Ok, there are obviously good reasons behind this, but I'm keeping them secret, for now

http://www.myspace.com/subsim (http://www.myspace.com/subsim)

If you use the MySpace thingee, add me as a friend. I guarantee it will make your holidays warmer and inhibit unsightly body hair.

thanks

Myspace? Is that related to the foul atrocity that is Facebewk?

Do I need to go into a blind rampage again?

Done, to avoid using my surname I have registered as Reece Subsim, is this ok to you Neal, can change if you prefer it, have never joined these type of sites so a little worried about my surname being advertised for all to see, I thought this more appropriate anyway.:yep:
Cheers.

A search for Reece Subsim doesn't find you mate, must take a while for their search engine to update.

Btw, why are you "bummed"?

I change that mood thing all the time. At the time, I happened to be feeling bummed because I was stuck home, no friends were around, the wife had gone off to visit her family and I was bored of everything in the apartment AND I didn't have a car to drive out anywhere. Sometimes that mood Icon will change hourly with me. :D

Very cool, thanks guys! I will not ptobably use MyFace that much, you can always e-mail me or ping me here, but it helps to be on other networks. Now, where are all the women?

Lesrae, you can add me to your "subsim" facebook group, can't you?

cheers
Neal

Yeah, I didn't sign up for MySpace before, because I have Subsim as a networking tool. I remember GeoCities, the forerunner to My Space and Facebook... does anyone remember anything before GeoCities?? :hmm:

Yeh BBS's like Fidonet etc. Web 2.0 is just web 0.1 reskinned.

A lot of people have forgotten that back as far as the miod 1980's Fidonet and other dialup BBS platforms had things like forums, real time chat, online interactive games amongst other "new" features of Web 2.0. the difference is in the ability to access them and their popularity.

I'm just the opposite. I'm only on Myspace (I found Facebook and the other sites WAY too clunky to work with) and I'm on that site several times a day. If you're interested in music and bands that are impossible to find in reccord stores, or even online, Myspace is a GREAT resourse (As well as Pandora.com). I have a HUGE list of interesting bands. Myspace is how I keep track of them all (releases, tour dates, etc..)

As far as the "social" networking sites go, well i'm an unsociable sod and don't see anything there that interests me at all.

Sure, I'd hidden it after the initial playing around with it, but I've opened it up so anyone can join - just search for subsim and it should show up now.

Which conclusively proves that Oberon lacks "real" friends

(...yes, that will be in the next issue of Pravda)

Anyway, what do you people do in Facebook anyway? I couldn't find a single usable purpose for it

To quote one of my (real and facebook) friends from the other thread on facebook, who put it better than I could:

Virtual friend blah de blah: It depends on the individual - personally, I use it to keep in touch with my real-world friends - I don't think I have more than a couple of friends on there who I don't know in real life. I know Lesrae in real life and, like me, he uses it to keep track of a scattered, disparate array of very good old friends.

Identity theft blah de blah: Like all technology, if you don't know how to use it, it can be dangerous. When you sign up, you can decide levels of privacy for all manner of things, to the extent that only your friends would be aware you'd even signed up. If you don't take the time to configure those things to your liking then no; they won't be configured to your liking. Despite all the security threats associated with going online at all, you still do, because you take the time to address those issues.

Generic religious fear: You're on your own with that.

A good friend of mine once told me he sometimes wishes that there was a bit of the net left for us geeks; somewhere that wasn't over-crowded with the general populous. Facebook isn't that, and that's what makes it so ubiquitous - I want to see my friends' photos, know how their kids are getting along, keep in touch with people I don't see so regularly, etc - what better way?
