And where are you, with this quite bothersome fellow now?

I'm south-west of Ireland. I've spent 3.5 hours of game time being depth charged. There were two of them at first, now there's one left and he seems to have an unlimited supply of DC's.

If I make it through this patrol I'm going to "buy" a type 7! This type 9 is becoming a liability...

nirwana
09-20-08, 01:12 PM
bah 3.5 hrs is nothing i spent usually 12hrs+ at this depth running 2/3rd to make them throwing wabos til they give up.

onelifecrisis
09-20-08, 01:14 PM
Well yeah, running at 1/3 (I assume you meant 1/3) will do that

Posting here seems to have brought me luck - I finally give him the slip. He's still DCing  but a good distance behind me now. The pings are getting very quiet...

BTW I have TC set to 1 for "being hunted" in SH3C, so I prefer to slip away when I can!

nirwana
09-20-08, 01:17 PM
Excellent but still be carefully the damned DDs will cut engine and quit waboing at some point and listening for ure presence and if u still too close it will detect u again.

Im focussing now on a raid in a blizzrad check back later

onelifecrisis
09-20-08, 02:01 PM
Well you were spot on - the DD found me again.

Now it's finally run out of DC's and it's making "dry runs" which I've read about on these forums but, well, if it ever happened to me before then I've forgotten about it. Obviously the DD doesn't know it has no DC's left, so, what now? It just makes dry runs until I run out of air? It certainly isn't showing any signs of giving up and going home. :-?

Kielhauler1961
09-20-08, 02:12 PM
It will give up. In my experience once they've run out of DC's they continue to make a nuisance of themselves for a couple of hours at the most and then clear off. Wiat for it to be at least 16,000m away before surfacing. Just keep manouvering to keep your 'tail' pointed at it and cut speed to 1 knot. Go as deep as you dare!

09-20-08, 02:13 PM
Well, why worry about a DD without depth charges, if you have torpedoes... :arrgh!:

nirwana
09-20-08, 02:14 PM
My experience is that it will run over and over u until night changes to day or reversed. Til that point i run in a wide circle with 1kts to maintenance depth til this happens.

:dead: Aaargh....regarding my convoy i dont mind a hurricane but thick fog makes it nasty. I cant see a thing until i litterly run into the target. Need to dig out my hydroattack skills again. At least i see two burning ships from an AI attack as lighttowers from a larger distance.

Kielhauler1961

Well, why worry about a DD without depth charges, if you have torpedoes... :arrgh!:

That means periscope depth where it is too easy for a boat as clumsy as the IX to get rammed. Stay deep and evade, DD's aren't worth a torpedo...

Nicolas
09-20-08, 02:17 PM
DD trhowing me 1607 dc is worth a torpedos, payback! ;)

onelifecrisis
09-20-08, 02:24 PM
Thanks for the info (even as contradictory as some of it was!)

Yeah I thought about torpedo-ing it, but it seems too much like cheating - I'd be taking advantage of the stupid AI and sinking a ship which I wouldn't be able to sink (or at least not so easily) were it not for the bug which causes it to keep "attacking" after it's run out of ammo.

Stoopid bloody AI.

Ommm.
Ommm.
I will not rant about the AI standards of the game industry.

In a IXB/C i can run temporarly at 280m while the repairteam is running around with pattex and a sledgehammer but i usually implode before i get to safe depths in time. The weird situation in my screenshot is caused by temporary glitches of the gfx driver and can be easily fixed by restarting the game.

onelifecrisis
09-21-08, 06:11 AM
I was in an IXB and I play DiD. It's the first time in this war that I've pushed it past 200m. I went to 205, then 210, then 215, then finally 220m, and still couldn't evade the DD and dared not dive deeper. I actually took a little DC damage at 220m (!) but got away with it.

I have "randomise crush depth" checked in SH3C.

I had the same problem 2 days ago, only mine was not a happy ending, it was a career killer.

GWX 2.1, In my Type IIA in the north sea I attacked an English convoy in 1939. It had 4 escorts, maybe 5. It was only 70 meters of water though, I couldn't get away after sinking 2 large merchants.

I spent hours of real life time at the computer using every trick I knew to get away, 4 were hunting me for a while, then 2, then one persistant destroyer stayed on me, even though he was out of DCs, he stayed with me pinging and pinging. After hours of trying to get away i tried to go to PD to try to find a blind spot in the ASDIC, in which, I was rammed and the career lost.

OLC,

One last chance for us Wabos'ed-out u-boaters in such a frustrated state is to give that DD the "horns"!

All you have to do is... Extend both scopes  , ride that guys path from below, blow out that stale, old ballast at just the right moment... and KAPOW!

If all your remaining escort ships of concern in the area are all out of DC's, would you consider dipping under the merchants to make a run out? In this case I could only consider that if a DD has had you pinned under for a long time that they have truly done their job. If you have been stalled your attacks long enough that would put you well out of range of the convoy course. If the convoy is out of sight, just sit still and hope you can come up for air, soon. Even better than that, hope for a passing whale to distract them off of you!

For all peeps encounter the visual parallel universe in some grids i finally found the cause of it in my setup. It wasnt the gfx driver.

It was caused by a bugged modification of scene.dat by the RealWeatherFix2 mod. Deactivating and redoing the procedures fixed it instantly for me. I had to do it while docked trying it midpatrol caused ctds.

B nirwana, what the heck is rong with your sky.

And why a hell u got so surprised now ? :) 220 meters is so shallow especially in 1942. You can go down to this depth even with VII with no damages on a hull and I don;t see anything impossible with that. :yep:

I once sunk to 250 meters with a VIIC having flooding, now then you have to think about to blow some ballast and get those darn floodings repaired ASAP.

I figure if you are engaging convoys after '41 you should ditch the IX. Their profile is too big and they are less agile. I suspect they become a liability in convoy battles once you can't continue doing surface attacks.

As for the DD, its job is (a) keep you away from the convoy and (b) sink you if it can. Its best chance of (a) is to keep you submerged, so hanging around over you is a valid tactic - you can only hold your breath for so long, plus there's the 'psychological' aspect of being harrassed for so long.

Curious to know if you use manual targeting. That makes coming shallow to do a snapshot a much more difficult proposition.

nirwana
09-24-08, 08:22 PM
I dumped autotargetting after one week playing sh3 since i mainly fight convoys where autotargetting is less reliable due to zigzagging after being spotted or the first target got hit.

My thoughts exactly. IRC ASW planes did the same thing after dropping their payload, sticikng around for as long as they could to see what would, er, pop out (pun intended)?
