View Full Version : Do armed merchants have limited ammo?

I've been stalking a split merchant for over an hour in-game and she's been firing at me for almost all of that hour, but seems to have unlimited ammo. I'm over 4km away in rolling seas (my depth keeps moving between 4 and 11m) so the chances of me being hit are minimal (I think her guns are 20mm), but will she eventually run out of ammunition to let me get closer to put an eel in her or am I going to have to go to periscope depth to avoid her fire?

Oh, if we're talking AA guns, they had the room to carry stacks of the stuff, and I'm betting they did.

My first watch officer was killed yesterday by a nasty merchie gun. Gun duels on GWX are a losing proposition for U-boats. :nope:

Not just GWX. Back when the game was new, somebody reported trying sink a merchant with gunfire, only to have their machine gunners kill his entire highly trained deck gun crew.:dead:

Those single merchants with only a forward gun are getting hard to find. :ping:

Limped back to port from one fine carrer patrol from surfacing broadside on a juicy target. I didn't bother to identify the smaller guns she was holding.

I think that's where a strong video card & AA pays off.

I don't think the game models limited ammunition for merchantmen - if so this is a big flaw.

Not sure about British ships but until late 1942-1943, ammunition for US merchant vessels was extremely limited. IIRC there would be less than 50 rounds for heavy weapons, and maybe a few hundred rounds per AA gun.
