I like the B sub-types for both VII and IX boats, couldn't imagine anyone upgrading to the C sub-types. The only other sub-types I entertains VIIC/42 and IXD2.

Why would a captain in GWX or in the real war switch from a VIIB to a VIIC?

While the VIIC was larger than the VIIB, and therefore slower, it included several improvements including the ability to dive approx 45m deeper (250m vs 295m).

Taken two viic/41's to the end of the war. That could be why.

I rarely even bother with going for a XXI anymore. Don't think the game properly emulates one anyway. Type 9's have two advantages, distance and more firepower. But they are also sonar magnets.

The VIIC was slower, but only by half a knot. It also carried more fuel, and was more adaptable to later upgrades.

That said, I'm pretty sure captains rarely 'upgraded' to any other boat. They might go from a II to a VII, but not change within subtypes. That's a game thing.

The IXB is plenty upgradeable. I don't know why you'd choose a IXC other than a tiny range increase. As for a XXI, it is too uber, but it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooo much better than a IX you can't even mention them in the same sentence. The faster reloads, the lightning underwater speed, a comparable range, and fully upgraded components make it just nasty. With a rear-firing tube and a deck gun (or bigger AA gun), this would be the ULTIMATE WW2 boat. As it is, it's pretty close! :o

As the war goes on the VIIC is your friend. It can crash dive faster and go deeper. The VIIB may be a slightly better hunter but I know which one I'd rather be in especially from 41 onwards.

Personally, from a purely aesthetics point of view, I find the VII's much more appealing then the IX's. To me they just look like "the" iconic submarine, which I guess they are in reality.

Of coase their quick dive time and maneuverability come in pretty handy as well, but I prefer the VII's just for their looks, call me superficial.

:arrgh!:

Edit: Im curious why the VIIB would be considered a better hunter then the C, arent they virtually the same, other then 0.5 knot speed difference?

Totally agree. How could you not go for a XXI, really?

I forgot to mention that the XXI turns like a II. And it dives like a homesick dolphin. ;)

How do homesick dolphins dive, exactly? :hmm:

I agree. I normally play with realistic career length anyway so my careers rarely last more than 5-6 patrols before I am beached. I want to take my present career to about 11 patrols, but not much longer than that.
