Npw that may come as no surprise to some here :arrgh!:, but actually all I claim to have is a wicked bad head cold. My sinus' are so packed up my upper teeth hurt and the end of my nose is raw from constantly blowing it.

I'm drinking tea with honey atm and Rose is out shopping for some Vicks vapo-rub with which she intends to torture me in some scheme involving a bucket of hot water and a big red towel.

So what i am wondering is what are some home remedy's for head colds in your country/state/province/kingdom/etc? What gets you back on your feet the quickest?

Sorry to hear you're down, and sorry that I know of nothing that helps. I just suffer through things like that, and take lots of cold&flu crap to help with the symptoms.

I remember a Beverly Hillbillies episode in which banker Drysdale has a cold, and his doctor keeps telling him that the only real cure is to get plenty of rest and drink lots of liquids. Jed keeps telling him that Granny has a cure that works every time. After he chokes the awful stuff down they tell him "Now get plenty of rest and drink lots of water, and in three or four days your cold will be gone. Never fails!"

There is a device that looks like a mini tea pot that health food stores have. About 10 bucks or so. You fill it with tepid water with just a pinch of sea salt. You place the spiggot into one nostril and then tip your head down and allow the water to flush out your sinuses, repeat this in the other nostril. I used to get sinus infections and this was far superior than taking anti-biotics and it really works. If you try this do it at leat a few times a day and before bed. Definetely the best thing for a head cold, but will do nothing for the chest.

My chest is clear atm. It seems confined to the nasal passages.

put on heaps of clothes then hop in bed and sweat it out for 24hrs, do nothing just keep warm and sip water or lemon sip. Works for me with colds/flu's I just get myself in bed make sure the temperature is hot and sleep it off for a day, the lemonsip will knockme out i'll wake up 3 or 4 times sweating like a pig but after the long sleep is over im fine. This way a flu or cold never lasts longer than 24hrs. Mild flu that is, Ive never had a bad flu that can keep some in bed for days.

Man you scared me. I thought you had something terminal when I read the title.

On a side note one of my Civil War re-enacting buddies at one of our re-enactments a few years ago became sick. We thought that he had pneumonia. It wasn't pneumonia. He had blood clots in his lungs, and it nearly killed him!!:o He's had major surgery and is okay now, but he was very near death a few times. Scary stuff.

So go get checked out!

I don't profess to know a cure, but whether it be a cold or man flu it's always my sinuses that block up and prevent me from sleeping.

I take Sudafed, it's a decongestant nasal spray and it clears the blockage every time.

I also eat a lot of hot and spicy Indian and Chinese foods whether I have the symptoms or not....which I believe helps me

My grandfather used to drink Cognac when he got a cold. Theoretically, the strong vapours help liberating yoru nose, plus the effect of alcohol relaxing you and reducing your sensitivity to pain helps. My wife mixes a bit of cognac with milk and an aspirine :o and it hasn't killed her (yet), it's another old remedy.

I asked my grandfather long ago wether the remedy was effective and he replied: "Well, it doesn't take the cold away but helps you forget about it. And if I drink enough I even forget your grandmother, which is another positive side-effect"

Ugh, I used get these things all the time. Still recovering from one, in fact.

Traditional treatment: lots of fluids, sleep like a sloth, and try to do something to make yourself sweat. The crap in the nasal passages is the worst part. Oh, and try to get in a mile-or-so run if possible (after the worst of the symptoms have passed). Works wonders for temporary decongesting.

Just got over mine... very similar symptoms. I recommend lots of Vitamin C, Echinacea tea and Tylenol PM (contains a antihistamine to dry out the nasal passages) and lets you sleep more soundly.

Hope you feel better soon.

Sweatfest 2008. My wife does that to me. Absolute bloody torture the teaspoon of vicks in a bucket of just boiled water.

All I can suggest is plenty of rest, lots of fluids (not booze obviously), cold and flu tablets or Lemsip.

Hope you get better soon.

You may want to have the doctor precribe a dose pack of anti-biotics, you may have a sinus infection.

In the tabasco department, I just remembered being told once that hot Chinese mustard can do the trick. And no, don't sniff it, just eat some of the stuff. Never tried it myself, though.

If it persists, you should probably follow Neal's advice. That sounds pretty bad.

Chinese hot mustard has horseradish.

Mr Mcbee is right. Take a grater and the actual horseradish and grate it for about 15 minutes. You will not have a problem with your sinuses for 6 months. And Mcbee, thanks for bringing back repressed bad childhood memories.:damn:

The thing that works for me is the Thera Flu remedies. Just get the one that adresses your symptoms. Usually after a day or day and half, I have all but kicked it out.

