reading the news of Starforce on Blackshark sucks.

simHQ has a thread about it. It is confirmed. I'm out of it, therefore.

Its very regrettable that ED has decided to ship BS with SF. There was a poll on the DCS forums and 55% said they wouldn't buy Black Shark if it came coupled with Starforce. A lot of chaps over at Frugalsworld and in the Lock On community who would have snapped it up without a second thought aren't getting it now. ED has just alienated a HUGE portion of the already small flight simulation market. I can't understand the reason why a DOWNLOADED version would contain Starforce? I mean without a disk WHATS THE BLOODY POINT!?! :damn::damn::damn::doh:

Saying that, SHIII/LO:FC both contain Starforce and luckily I have encountered no problems as of yet *touch wood* and will be purchasing Black Shark the day it comes out... its just a shame that an awful lot of my flying buddies won't be because of f**king "copy protection" software. I just hope that DCS:BS isn't a complete flop in the West because of it, as it would put future modules in doubt...

The latest news are that the protection mechanism is being revised in worse for the western release.
Not onyl will the game check every week for the cd, but you will be obliged to activate it over the internet (and i suppose the number of activations will be limited).
Way to go Eagle Dynamics.
