View Full Version : European Air War - Can I play it on WinXP?
Like the title says. I'd love to give this old gal a ride after all these years, but it seems it isnt compatible with WinXP/newer graphics drivers.
Is there any fix any of you know to get around this? Compatibility modes wont work (like in 99.9999% of cases) and I really dont want to go and install those (IIRC) 66.xx nvidia drivers just to play one game.
I can run EAW in Windows XP fine, but it has to be on an ATI card. NVidias give the dreaded 7127 error with the latest drivers.

Hope that helps
Aye, it's the fracking 7127 error I'm getting. So, seems like I'm screwed... AFAIK, the 66.93 drivers wont even work on series 8 Nvidia cards. :damn:
Things have come to a point nowadays that it is worth saving an older computer for playing some great games that are getting more and more problems to work with XP, Vista and newest hardware :hmm:
I miss playing Panzer Commander (Will not work in XP), EAW (Will not work with modern NVidias and ATIS do not render horizon clouds) and some others :damn:

Hitman:
Starting with ATI driver 10-07, ground/distance fog is now enabled on all sorts of older games and EAW is one of them. :D Try upgrading your ATI drivers and see the differance.
Good news for all EAW users!:yeah:
With the latest patch release, the 7127 error problem has been fixed and EAW can be played on modern systems.

[EDIT]
Panama, I had missed your message, sorry! I have a modern NVidia, not an ATI. I have an ATI on my laptop and used it to check EAW, but it's not a good system to play that kind of game.

Cheap - and better - alternative to EAW and IL2 is to get a copy of BoB2 and the latest patch! My new benchmark sim for WWII.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTT!!!!!!
@Skybird
True, but EAW has that something in it I always loved. :yep:
I also have BoB, it is a GREAT sim, and the "strategic" campaign aspect is truly inmersive. But as Dowly says, for entirely subjective and personal reasons there are times when you get in love with a sim, and in that sense EAW always got my heart.
I've fired up B17 Mighty Eighth recently. Wish they made a third.

Interesting. I've been itching to get back into both EAW and F4.0 for awhile now but was afraid I wouldn't be able to get either to work on my PC with Vista 64.
I'm in the same boat as Hitman and Dowley. For whatever reason, EAW just struck me as one of the more enjoyable WW2 flight sims out there. I really miss my Bf-109 Gustav and some of the fun I had taking on B-17 and B-24 bomber formations.
Another game that I miss, though I have no idea if anyone's updated or not (since it relied on a 3DFX card) was Longbow. Excellent gameplay, loads of fun single or multiplayer, and a dynamic campaign to boot.

Longbow currently gets the full treatment.

By style it owes to the old Microprose and Jane's sims, but is a complete new developement from scratch.
I am really waiting for this one.
I have run Longbow II under XP reliably, though currently it is no longer installed. A favourite title! However I read somewhere that under Vista and/or W7 it is extremely difficult or impossible to get it running, and that people have stopped trying to figure it out.
