View Full Version : Trip with UC3 Nautilus
She can sail on her own now. We expect her to be able to dive in 2-3 months :D

Coming along really nicely....looking forward to seeing her in 2009 http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif
I really look for seing how fast she will be able to dive...Peter made the holes in the bottom for the water intake app 3 feet wide!
You can see the main ballast tank valves in the video... 1 in the bow and 1 in the stern.
Peter told me will be able to sink VERY fast :D

I'd be more interested in how quickly she can surface

Agreed! Submerging is the easy part, surfacing well that is another story...:D
Awesome!
I am wondering how much the building has cost ?
Here is another one:

Cool,:D Could you make one while diveing/underwater/surfaceing.:D
Cool,:D Could you make one while diveing/underwater/surfaceing.:DWhen she is ready to dive I will certanly do one :D

When it's ready for a test dive take her way out to sea, preferably where there's a deep trench, then do a crash dive!!
Just kidding, hope it all goes well!
Think of all the cocaine you could successfully haul in that thing versus the submersible jalopies the current runners are using.
She's certainly motoring along - what sort of speeds are you getting?

I just added a Video of Kraka too :)

Great vedios, beautiful tell us her underwater speed once you can get her to dive.;)

How many subs do you all have now?:D Also, You have nice subs, You got your own fleet now.:rotfl:
The underwater speed will be max app. 7-8 knots.
Actually we do not have any sub right now that can dive. Freya has been decommissioned for a few months not. Kraka has a broken exhaust system, that can be repaired, but we will rather put our time into getting Nautilus ready to dive. Kraka will soon be decommissioned as well - it takes allot of time to have a sub operational! :)

nice video! I forget. What's the deepest the Kraka has actually dived? The kraka has just sailed in the harbor? What's the longest "patrol" time?

What do you propose to do with the Kraka reactor :hmm:
Fantastic, I can't believe how cheap (not incl. labor) it was to build at this point. What's the battery life underwater at best speed for range? What is the optimal underwater cruise speed estimated at?

She has acutlly sailed quite some distance in Danish standards, so she IS oceangoing - its just not that pleasent.
Fantastic, I can't believe how cheap (not incl. labor) it was to build at this point. What's the battery life underwater at best speed for range? What is the optimal underwater cruise speed estimated at?If we dive at snorkel depth we can sail 8-9 knots for as long as there is fuel.
If we use the electric motor we can sail for 1 hr at full speed or 5 hrs at optimal speed.
We dont know for sure yet, what those speed are because we have not used the electric engine yet.
That's a lot more than I expected. Very cool stuff.
The 8-9 knots if full throttle and NOT very economic...best speed is around 5 knots.

Remember....fuel economy in this day and age is important

And this is with the normally aspirated engines right? I'm also curious what the electric motor speeds are. That's why I was surprised, I was expecting like 3 kts :D

Sorry to drag up this old post, but I just found out about this. Have there been any new developments? How sweet would it be to replace the diesel engines and fuel system with a hydrogen/oxygen fuel cell system? That way the sub could be run on the electric motors all the time. The deck could even be lined with solar cells for surface cruising. If they have a spare hull lying around, I'd be awfully interested in tinkering with it!

Don't know if there will be much more development on UC-3, as the team is currently working on a privately-funded space program.

Good grief, nothing like pushing yourself a bit, eh? Building submarines for a laugh, and then moving on to your own space program! We should stay tuned and see what they end up on next.
