View Full Version : Double target attack video tutorial
Hello everyone,
After more than 10 months of playing SH IV and still enjoying it, I wanted to give something back to the community from which I learned so much.
So I have made a video tutorial explaining how to perform a double target attack using manual targeting, that is attacking and hopefully sinking, two ships in a single round.
This is an advanced tutorial, you must be able to perform a single target attack using manual targeting, if that is not the case I recommend to watch WenerSobe excellent tutorials on the subject first (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=897224&postcount=167)
This tutorial was made using SHIV 1.4 + an old version of RAW + 360 degree bearing plotter; no other mods were used, but this technique should work with any configuration as soon as you use USA subs. I hear Uboats are a completely different story, I'll soon see myself.
It takes time to master this technique, so practice and waste a few torpedoes, don't worry they come cheap this days
Here is the link to the YouTube version, make sure you click the "watch in high quality" link just under the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnOsBxVi84U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnOsBxVi84U)
The quality of the YouTube one is pretty decent but if you must see a better and bigger one, and keep it in your computer for later reference here is the download-able version http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TOMEP0GI
Or you can download it from filefront

Comments, corrections and suggestions welcome
Hope some of you find it useful

That's very nice Tale . Quite the professional video. I always like to try to get the torps to hit a far column first, then a closer column, to give the impression I've attacked from the other side. I don't think the AI takes any notice of it though :D.

Very nice and well produced. I would say most people could look at the video and take two ships out. One unfortunate aspect of SH4 is that multiple torpedo hits at the same place on the target do not result in measurably more damage, so shooting three is no better than shooting two per target. You shoot two not to do more damage, but to increase the odds of getting a hit.
Perhaps the new RFB target damage mod will fix that!
For more information on inputting target course instead of AoB into the TDC see WernerSobe's two videos on manual targeting. I think the second one has the details on this wrinkle.
WernerSobe basic TDC video tutorial (http://files.filefront.com/SH4+Basic+TDC+Tutorial+Wewmv/;8894792;/fileinfo.html)
WernerSobe Advanced TDC tutorial (http://files.filefront.com/SH4+Complete+Setup+and+Atewmv/;8894549;/fileinfo.html)
Now EVERYONE should be able to do this successfully! Great job!http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/drawsmiley.gif
Thanks guys, I'm glad you liked the video. I hope it will help some captains out there who can already manually sink one merchant at a time, but have to spend half a day doing the "end around" for a second attack.
I was thinking of doing a follow up video showing the technique applied to two merchants in different lanes and, the really difficult one, using the active sonar when there's no visual contact (fog, pitch black night, damaged periscope, etc.) This last case only useful when there are no escort around.
What do you think?

I have also plans for tutorial video driven by the thought that i should give something back to the commynity.
So what "tools" should i use to get decent results? Mainly i'm missing the gameplay capturing software. I quess i can do the rest with windows moviemaker?

Fraps is awesome and cheap. Just produces HUGE avi files, so make sure you have disk space available.

What I have used for this video is:
-Fraps.- for capturing in game footage, commercial but cheap (http://www.fraps.com)
-Sony Vegas.- for video editing, much better than movie maker but harder to use; commercial and expensive depending on the version (Sony Vegas (http://http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp))
-Audacity.- for audio capturing and editing, free (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net))
-Gimp.- for image editing, free (http://www.gimp.org)
By the way I have edited the first post to add a link to the download version in filefront for those with problems with megaupload

I'm playing with xfire and it also takes great but humongous movies. I'm continuing to check it out to see if its options allow me to cut down on movie size. Xfire is free and has a lot of potential if I can get more space or minimize the space it uses.
I just purchased a 500 gig Seagate drive for 49.95, so once I get some SATA power adapters I really won't have to worry that much about initial movie size. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/winky.gif I sure can't post a 20 gig movie though!
There's a new video tutorial about the double attack technique, find the details in the Video Tutorals: TDC + PK advanced (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923&page=10) thread

Yeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaw! I am looking forward to this one! Great job!
Just in case anyone is interested, the high quality version of the second video is available in filefront, check the Video Tutorials thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923&page=10)
ummm, shouldn't the horizontal line of your scope be at the waterline of the target ship when you take a range reading?
how can you measure the height of a ship accurately if you are including area that has no ship in it?
this is not the first video i've seen this being done in.
yes i know.. that of the 3 pieces of data (range, speed, course).. the TRUE range is the least important when you have the TDC determine course for you (and you also fire with small gyro angles).. but it's very important if you are plotting the points on the map yourself to determine the course. but i guess if you never move your scope vertically, you are measuring with the same amount of error at each reading and it doesn't really matter. so long as you remember that the line you see on the map is most likely closer to you than the actual ship.

For some reason, the filefront link just takes you to the filefront home page. Is this link broken or am I doing something wrong?
You are right Tim Konuch, it seems the file has been deleted in filefront; I'll upload it again and update the links. This filefront page is a short term storage for sure
The megaupload link is still live, try that one if you can, and of course you can always watch it in youtube
Sorry for the inconvenience
