He walked in to an college exam, shot at the 20 people there and set the class on fire. He then fired others in the school, atlest 9 dead and numerous wounded at this time.

Sad thing. I really hope this won't become a tradition. Such a small nation doesn't really need any more of these.

RIP for those who lost their lives, and my condolences for the families who lost their love ones.
If I recall, there was also bullying in Jokela...it does not stop at school though.

Foxtrot,
true. Also I've heard from some friends of mine who are teachers in elementary schools that there is more violence etc. in schools, also aimed against teachers. Maybe there needs to be more discussion in Finland about these things, how to make schools and other workplaces more safer etc.

Finland is a different society compare to ours. Never ask for help. Never say how you feel. Never complain. Don't admit you need other people (it's seen as weakness there). Never say "excuse me" if you need a way. Small talk with a stranger on street is forbidden. etc.
Last thing: A guy with loose screw will always get a gun. No law, no legislation, no paragraph, no line, nothing in this world can stop him.

Im not sure if this holds true in Finland, but in estonia smalltalk with strangers on the street is acceptable if one or both parties are drunk.

Finlandssvensk, she propably isnt like that.:) I wouldnt mind one myself, they know how to enjoy life. I dont know what is behind this culture but i think its comes from the extreme weather, poverty and hard wars during the past 700-1000 years.
We have been wealthy only some 30 years of that period.

Theres 10 dead now plus the shooter, he burned some bodies with the molotov coctails he tried to burn the school with.
These loonies are living in a virtual reality but the media calls for ministers to resign and banning guns.

People here have a lot of expectations from themself and others, some cant take the pressure, came first to mind. We should look this very deeply, how our local culture has mixed with the western media culture people see in TV and that sort of thing.
Those are just some ideas.

Thats couse they are stupid.;)
Nothing is going to be solved by throwing our hands in the air and boiling it
down to "there just stupid!" or other such rot.
The problem is minute by percentage of the population measurements
compared to other hazards, but it is one that the public show particular
concern for.
More drastic mental health checking, firearms searches and other obvious
quick-fix solutions may reduce the risk, but will never eliminate it. What they
will do for sure is cost money and perhaps restrict civil liberties.
It seams that in this case a more rigorous application of the current laws
and procedures may have helped reduce the risk weeks before and (without
having a good knowledge of Finnish law) I would expect that that is the wisest
course to follow in the short term.
Longer term social and wide-ranging legal change is another, far more
complex, matter.

Sometimes this happens..because people are bullied so much they can't take it anymore. They feel like fighting back, bringing a weapon..which is a big no no. And it is true, sometimes telling a teacher is not enough and you will still be bullied.
Same for me, I am bullied because I am deaf in my right ear and hard of hearing in the left. But I deal with it, I have a bunch of friends, and a bunch of *******s that no one likes. They think that me/others being deaf is funny, so might as well punch n kick me until blood comes out or call me a couple of more names. Yep, been dealing with it for half of my life, it's been pathetic, but still I haven't brought a weapon to school and blasted someone.

Also been teased my entire school carear, ever sence kindergarden.:shifty: Lots of jerks:down:

I was teased a lot when I was a kid. I got the crap beaten out of me a few times a week. I felt totally alone and none of the adults could/would help out.
I wanted, more than anything to kill the small gang of punks that seemed determined to ruin my day. I used to daydream in class about all the horrible ways I would torture and kill the punks.
But it never occurred to me to bring a weapon to school and hurt someone.
Even if I had access to a weapon, I don't honestly think I would ever take it to school and hurt someone with it. Mostly because I knew that my parents would kill me, revive me, and kill me again if they even thought I was considering this. But also because it simply "wasn't done" in those days.
That is what is missing today. Teasing has been a part of school for as long as there has been schools. Picked-on kids have been fantasizing about killing bullies since the second day after school was invented. Nothing has changed. Kids are not being teased any more or less than I was.
But some of the kids these days feel it necessary to get a weapon and hurt someone.
So what is it about kids today that allows them to make that decision that I (and I imagine I am not the only one) would never consider doing under similar circumstances?
That's what confuses me.

I have access to plenty of weapons as far as that goes, plenty of ammo to them as well. I didn't feel the need to kill them, just put them on their knees and have them notice what it feels like to be us. I HAVE fought back, taking "Karate" known as Martial Arts; no one messed around with me anymore except the real dumb ones. But, there are even real short kids in highschool, they can barely defend themselves. One of them got in a fight (self defense) and he was still punished, being suspended for 5 days even when he defended himself. The bully got an even shorter suspension. Pfft.

Ya know, Ive never seen a teacher do anything to a kid, they just ignore it and dont report it, My parents have to go to school, and then the school usualy dosent care. I dont do anything back ither, just take it. Ive been verbably abused by kids, had chairs pulled from under me, cornered, shoved, punched, ganged up on, jumped and choaked, lied on, ect.:shifty: And the school dosent care. Im kind of like a tall punching bag.

Oah yea, I dont have any friends in the neigbor hood anymore. The kids next door told lies and trashed my name and backyard/pool had to be taked down because they kept throwing trash in it and ruining the water. I once got in a fight with the older one, He threw me on to a dresser and hit my wrist untill the mussel in it was bruised, had to wear a bandage for a week. But I also kicked his A** and knocked him to the floor crying.:-?

People, especially kids, can be so horrible sometimes, it isn't a wonder that these things happen.:nope:
Since such complex social-development issues contribute to these peoples problems they would be almost impossible to address, imo.
The only solution I could see would be to train teachers and equip them with firearms, or maybe have a well-trained and armed security force in at-risk schools.
At best, it will act as a deterrant, and at worst, it will limit the damage.

I don't really see it that way. A lot of the same dynamics that are in human society are just as prevalent in animals, if not more so. Animals wage horrible wars, take slaves, rape, murder each other, bully loners, cannibalize, and even destroy the environment.
Human intellect is a survival mechanism produced by evolution, and that is what it will be, firstly and foremostly, for the forseeable future. People act little better than animals when resources are scarce, or they feel threatened. They just find more creative ways to do it most of the time.
The general concept of "humanity" was only brought about with the inception of civilization, as people found they could benefit more by trading resources and co-operating. Admittedly, it did exsist before that, but only on small and non-recorded scales.
Humanity's purposes are therefore best served by mutual co-operation, voluntary exchange, and even freedom. Power is a resource as well, after all. So is social standing.
As much as we might like to think so, we aren't so different from other animal species. We're only human, after all;)
