This maybe already answered somewhere but i cant find, if a destroyer get close enough he start pinging i find you even if you are at 250 ft deep and silent running and all stop, what is this? its hardcoded maybe? hope not

Have you already been detected once??? If so it's possible that one DD is constantly pinging you, and one, is listening for you to run.

Don't know about hardcoded, but if they are pinging it doesn't mean they found you, but all stop is worse that moving some. Even if it's only one knot at least you are changing position. Stay in one spot and they find you, they won't lose you since you are not moving.
Especially if you are in the middle of a convoy, you are moving, they are moving, they may have to turn or backup to avoid another ship. There are a lot of reasons to keep moving. If they drop DCs, it takes a while for them to get to 250 ft. You can move enough to avoid them but it is harder to get going from 'all stop'. (If they DC me, it's Ahead Flank) With the explosions and the fact they are moving away from you, it's easy to get lost again, then back to slow and quiet, make them find you again.
If you are all stop, and they are in the right area they will find you, sooner or later.
You are free to do what you want, but in my opinion instead of trying to change the game, change your tatics. It may not work all the time, but you will enjoy it more when it does.

Thanks for the answer, but i mean, i was not detected just waiting for the escorts pass over. About avoiding depth charges, in 2 opportunities i evaded dc attacks until they got emptied of dc's (like 3 hours trying to evade) then i torpedoed them of course.

Being at silent running and at all stop wont do squat to stop them from picking you up on active sonar. It'll only make you harder to detect on passive.
You keep moving. Even at 2 knots but you're moving. You try to present the smallest profile to the DDs (not only the pinging one(s)). That means that you're not only moving but turning too. I turn towards or away from the DDs (trying to bring them at bearing 0 or 180) even if they're on passive (you never know when theyll go on active sonar). It's these turns superimposed on my general escape direction that make up my "avoid tactics". Mind you that having some speed doesn't mean that your motors are running continuesly. You can go at 1/3 get your speed at 3 knots, stop the engines put them back on when speed drops at 1 knot. And of course the deeper the better (ehm ... please don't misinterpretate that last phrase eh! )

Maybe my english is crap  :rotfl:
I saw a convoy for example.
I get into they route, and stay there submerged and silent.
I know they not detected me.
When the escort get close, (like 300 yards) suddenly starts pinging and i got discovered how?
No matter, it seems it not happen to you and i dont know how i noticed this issue.:hmm:
The pinging does not mean that you're automatically detected. Pinging followed by a quick echo... maybe.
I don't know what actually invokes active radar sweeps in the game, but I don't think that it is unrealistic for an escorting DD to go on active sonar from time to time. Maybe it's part of the escort's routine, maybe it got you on its radar before you submerged and went to some form of alert, maybe it got you on passive sonar before you went silent... (BTW Do you have an estimate about how far was the convoy just before you submerged?)
OR
maybe the game/mod is doing a favor to the AI (that's always a possibility eh)!
but I don't think that what you describe is all that unusual!
I usually get "into" convoys more or less as you describe (head on, aligning to the middle of the convoy, starting for periscope depth after the leading escort passes over me). The pinging usually starts after the torpedoes get in the water and mostly after the merchants have moved a bit and the escorts/DDs have some manuvering space... sometimes no pinging at all.

Your not sitting there with the scope up are you? :hmm:
What I do is work my way into position, submerged at around 80-110 feet, around 1,200 yards or so out ahead slow. Follow the sound contacts till they are at or near the 'optimum' angle.
I get most of the settings on the torps ready, bring her up to periscope depth, open all the doors, work out the last second firing solutions, let the torpedoes rip.
Then I lower the scope, take her deep, ahead slow, with a hard turn to port or starbord.

Hi Nicolas,
It doesn't look like you ever got the answer you were looking for. I've been having the same issue and it's been driving me crazy. After searching a while, I found the following thread:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=139640
Looks like it's just a part of the game.

in a way it is hard coded, in the design of the game to make sure you are challenged in the game. the game sometimes cheats, by that i mean a DD will run in and stop on a dime right on top of you when there is no way you could have been detected. it doesnt happen all the time but it does happen often so just expect to be detected and plan your attack so you are ready to evade.
this is how they wanted it so dont expect it to be fixed.

Ubi!!!!! make the final patch please!
Ver. 1.5 aka Uboat add on is considered (by ubi not necessarly the devs) the final patch.
Fortunatly for us there are a lot of dedicated modders out there.
On the topic, occassionally escorts will break away at random from their fleet on sort of a scouting run. If your in the wrong place at the wrong time their scouting runs can be sucessful.
As mentioned before even if your at silent running, deep, and slow, that does not make you impervious to active sonar. Been many a time where I simply had to let a convoy go due to being picked up early on and had to go into evasion mode.
Best to run away and live to fight another day. Hang in there the escorts eventually have to give up and re-join their fleet. Sitting at a dead stop just makes their job easier.

So, Japanese destroyers pings all the time, but allied destroyers not? how the destroyers if you play german behave? they ping? if someone is making an atlantic campaign this issue can be problematic.

Look! Right next door is the "Are Japanese destoyers too good at detecting your sub??" thread! I'll bet that loudmouth Rockin Robbins left the answer over there.