Second best thing, is a big wood pile and an axe. Put on enough clothing so you can really work up a god sweat.

Home made chicken soup too is great. Use a whole fryer, cut into pieces. Do not by any means debone or skin the bird. Boil it until the chicken is done, remove the pieces from the pot, and add carrot and celery chopped.

Once the chicken is cool, remove the skin, and debone it then. Cut the pieces into small chunks, and return to the pot. Bring this to a boil again, to cook the vegetables, and season with parsley flakes, onion powder, garlic, and pepper.

This is easy on the stomache, and even if all you have is some broth with noodles the first day, usually by the second, you can start to hold down the veggies and chicken pieces.

Combine the two medicines and in a few days you should start to feel normal again.

I do the above, and rarely do I have symptoms for more than two days.

Definitely go to your local pharmacist and request the 'nose flushing' system that was described earlier. It makes you feel like you swallowed a bunch of water while swimming, but it cleans out your sinuses. When you aren't sick make sure that you spray your nose with a plain saline solution spray regularly as this will be a preventative measure to keep you nose lining moist.

I take a mix of Theraflu and Alka-Seltzer myself besides the sinus flush. A trick with the A.S. is that the less water you have to drink the better...not only the taste, but the mix isn't as deluted. Hope you start feeling better.

Then hit the woodpile, and the Thera Flu. It's the best way to get a grip on that stuff. I know, I hate getting even a runny nose, as it usually turns into a full blown upper resperatory infection, if I don't jump on it pronto.

I appreciate the sentiment but my species didn't claw itself up the evolutionary ladder to eat prey food. :p

Seriously I already am restricted to a nearly meatless diet because of my heart problems but I still can eat fish, bison and venison. No way would i give those up.

Besides, vegans get sick like anyone else. I know this for a fact having had to deal with a sick former vegan GF.

Actually, as a driver in the mountains west of Denver Colo. I have had a few occassions where deer and elk have run me off the road trying to avoid them. Just recently, a car struck a cougar (mountain lion), the one made by the creator of the universe, not the one made by Ford Motor Company.

And I had while living in the mountains, cougars ran off with my dogs in their mouthes, and the other little critters rip apart a heavy duty built dryer for making sun jerky, and take 10+lbs of venison, and fish that I was prepping for hunting season.

My girlfriend laughs when we go to a steakhouse, the waitress asks for my order, and I tell her to bring me the whole cow, I'll carve off what I want and ride the rest home.

On the other hand when was the last time a bison or deer sent me a Christmas card, or helped me move or invited me over to their house to watch the big game or took care of me when i was sick? I wonder if your preference for animals is the result of associating with bad people or are you forgetting all the things your fellow human beings do for you?

Good points, August. Forty-three years ago, when Simon & Garfunkel released the song 'I Am A Rock', I thought the exact same thing. The song is a tirade on relationships (and an excellent one - I'm not knocking it), and ends with the line "A rock feels no pain, and an island never cries." Even at the tender age of fifteen I thought "Yeah, but a rock feels no joy, and an island never laughs, either."

Yep, 1965. Last June the first I posted a thread titled "It Was Forty Years Ago Today". Don't have to say what that was the anniversary of. Next year it will be forty years since the Moon Landing and Woodstock...and since I joined the navy. And the year after that it will be forty years since Janis and Jimmy died and the Beatles broke up.

I got a big age-shock three years ago when a magazine cover pointed out that it had been twenty-five years since John Lennon died.

Well with the difference that you can quit when you want. Actually I'm not even sure if it works, might just drink the water and hydrate the body, might work better.

One part of getting better from a flu is to get back in shape once it's over and regain one's strenght cause the next one might be just around the corner. :nope:

On a related note, here's a good thing to remember that may keep flus and other even more serious diseases from getting around.

I managed a pharmacy for a couple of years, and I still say that working there stopped me getting the flu. Since I started there in 2004 I've avoided the flu, and even in the 2 years since I left, I've had no real dramas with illness. I think of it as a natural inocculation against the different strains, by being exposed to it all in small quantities I was able to get up the antibodies needed :)

It was quite a bonus - another was being the only male on staff:cool: (this was back when I was young and unattached:|\\ )

When i first start getting a cold, I take tons of vit C. Seems to work great for me.

I read that your body can build up a tolerance to vitimin C if you take to much of it. I recomend absolving all rountines in whatever meds you are taking.

I also have been getting over a strange case of the flu that just attacks the body, but not the sinus parts. Tightness around the chest, sweating, fever, headache, body ache, but no runny nose, just lots of spit too.

It's a battle for what we think ... rest and liquids worked for me and remember, no coffee ... coffee acts like a poison to the body and a sick body will react negatively to that beverage.
