View Full Version : Game: Rate What The Person Above You Is Listening To

JHuschke

Alright this is a simple little game I saw on another forum and thought I'd bring it over here, basically you just rate the track the person above you is listening to on a 1-10 scale and explain your reasoning if you like then post your own song.

The rules:
You must post artist name and track name.
You must provide a URL to listen to the track (YouTube, MySpace, etc).
You cannot rate your own tracks.
And of course no extremely negative comments if you dont like a persons song.

I'll start>

Sounds like fun. I'll bite.

Ramstein-Ich Will: 7/10

Reason: 5 points for music, 4 points for being in German to make it sound more awesome, -2 points for not being country music. :D

I'd rate it 3/10. Why? It's fairly bland in terms of gothicness and nowhere near dark and gloomy enough to be really interesting, but it's still better than watching paint dry.

I can't stand this song but it's topical and I'd like to see someone rate it anyway:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIUPCfIihQ4

I'm going to say 8/10 because I LOVE medieval stuff and I love The Ring Cycle !

Only the libretto of Carmina Burana dates from feudal-age Europe, and is modified to suit Carl Orff's purposes. The music was completed in 1936.

Der Ring des Nibelungen is not medieval, although the libretto was based on Richard Wagner's interpretation of various Nordic Sagas, was also heavily altered to suit his political and philosophical tastes, many of which shifted drastically after he broke from the work in 1867, just after completing Act II of Siegfried. One may note a distinct change in compositional technique and philosophical direction beginning in Act III and running through the whole of Götterdämmerung, as it was not until 1869 that he had resumed work, and by that time, both Tristan and Meistersinger had been completed, and Wagner had become a thorough Schopenhaurian.

Takes off a bit slow, when the beat takes off it has some good passages, a bit too much on the experimental side, cheesy ending

I don't like tracks without vocals so I'd have settle with 6/10.

This thread is a clash of styles anyway, so I will try to review this track though it's definitely not my style.

I can understand why people got so attached to the Rolling Stones if they grew up with them. It does not give me such a kick to listen to them like you do, but I still discern that they could express a desire for freedom in a more uncompromising way than any other band from their time, and that they were thus revolutionizing music.

Having said that, it's always a big difference if you hear something for the first time, and it must have been great to have lived during that time and listened to the Rolling Stones, or later, the Sex Pistols.

But I grew up during the 80s and the tracks that were revolutionary during the 60s and seventies had become a sort a background noise by that time, some times I even felt they were annoying me.

Now my most unqualified rating for this track. Hm it's different. I don't think it is one of the best songs of the Rolling Stones, in fact I a m finding it boring, it's not radical like some of their other songs amd more like a blues song. After long consideration I give it a 6/10. I don't like the Stones, in particular I don't like Blues, but they still made some great music.

Ok here's my song. Some might know it already. But I couldn't stop listened to this sound some months ago.

I'm 35 but I could never get into much from before 1980, exceptions were David Bowie, The Clash and The Stranglers. I also like Beatles songs but that was when I was 8.

Maybe I never liked older stuff because it was all over the radio when I was a kid, and I was alread fed up with it when I began to develop a real interest for music.

Since no one gave a comment... That track specifically 5/10, But overall album 9/10, Crystal castles rock! (Canada has been pumping up some vicious bands over the last 5 years or so...)

As for Cath Coffey & Terranova , I'll rate it for a 5ver in ten (again, 5 is good on my list, anything I don't like or consider bad gets a 0 rating, 1 is like a C-:|\\ )

And now for something completely different...

Really nothing new but my favorite one from Fettes Brot: Schwule Mädchen

Yeah, Hamburg. I am almost certain we were once in that club. My friend almost got smacked up by some Russian.

GE 6/10, though industrial music is not my cup of tea. Did like the beats however. Just because you do not like a particular genre of music it does not disqualify someone from being objective about it. ;) Just give it an honest listen and go with the emotions it produces inside of you other then dislike or hatred.

I will post an industrial song that I like: Jesus built my Hotrod.

Warning: the video is kind of eclectic, may not be suitable for anyone here. I chose it because it is the unedited version of the song. This may have been the inspiration for the blue man group...:rotfl:

My likes can be weird sometimes. The Yardbirds had three different lead guitarists, all destined to become legends: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Beck is probably the least well-known, but I like his group over Led Zeppelin.

Sorry for the bad luck in getting me as the reviewer. 1/10, no hard feelings, right? It's just not my style:p

And now for a piece by Joe Diffie; John Deere Green

I couldn't find a video that didn't have some bs collage of John Deere tractors, so close your eyes, sit back, and imagine a simpler time in a rural town......

Starting with a 10. Minus 3 for 80's canoe guy, minus 5 for making me wait for like 5 minutes to hear some music, only to be rewarded with an abrubt end. Plus 2 for it being Pink Floyd, which I don't like, but I understand that they are respected. Final score 4.

Sorry, some of us just don't have any appreciation for music that was great back when everyone was on acid:D

I'm just kidding, but I don't see the appeal. Blame it on my poor taste in music.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QYEC4TZsy-Y

Lou is mainly a poet here. He does an interesting job with the lyrics. I think the music mix could've done better at understating the obvious pitch faults in his singing. He has a nice speaking voice, and the music gives a good texture, but he should either stop trying to articulate his pitch so much and just speak rather than sing, or the music should be mixed upward a little.

Still, once you get used to it, he's got a great talent for lyrics

5/10 presentation, 9/10 for the actual composition (both music and lyrics, not counting the vocals) = 7/10 overall.

***

Keeping with the theme of male vocalists with unusual (and beautiful) voices, original lyrics, and good use of music as texture, here's David Sylvian as featured in Nine Horses - Darkest Birds.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=IyObwXNlql8

I think he does a somewhat better job here of managing his voice's natural timbre instead of trying to be melodic.

9/10 Pink Floyd had a style and sound all their own. I still wonder what direction the band would have taken if Syd Barrett didn't go down his unfortunate path.

Speaking of music legends. How about this guy performing to packed stadium, at 60 years old, singing a 35 year old song, and still rocking and energizing the crowd. His style was as unique as Pink Floyd's.
