Silent Hunter 4 U-boat missions

I have just invested in a copy and loaded it onto my machine tried it out for 30mins this was more time then I needed to realise that for me this is a game that is destined for the recycle bin…… why because just like the silent hunter 4 wolves of the pacific game itself there is no immediate felling of emersion into the game. The “deck view has been improved by superior graphics” in who’s opinion because I don’t find this and as for the officer orders bar I really don’t like it overall the whole game is no way near as much fun to play as SH3 is. If Ubisoft want to make a great sub game then they should up date the SH3 game without trying to improve it by making changes people don’t want I just want to patrol in a sub not control aircraft or other units. There are games already out there that give you this …how popular are they up against SH3 the viewing numbers of this forum say it all SH3 is still the overall winner by a mile.

Silent Hunter 4  .......Silent Hunter 3

My opinion is that Silent Hunter 3 fully modded up is still the best sub game

When the GWX team release their mod for SH4, I'll start playing it. Until then, SH3 + GWX 2.1 + <insert your favorite mods here> rules!

I still think there is a certain element of not comparing like for like here.

SH3 is over 3 years old and as such has had more modding work done to it, certainly when compared against SH4.

I play both but eagerly await further modding efforts with the SH4 game engine.

While I agree, SH-4 at this point is to me IMHO like looking at a bright Saturday morning cartoon.

While I appreaite all the hard work by the many members it's only my opinion.

As with many things UBI it was released in a premature state but has survived nicely and now I have a total of 4 installs on my PC.

RFB
TMO
OMV400

and a test bed for many enterprising mods that the community is currently working on.

Yes, I have a long laundry list of gripes, complaints and bugs concerning SH4; but I have one just as long and or longer about SH3 and all of its MOD.

If you want to get rid of your copy, PM me and I will gladly take it off your hands.

One man's opinion of course.

Happy Hunting!

Ask yourself this, what would win between stock SH3 and stock SH4? Hmm... I like SH4 and U-boat missions. I love the graphics, I don't have an uber PC to play Steel Panthers and "classic" games. The answer is obvious. U-boat missions was obviously an attempt to win you old SH3 die hards over. If you can't run it, upgrade your PC. If you don't like it, mod it. I hope people support it, because if not, it will probably be the last PC sub game. Consoles are taking over the game world, PC games will fade away if too many people think they should be able to run the latest and greatest on a 10 year old PC.

Stock SH3 in my opinion would be better than any version of SH4 its in the enjoyment of playing the game SH4 has not got the magic. in my Opinion thats why i stick to the SH3 thread's..... and i dont play SH3 just because my computor cant run SH4. or is it that SH4 players also think they have superior computors to SH3 players aswell ??:hmm:

and just incase you have not noticed Consoles have not just sprung up they have been around for quite a few years now.

Some of the issues that folks had with 4 were very similar to 3 in it's early days, check the archives and you will see that this was the case.

When 4 was announced I can tell you that I did not think I would have much use for it, but once it was lanuched I decided to give it a try and although buggy :doh: in the beginning I found myself playing it more than and more. Having played the shat' out of 3 it was and is a nice change of pace. Plus there have been some great mods made for the PTO.

Having said that I look forward to the continued work on the ATO side of things and 3 is still on the desktop and I look forward to getting back to that theatre eventually :yep:

My first system was an Atari 2600 when I was a kid. What I mean to point out is consoles are threatening PC gaming currently. Take Bioshock for example, Microshaft made it to where the PC version was identical to the XBOX version as not to give an advantage to the PC version. I don't like that PC hostility. Of course the PC's rock. I hope that is an isolated incident but it's worrisome.

Game stores aren't even carrying PC games anymore. PC games aren't dead, but they can use all the help and support we can give them.

yeah... looks like the PC needs to break out the iron lung...
*theactrical sigh*
none of my friends (just my step brother) PC game anymore. its on to the XBOX 360 (horrible in my opinion) and the PS3 (equaly horrible, but a bajillion times more expensive)

but as for immersion and all that happy junk...i can say we (as americans, where i currently reside) had it much easier in the submarine war than the Germans...they failed (i mean in terms of losses) because we got better... we won (again, in terms of losses and things like that) because the axis got dumber.

the german campaign in sh3 is a fight-to-the-death, knife-in-teeth swashbuckling ride through the gates of submarine hell, because you know you are going to lose, therefore you have to try to make the biggest impression possible on british shipping, while playing cat-and-mouse with a british destroyer above dropping thousands of depth charges on/near you...
in sh4 however. it feels like a joyride because you know for a fact you are going to win..sure, knock down a few tankers and maybe a destroyer to DJ's locker. but in the end...you are going to win...therefore...have a little pleasure cruise around the pacific theater...enjoy the sights

(not bad for 17 huh?)

