Good morning everyone. I hope I am posting this in the correct place and that maybe some of you could help me.

Briefly, my father was serving on board HMS Terpischore in the Aegean Sea in 1944 when this destroyer and others in the company sank German submarine U407. There were 47 survivors who were taken aboard the destroyer just off Milos and from one of the survivors my father took a German Reichmark note and wrote on the back, at the time "taken from survivor of U407 sunk by HMS Terpischore and company at 0444 on 19th September 1944 etc etc................."

My father passed away in 1990 and this currency note together with many others he collected during the war years passed to me. I have always wanted to return this note to any survivor or survivor's family but it has taken until now for me to start searching.

Your forum has this in it's archives:

My, my, your renoun has grown since leaving the 21te. Well done.

My friend, OLzs Herbertus Korndörfer, of the U407 (waw) passes on his best regards and much success to the survivors of the U-Spatz (U406).

You spin a great yarn lass, keep up the good work.

Cheers,

It was posted by don1reed. Does this person still post here? Any help any of you can give would be very kind.

Sorry to intrude on you all.

I'm afraid that was referring to the Wolves At War campaign for the Silent Hunter 3 game. That was his u-boat number within that campaign.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. He does still come by and post, but only occassionally.

I'm sorry for any misunderstanding and the trouble this has put you through. That's a pretty neat piece of history to have. I hope your search proves successful.

Hi Barrie,

at least you can find a crew list for U-407 on this webpage:

http://www.ubootwaffe.net/index.html

Perhaps it´s also a good idea to contact the Submariners Association Kiel e.V.:

http://www.ubootkameradschaft-kiel.de/en/frame-index.htm

I can imagine that they may have informations about surviving crew members.

Good luck on your search!

Michael

Sailor Steve, far from any misunderstanding this has concentrated my search. Thanks.

Michael. Wonderful information. I am very grateful to you. The links you have given are so informative and can I say very touching. I have emailed the Kiel Submariners Association and am keeping my fingers crossed.

One other thing, Michael and something that had bugged me. On the back of the Reichsmark note my late father had also written M08300 - your link tells me that the 'Feldpost' number of U407 was indeed that number. It's another question mark I can now take away. Thank you.
