Sorry if this little boast annoys anyone but I just had my luckiest patrol yet!

165,958 BRT (http://www.geocities.com/onelifecrisis/Kurt_Moller/Log_0.html) :rock:

The escorts around Cape Town don't seem very well equipped/experienced (yet). They have hedgehogs (I think that's what they're called... it fires a sort of "ring of depth charges" on the event camera) but their ASDIC was not up to the job of finding me.

Wow,all that in '43:oas well as them having hedgehogs which are usually fatal,that is an amazing patrol:up:I must admit I don't usually go that far down the map as when I do I don't find much worthy of all the effort:nope:but looking at that result I might be persuaded to give it another go;)

I only went down there because that's where BDU sent me. I've never been that way before. I had only just enough fuel to make it there, shoot some stuff, and head home. Fortunately I found plenty to shoot. :)

Not bad :D.

I think I'll take a look around Cape Town. I guess most of those ships were in convoy, not traveling alone?

Quite a few small convoys with only 1 or 2 escorts.
The rest were in heavily escorted large convoys.

They do now, Steve!!!
I, as Kurt, just set sail on my second patrol.
BDU sent me to patrol shallow (and probably mined) waters just off the east coast of Britain. :damn: :shifty:
But en-route I met a convoy in thick fog. I infiltrated behind the lead escort and waited for the first ships to appear.
Here's an event-camera shot from after the attack:

I missed getting my first 100k patrol by 5k :nope::damn::oops:

I actually did get a torpedo hit on a Large Merchant, but I didn't stick around for him to sink. Last I saw he wasn't even listing, and it had been a good while.

I did get 2 CL's though, as well as a bunch of other 10k+ merchants.

Aye, my secret weapon... [heavy echo and bass]THE EVENT CAMERA![/heavy echo and bass] :rotfl:

Seriously though, this is not skill, it's just incredible luck! I literally jumped out of my seat and danced a victory dance when she went down. These mid-war troopships are just insane! 40k for one ship!? There are entire convoys with less tonnage in them than that!

P.S. Wish me luck in AN56 (gulp :-?)

Never admit that! It's skill, all right! :D And the Event camera, of course. :rotfl:

P.S. Wish me luck in AN56 (gulp :-?) Good luck! Although I would avoid going there. I developed an allergy to the places without at least 200 meters of water below my keel.

Thanks! And I agree about having 200m minimum. :-?
I plan to go to AN56, patrol for exactly 24 hours, then go home. If I see lone merchants I will sink them, but convoys I'm not touching.

In Kurt's second patrol (http://www.geocities.com/onelifecrisis/Kurt_Moller/Log_1.html) I only sank 9 ships... and the tonnage? 166K! :o
In the first patrol I thought I was lucky to find those two large troopships, but in the second patrol there were convoys and task forces everywhere and it seemed like they all had monster ships in them.
Is this "normal" in 1943? :hmm:

Remember Mate.
We have the option of starting a new Game.
We learn from past failures and start over.
So we get better at what we do!

The Scripts for GWX are the best that could be done!!

I've seen none better!

If you wanted real?
What would you think if UBI made the game so that when you died,
you could NEVER install or play again?
Would you still buy the game?

I've suggested something similar in the past. Not a permanent ban, but that you would play much more realistically if when you died you put it away for say, a year. That would probably be extreme enough for the most hardcore do-or-die-ers.

What if they just made sure that a career ending in death would wipe all the saved games, so you couldn't ever play that career again? That would keep people on their toes.:sunny:

On my last patrol (NW of Ireland, december 1934) I managed to tear out a large troop ship out of a convoy, got hunted for a long time, raised periscope when the escort was gone and lo and behold: a lone Aquitania, stationary and listing, right where the convoy had passed before. :rock:
This was my second Aquitania in this career, the first one I sank off Gibraltar 1942-ish.

I am a bit curious which mods are you using?

I had GWX2.1 and the ships I got are much smaller than yours.
Large troop ship: I got: around 16000 GRT, you got: 30100 GRT
Large Merchant: I got: around 6000-8000 GRT, you got: 12000 GRT
Modern Tanker: I got: around 8800 GRT, you got: 11000 GRT

Is the SH3/GWX I have missing somthing?

BTW, a similarily good place to hunt is off the coast of Australia, (I am now based in rabaul after a 60 day voyage from the Atlantic on my new XXI) the best spot is the Island north of Brisbane. Lots of Medium convoys consisting of big ships escorted by 2 DDs. Deep water too.

I think olc is playing with NYGM atm. Thats a whole new ballgame compared to gwx. Much more tougher with less eyecandies. What handicaps me most is that the lookouts of merchants are better skilled then anyone from the warships.

No, I'm still playing GWX.
All the careers in my sig are GWX 2.1 + OLCU patrols.
Large Troop Ship is listed as ~30k in my GWX 2.1 recognition manual.
Large Merchant is ~10k IIRC.
I have SH3C randomising my tonnage - it usually seems to vary it by about +/-1k compared to what's in the recognition manual.

GWX 2.1

Class=Periscope display=tonnage

PPL=Large Troop Ship=24000
NPTB=Small Ocean Liner=5760
LUS=HMT Aquitania=44000
CHT=Chatham-type Troop Ship=5649
NLOL=Ceramic-type Ocean Liner=14000

I checked the Large Merchant. It's 10,320 (without SH3C randomisation).
BBW, I concur with the Large Troop Ship tonnage you posted (24000) so does this mean SH3C has "randomised" a whole extra 4k? :o

Maybe it randomise by percentage...

By the way, what else does this OCLU mod do? I am considering whether to install it.

I just took a peek in the SH3C random tonnage file. If I'm reading it right, then it can add up to 15% to the tonnage, plus another 2% per year. I'm in 1943, so that would be a maximum of 23%.

24,000*1.23=29,520
Close, but no cigar.
Maybe the 2% is compounded, or whatever it's called? Or maybe I'm reading the SH3C config file wrong...

By the way, what else does this OCLU mod do? I am considering whether to install it.

Over 30k tons in a troop transport ship and it might sink on it's own. :lol:
