View Full Version : Too Many Planes

I have mentioned this before, and was suggested I use RSRD which is very good BUT, too few ships are to be found. Has anyone reduced the numbers of aircraft (the japs must have approx 10million flying planes) without having to install RSRD?
Another bug just discovered. Riding the surf en route to China Sea from Pearl, I was being attacked by an invisible jap ship, circa 1941 second patrol of my GATO, USS Drum. Nothing on the sea, in the air or on the map!!!

Ah, one other thing ;)
When a sub arrives home it auto fills with Mk14 torps. Would it not be better to have an empty sub so that, later on, I can load Mk23's without having to remove all the Mk14's first. Its a pain in the proverbials.

back on track and topic: the planes download does not work. From Midway to a point about 400 miles west, I have encountered approx 65 Jap planes!!!! I feel like starting again! I loaded the file into data/cfg

Hey with that poetic effort ( just seeing it now ) I gotta help you out :)
I am wondering if you missed a step with the mod installation. Did you use JSGME
( Mod Enabler )? If not you should, it will make your life much easier. There is a link to it in the thread below my sig. It is from SH3 Forums but that does not matter, it works with SH3\4 and other games for that matter. There is also a nice guide on how to use it below my sig as well :yep:
Here is another mod regarding the planes:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=131709
But that first one I sent should work if installed properly.

You know, I'll bet the real skippers complained about too many planes too. But they didn't have the option of nerfing the enemy with a fortuitous mod to wussify their environment.
Yes, it's possible with RSRD to circumnavigate the Philippine Islands in late 1941, when they were under almost complete control of the Japanese without encountering a single airplane. Considering that on your way out to sea you just watched a movie about how the British moved their battleships out to interdict the Japanese invasion of Singapore and they were promptly sunk by swarming Japanese aircraft, how are you to defend such a thing? I doubt that a submarine could remain surfaced for more than an hour in that vicinity at that time. I've been on the surface continuously for four days except for sonar sweeps!
Fact: the air was FULL of unopposed Japanese aircraft.
Fact: they sank many valuable American and British naval ships, including some submarines. These included ships that could well defend themselves.
Fact: you complain that the game reflects that reality.
Have you considered that time compression makes the frequency of air attacks seem many times more frequent than they are? Have you actually logged times of air attacks in 12 hours in the game and compared them with WWII sub logs made at the same time in the war and in similar waters?
The issue isn't whether you can or can not choose to play the game any way you want. Of course you can. You can download my slightly subnuclear Mark 14 and incinerate any ship in the game with a hit to the rudder (it's a lot of fun!), but don't make claims of "too many airplanes" and "too few ships" without doing the extensive research on planes that the developers did or the incredible research on Japanese shipping that Lurker did. Go make the claim of not enough Japanese ships the RSRD thread and see how Lurker will drop reams of evidence on top of you. I dare you! As a matter of fact, it would be a fun discussion and I urge you to do exactly that. I'll bet you will learn a lot in a hurry. And so will a lot of other people who would never ask the question, so you would be helping lots of people.
Learning is one of the valuable things that happen when you choose play a simulation over an arcade game.:yep:

The only time skippers would have seen many planes would be when in empire waters, I would imagine. Further afield planes would sortie from island airstrips but doubt if they would have been as frequent as I have seen in SH4. They would not have had that many planes nor fuel. Also, planes heading outward on patrol at dusk would hardly be there, being unable to patrol at night as such.
NB: thanks again poet. Mod installed now to try it before I head out for night shift!

I love RSRD and consider it a must have but I do miss the lack of aircraft. The stock game probably over did it but like RR, I'm riding around Rabul in mid 42 on the surface and not a single aircraft. I have went four patrols before and not seen a single plane. Maybe in the future, we can get an RSRD patch to add some of the aircraft back. :yep:
I guess I'm one who doesn't mind the planes. Some days they are heavy other days there aren't any. For me they add to the fun & sometimes the frustration of my patrols which is as it should be.
BTW - most of the time the aircraft just west of Midway are 'our boys' ... so don't shoot... lol

Not only do they have individual realistic ranges for each type of aircraft, but in the game they don't materialize out of nowhere. They come from a base or aircraft carrier within that range of operations.
Hey! How do you know what kind of airplanes they are? Something drastically wrong there!
http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/hypnoquestion.gif OK, look deep into the mysterious hypno-question mark. Repeat after me...
"I will not look at airplanes" ...come on, you can do it!
"I will not identify airplanes"
"When one is spotted I will immediately dive to periscope depth or below"
"It does not matter what kind of airplane they are"
"Airplanes are all evil"
"I will not look. I will not identify airplanes."
OK, you may now wake up, completely alert and refreshed. Don't you feel much better? Yes you do! And now because you are not lollygagging around identifying them, airplanes not identify you. And they will not call their friends.
You have just reduced your air traffic by a factor of five to ten. http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/apple2.gifhttp://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/Partay.gifhttp://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/c_band2.gifhttp://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa293/RockinRobbins13/smileys/grouphugg.gif

If you were seeing Zeroes just west of Midway, that means the Midway invasion is underway! GO FIND THOSE CARRIERS!
Of course, the IJN has an airbase on Wake Island, and if you get too close to it you might encounter patrols from there.

OK, stock game. No mods yet, tho' I'll prolly try RFB (RUB is great fun in SH3).
Dick spots plane.
Dive, Dick, dive!
See Dick at 150'. Dick is safe here - even sharp eyed Japanese observer with 16x glasses can't see Dick so deep.
Dick surfaces. 'Nother plane!
Dick travels underwater in day. Surface at night...ahhh, much better. Fewer headaches.
Better to cruise on surface, with scope up. See more, hunt more, bring enemy to bad end more. But if pesky airmen are feeling their oats that day, travel underwater in underwater travelling boat.
P.S. - do not slug it out with nefarious airmen unless you have absolutly no choice, as in "can't dive" or "too shallow" (why am I in shallow water????).

Kiwi, that was a conscious decision by the devs not to allow that in SH4. You have to locate that plane visually all by yourself. This helps make diving into the default action when visually spotting a plane. It also makes radar your best friend.

Its the best thing to do really. But I do like the air layer in RSRDC and the one in TMO "evil airplanes". Both are eons ahead of the stock layer that shipped with SH4.

Oh yes I forgot the shallows, there are some transits that take two days in 80 feet of water, Yikes! Sometimes I just use the fuel and take the long way around. If its a 12 hour transit I just heave too decks awash at 1 knot wait for night and go flank on the surface. That Pacific is one big ocean.
