OK i was wondering, is it possible to make a submerged sonar attack without using the periscope and purely relying on sonar from a depth of say 60ft-100ft? If it is could somebody please explain the steps in doing so? Any help would be great! I've read accounts of this being attemped/done during WWII, and think wow can this be done in the game with any ammount of sucess?

Well thanks for any help on this question

Basically just set your torpedos to fire at a specific point. Move your boat so that it's in line with that point and your target's projected path will take it past that point and at the specific bearing returned by your sonar operator, fire.

I did that once and it actually worked! It was horribly rainy and foggy and I simply couldn't get a visual lock on my target. I managed to snatch a few position glimpses at him, but nothing more than a second or two. But I used that to figure out the direction and path of my target. Moved into a 90 degree side shot position, submerged and just had my sonar guy follow the contact. When he said the ship was at bearing 350 I fired two torpedoes at it. One managed to hit just barely! But it was enough to stop the ship so I could finish it off with the deckgun now that it was on fire and I could see THAT through the fog. :)

Thank you Q3rark. Fortunately we have just doubled the number of sonar only targeting techniques and there are two: the original one by WernerSobe and my Dick O'Kane Sonar Only Technique. I think that both of them are the most fun you can have in SH4. There's no payoff like the one you get from sinking a target you've never seen. They are the most fun you can have in Silent Hunter.
