View Full Version : Question of the day, how do you play the Game?

THis morning I was thinking about how I play, which got me to wondering, does everyone do this or how do they play.
My game takes so long to load in career, that I just leave my system and game up, but will pause it when real life calls. I will just save and leave it where I am, that way when the opportunity arises, I can jump right back in where I left off.
I try to visit the game first thing in the morning say between 6:30am to 7:00am, maybe at lunch when I go home, it depends on whats going on in the game. Then maybe for an hour when I get home.
This way I'm not playing for hours at night.
However, if something is happening, such as about to attack, and I had to walk away, I find myself thinking about it. Like now its 1/2 hour til lunch and I have it saved with my screen showing a nice Passenger/Cargo lined up in my sights for when I get home.
I used exit the game but then with all the various CTD's I didnt want to take that chance.

100% difficulty, manual targeting, Dead is Dead. occasionally plotting solutions on graph paper.
If you dont find the tactics or procedures here... The Submarine Commander's Handbook (http://hnsa.org/doc/uboat/index.htm#par250)you wont find me doing it in the game.

90% difficulty (gotta have those beautiful outside views when on those long crusies sence you cant move around the decks.);)
Manual Targeting, Ive gotten so good at this stuff, all I gotta do is look at the target, and once it gets at a certan position infornt of the boat if fire my eels.;)
Did (thank god my sub hasent been sunk.):D
I challenge myself to sink over 20,000 tons no matter what in eatch patrol, less is no excuse, I have even Harbor raided to make this goal.;)

It takes about 10-12 minutes :-? to load a career save from the time I click on the SH3Commander icon till the control room comes bouncing onto my screen.
Unfortuneately, I can't leave it on between sessions, so I have to save after my session and turn the computer off. It sucks, but that is the way it goes. :sunny:
I try to get as much play time as possible during the week. Usually after work for an hour or so before I pick up the little angels ;) from school and sometimes for a short time after until mama comes home depending on whether the kids have homework or not.
Ahhhh, but on Friday nights, that is my uninterrupted play time. I go 4-5 hours straight, uninterrupted by husband/father duties with the faithful hound curled at my feet and usually slide into bed at about 2am. Pure bliss! :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:
I try to play as much as possible without saving/exiting the game. If I'm not able to leave the computer on, with the game minimized, I save under controlled conditions to prevent CTDs (away form land and any ship).
I don't have the issue with the long load times, at least not as reported here. It takes around 3 minutes to load a saved game (GWX of course).
As for the realism, I play at 79%, which probably doesn't do justice to my style of gameplay.
- External camera is on, for screenshots and eyecandy only. I never use it to achieve tactical advantage.
- I use periscope stabilizer, as I believe that the real periscopes also had some kind of stabilization, otherwise they would be utterly useless.
- Weapon officer assistance is on, but only for target ID. Never use it for getting the solution.
- Map updates are also on, although it doesn't have any impact on realism %. Still, I'm planning to start playing without it.
Do I play DiD? I don't know... I'll let you know when I die :rotfl:.

Its nice to hear all of you chime in, Let me say that I recently married. 3 months ago this week, and she has been great about it, and we actually have a schedule of things to do that keeps us busy, Ex: Monday nites, walking or biking, Tuesday, quiet time reading, writing, etc, but like you said Sharkbit come Friday night, we'll usually watch a movie together, then spend some time together and off she goes to bed.
The lights in the office go out the surround sound goes low, I have a candle lit so I can see the keyboard, then I'll play til I cant see straight. Sometimes she'll fall asleep on the couch in the office while I play.
I never want her to think the game is Meuy Importante to her, but it is here I unwind from the day, week, whatever.
I keep my game on, and minimize the screen to allow other uses, but the game is now always there ready to go.
I noticed that when I load the single missions that are part of GWX, they take 20 minutes each time, and when in career I try to transfer to kiel, it won't load at all.

Behind every successful Kaleun you'll find a good women waiting for him on his return from patrol.

Have you made her watch "Das Boot" yet?:D
My apartment has terrible natural lighting so if I'm playing on an overcast day or in the evening I always leave one light on to avoid eye strain.
It takes, on average, 3-5 minutes for GWX to load. I used to play for 4-5 hours at a stretch but I started to develop a "crick" in my neck from being hunched over the keyboard for so long (& a sore bum too). So I decided to limit myself to 1 to 1 & 1/2 hour sessions; unless I run into a single contact or convoy. If that happens I'll play out the combat event and then try to surface somewhere safely away from aircraft, land or ships and save the game. It still p*sses me off that you have to do this as it can be really inconvenient at times but that's a rant for another day...

Yep, I have but its the regular release.
I should make her watch the newer Director's Cut, I heard its like 5 hours long.
I was looking at the backlit keyboards on ebay, about $20.00 for a decent blue lit logitech. Not too bad.
For those nites when she's on the couch I just need to tell her, "I got it for you darliing, I got you a nitelite, I think it will work don't you?

If you really want to torture her; make her watch it without the English subtitles...:D

LOL
That and then maybe the next day, a Band of Brother's Marathon!
I think I would have plenty of alone time to play, since at that point she would be at her mothers!

With a beard :p Never does grow very long...I guess I could run patrols at 1x :hmm:
Usually when I play it's in sessions of a few hours. Probably 2 or 3 nights a week. Lights out, sound turned up. I used to have a little USB LED light that aimed right at my keyboard but didn't ruin the darkness. But then it burned out. Then the replacement burned out. So now I have to go to the map or some other bright screen when I really need to see my keyboard. Oh well.
Also, I usually use an incremental difficulty enhancer. It's called "beer". Amazing stuff. The more you have, the more you notice Bernard slowly taking over command of your boat.
It's on a sliding scale or something.
It is a good game for drinking beer, though, since it involves a lot of mellow cruising. At least until you have to do something serious, like run from a pack of angry destroyers or plot intercept courses. Then you wish you'd stopped at beer #4. But until then, it's great.
So yeah, that's how I play. Late at night, with the sound up and a good buzz on for a few hours.
Also, I play at 82%
I use map contact updates and I couldn't live without the weapons officer. He's usually sober.

94 or 84% realism, it takes around 30 minutes for the game to load. :damn:
I save every 2 days of game time, more often if not traversing a big pile of nothing
I don't play that much and not daily either, I have to split my gaming time with racing sims, you know (for the moment it's Race 07 and immortal Richard Burns Rally with online plugin).

80% realism, first GWX career
safely saving (no ships near my sub) before/after my offensive actions and making sacrificial rituals  when I am forced to load on-patrol savegame, because I had several bad experiences with corrupted savegames, so my SH3 is turned off after finished patrol only ;) .
