There doesnt seem to be an abandon ship button nor a way to radio for help - IE, we're out of fuel from depth charge damage....come pick us up.

Sure there is, just press "Esc" on your keyboard. :o

....but then it says sub destroyed and I fail.

I like the realism aspect - staying alive is key, even if the boat does go down. I'm surprised/dissappointed this isnt in. Wasnt there an abandon ship button in SHII, if I recall correctly.

Does any existing mod address this?

SH2 did have that, SH4 doesn't as far as I can tell. I do wish it had a feature where you could steer by using your engines to get you home. My rudder was destroyed once and I had to beach the boat on the China coast. At least we didn't drown. Main thing is don't run out of fuel.

I don't believe any boat in WWII called for help and got a tow home......hold it! U-505 got a tow, but not home.:rotfl:

Submarine Tender anyone? The US Navy designation was AS.

"Submarines are relatively small compared to most oceangoing vessels, and generally do not have the ability to carry large amounts of food, fuel, torpedoes, and other supplies, nor to carry a full array of maintenance equipment and personnel. The tender carries all these, and either meets up with the submarines at sea to replenish them or provides these services while docked at a port near the area where the submarines are operating. In some navies, the tenders were equipped with workshops for maintenance, and as floating dormitories with relief crews."

The submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9) received severe damage when hit by heavy bombers on December 29, 1941.

Yeah, but the thing here is that a tender also needs to be replenished every now and then, and they can't just cruise solo into Japanese waters. It does sound like something that you could make a mod out of though, a friendly "harbor" that travels with the occasional friendly task force.

But to address the original question, the thing to think about here is, even if you do manage to abandon ship, what then? Spend the rest of your career as a Japanese POW? Wouldn't be very fun to experience.

Yeah, I know.

I'd settle for a percentage chance though - Based on proximity to a friendly base vs. enemy. Even just the option to man the life rafts would be nice and letting the chips fall.

Hitting escape and exit to main menu blows all immerison, for me.

In this particular case I was based out of Manilla and right off the coast of Aparri when stranded...I could see land...

Same here. "Abandon ship" and then either KIA, POW, or Rescued to resume your career - if you're not fired by the brass .... lol

There is no 'Abandon Ship' order in SH3 or SH4. It would be nice if you could surrender, or abandon ship somewhere and have a chance of being rescued, or captured, but they didn't do that.

You say that as if no one has ever heard of one until now. Somebody saying they replenished subs at sea doesn't make it so. I've never heard of a case of that happening. I was on a destroyer, not a sub, but our tenders were strictly harbor-bound. Their function was to serve as a portable base for the small ships. They had full repair facilities and everything you could want but a drydock, but they were too precious to send scurrying around helping wayward lambs.

I had fun getting towed home in SH1, but I never heard of that happening in real life either.

It was an informational sentence. Don't be so sensitive.

It's a game. IMO there's no reason why the crew should die of C02 poisoning at 26' when I can go on the bridge. That isn't realistic to take the plunge to 1,000's of feet and crush when they could easily abandon ship at 26' and take their chances swimming.

It has been discussed many times, plain and simple, it's not in the game. And the sub tender is in the game but it won't replenish your sub either. That's just the way it is.

(And for the new guys that are going to pop in and tell me that the sub tender does set up refit stations during the war, the sub tender does nothing!)

i think your only hope was maybe a tanker could be sent to refuel you but with no engines i think you would be told to just skuttle the boat when a ship arived to pick you up rather than take the risk of losing another ship in a towing attempt.

you would be like fresh meat in a shark tank :dead:

I don't know where they got the idea you were asking for a tow home.... ....quite a leap there.

There were indeed a couple of recorded instances where submarines were disabled or grounded and had to call for help from friendly forces. Some were taken aboard other vessels and thus rescued..some were never found.

Sadly as you observed , there is no such radio for help option at your disposal.

On the other hand ,if that were a solution you could readily employ just to avoid watching your speed, range, and fuel consumption...then I must say that would be an immersion killer too..big time.

My game is missing the "Press here to win" button :p

Well I'm going to press this issue because Abandon ship is a big deal to me. I am not asking for a tow home or a press this button to win, nor do I have 15,000 + posts:
(And for the new guys that are going to pop in and tell me that the sub tender does set up refit stations during the war, the sub tender does nothing!)
However - for example: On her 5th war patrol during the night of 13-14 August 1942 S-39 (SS-144) ran aground off Rossel Island in the Coral Sea. All hands were rescued 16 August by the Bathurst class corvette HMAS Katoomba.

An Abandon ship option with three random outcomes; KIA, POW, or rescued would be historically accurate. The OP said he could see land.

I can turn this around too: Just because SH3 & SH4 don't have that option doesn't mean it didn't happen. I am not requesting a sub Tender and a tow, merely the chance for a rescue to save my crew.

Hopefully this feature will be an option in a future mod even if I have to learn how to do it myself... lol

Look Im not trying to razz or belitlle your posts. Just trying to have a little fun. ;)

Simple fact is it is not in the game.

This topic has been discussed ad nausiem since the day of release. Its still not in the game nor will it ever be in this version.

The developers most likely would have liked to include such an option but as they say ~fly endless time~
