I was playing about with facebook and found there was no subsim.com group - so I created one as an experiment, and to see who'd join it :p

Just search for subsim.com in the groups section and you should find it - it's open to all with no application required.

With face book, strangers can learn about you and steal your soul. :nope:

Strangers can't steal your soul as Facebook does that as soon as you sign up

Now we must crush and destroy the foul travesty, to arms!

Facebook is where insecure people go in order to assemble virtual friends. :rotfl:

You know how some people spam comments on forums in order to get their post count up? Facebook is similar. It is a way to get your virtual friend count up.

Helps some people's self image. I prefer actual friends I spend time with.

Snicker.

And Tony would like to see you too, but I thought that was common knowledge.

Hey, we're not virtual, we're just slightly out of touch with reality

Virtual friend blah de blah: It depends on the individual - personally, I use it to keep in touch with my real-world friends - I don't think I have more than a couple of friends on there who I don't know in real life. I know Lesrae in real life and, like me, he uses it to keep track of a scattered, disparate array of very good old friends.

Identity theft blah de blah: Like all technology, if you don't know how to use it, it can be dangerous. When you sign up, you can decide levels of privacy for all manner of things, to the extent that only your friends would be aware you'd even signed up. If you don't take the time to configure those things to your liking then no; they won't be configured to your liking. Despite all the security threats associated with going online at all, you still do, because you take the time to address those issues.

Generic religious fear: You're on your own with that.

A good friend of mine once told me he sometimes wishes that there was a bit of the net left for us geeks; somewhere that wasn't over-crowded with the general populous. Facebook isn't that, and that's what makes it so ubiquitous - I want to see my friends' photos, know how their kids are getting along, keep in touch with people I don't see so regularly, etc - what better way?

I use my phone for that...or email. When I want to chat, harrass, mock, f'with, corral, make fun of my virtual friends...well you can find me here.

Well with Facebook I found some RL friends I lost touch with, and use it so I can keep in touch with colleagues and former classmates. I keep the apps to a minimum otherwise. I actually joined the group of another forum I belong to, and guess what? It's dead! The FB group not the forum. It seems redundant in that respect.

Personally I don't see anything bad in joining such groups but I would never sign up there. About a year or more ago someone introduced page called "our class"-you could meet old school mates etc. Later on "our cell" appeared where you could find inmates you were "sitting" with. Suddenly a few Germans bought our class which caused a big withdrawal of people there.