:D Hi everyone!
I see this discussion about SH3 & SH4 isn't over yet , and that's good:)
I must say this , I bought this "SH4 U-Missions " in Sweden in my hollyday , and I was looking forward to this game when I come home . And I was dissapointed:-?
The game was so ugly , and the sea (Good God) was terrible:nope: It is a mystery ,
we are living in year 2008 , so why in the heavens name haven't those guys in Ubisoft made better game:o :o When stock SH3 came out , I agree , it was bad .
But I thought those guys ( in Ubisoft ) had learned from their mistakes , and made a better game , but nooo:dead:
If you compare these two games , it isnt no doubts in my mind , stick to SH3:yep:
I don't know , but I don't think no one can fix SH4 , it is to much to do??

Hmm...my view is that as a game progresses, there should be increased challenges;
historically this fits the losing (axis) side better IMO.

Now with SH3 this is natural, as the enemies become better equipped as the war goes on, and presents more difficulties toward the end of the war.

For american side in SH4 the reverse would historically be true, the more difficult time should be in the beginning, so perhaps that makes sense of the u-boat mission addon?
(I haven't played the sh4 u-boot addon yet, so that is merely my guess.)

I have SH4, and have played it for a while now. But still I prefer good ol' SH3

Why? Simple; SH3 had the feeling of fighting a war that has been lost for long time ago, and you just have to survive way or another, giving such an awesome feeling to the game.
And the hardness of it, oh baby. You can ride me all day long.
You have to fight tooth and nail as the oppoments equipments gets better and better and better, until its simple inpossible to survive without proper sub.

But the SH4, its just a happy-hour war with cartoon graphics, the game is fun to play but, too easy.
I mean, you are on the winners side + the oppoments anti-submarine measures are laughable old compared to Allied's.
And they don't get much better during the war.

The feeling just isn't right.

Also, it lacks good mods (like GWX)

Good thing they made the U-Boat missons add-on.

I respect everyone's thoughts about the game, I'm just stateing what I think about it.

I disagree with most of the summations here. My computer barely runs SH4, but one look at it and I was sold. In my opinion the water does look a lot more real, as does the crew. And the interiors look more real to me too. One of my complaints about SH3 was that the guages looked like they were drawn or painted onto the bulkheads; I compared them poorly to the 2D guage panels in SH1. Of course the Bordeinstrument mod fixed that somewhat, but I think SH4's still look better. The crew look more like real people and less like game figures. The crew management is a vast improvement, and in fact in this case the devs heard what people said the management should have been, listened, and did it exactly as suggested.

As far as this five-year running arguement about which theater is better goes, it doesn't matter. A substantial part of the market is American, and many of us are old enough to have grown up watching movies like Run Silent, Run Deep and reading Roscoe's American Submarine Operations In World War Two, and many of us just like the boats and the action, no matter which side it is.

As to comparing the stock games, I'm with RDP. Maybe you weren't here three years ago to hear all the complaints about how bad SH3 was and how some folks were never going to buy another UBIsoft product ever again. I submit that SH4 compares unfavorably in your mind because you've been playing SH3 and have gotten used to it. Yes, I would have preferred that the interface be the same; I like the little officer icons, and I like the mod that makes all the gui go away except when I put the cursor on them, and then they're really big. But I didn't have that in Aces of the Deep, and I didn't have that in SH1, and if I don't have it in SH4, so be it.

I'm not talking to everyone who has complaints. Those are legitimate, and honest. I have complaints about every game I play. I swear at Pirates every time I play it. But I'm still playing it. My problem is this should have been posted a year ago. There were lots of posts like this when the game was new, and all anyone has to do now is read the threads or ask if there have been complaints.

If you bought the game blind, you have a right to compain; I'm not saying you don't. But I've been hearing "IT SUX!" for so long that I'm tired of it. I'm also with Wilke: if you really hate it that much, just post that you would like to give your copy to someone who wants it. I'll take it.

I assure you the depth charges and bombs sink you just fine. It's nice to be able to play with a capable boat. It's too bad the Nazi party was more worried about the new technology making people homosexual than turning the tide of the war.
