Hello all, just started playing SH3 and I love it just joined the forum and I have a major problem! I noticed tons of threads concerning Crashes to Desktop problems on the forum but none were able to assist me so I apologize if this topic is getting old  . Well I played stock SH3 for a little while and then attempted to update to GWX but I have kind of a weak system so GWX did not work as well as I had hoped so I uninstalled it and tryed to play stock SH3 (which runs fine) again but now ever since I deleted GWX I get a CTD before I even get into a new mission! The CTD occurs after you exit the "Office" menus (where you customize your U-Boat and such) and attempt to go onto my next mission. I have NEVER had a CTD problem until after taking out GWX and I am sure I screwed something up along the way lol. I have tryed many things even uninstalling and reinstalling the stock game itself and even a system restore and I am out of options! I am running VISTA but have had no previous problems, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Was the date and time of the RESTORE point earlier than when you installed GWX?

Be VERY carefull how far back you go, because it can have other "ripples" to other software.

On your CTD, does it just buzz out to the desktop with no message as to WHY the CTD happened?

Have you re-installed the patches to SH3 to "pre" GWX to run plain vanilla SH3?

Did you delete the SH3 folder in My Documents after un-install / before re-install?

Well when I installed SH3 from the CD I believe it was patched to a very current version 1.4 I believe but I'm not sure, however when I installed it the first time I could just play I didn't have to install any patches. Also there is no explanation, just a CTD and says that SH3 has shut down.

Sorry to hassle you,

But is it practical for you [that is a restore point less than two weeks old] to use the RESTORE point of Vista to Pre-GWX/ Pre-SH3? If so, uninstall SH3, goto the SH3 folder in Documents - delete it, then use the RESTORE point and give another try on the reinstall?

PLEASE be very carefull on our advice. I'd feel more comfortable that you had a TOTAL backup of your rig BEFORE trying ANY of this. :shifty:

Yes I restored to a point prior to installing GWX and deleted all semblance of SH3 (as far as I know) but still I get the CTD.

U still have account control enabled? If so turn it off. It serves no purpuse for stand alone pcs but cause trouble for sh3 by using lockers for every registered login user of a vista user system.

Your might click on the details of the Windows screen that come up. The next screen might show you what program or file caused the crash. It will be near the top of the box.
