Seems Russia can do anything it wants without one cry for UN sanctions from the usual bunch of whinning eurogirl hypocrites. Not even an accusation of Russia making a unilateral decisions in securing winter supply of oil. Hmm I wonder if the silence just implies war for oil is acceptable to you?

Once again silence, but this time it's Southpark, something must be done! Yes, yes somebody must do something. Quickly now paste some news articles in protest otherwise next thing you know North Korea might see weakness and start their nuclear weapons production program again.

:p

Perhaps the Russians are proposing to ban anything that hasn't been funny in the last five years. :smug:

For the quoting imparired::D

"Our complaint is against a lot of cartoons, but this one was from 'South Park' season three, episode 15," he said.
The episode, called "Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics" on the cartoon's website www.southparkstudios.com (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/nm/en_nm/storytext/russia_southpark_dc/29010315/SIG=111cri515;_ylt=Ao_0r8sJof9cAlebtb.m7PrK.nQA/*http://www.southparkstudios.com), first aired in December, 1999, and features a singing piece of human excrement.
"It's one thing if they are on cable TV and viewers pay money and make a conscious choice. But young children should not be able to turn on the TV after school and watch this. They need to be defended," Bendas said.

I don't care who brought up the problem, I can certainly agree with the sentiment in the last paragraph.

The leader of an evangelical group saying that "children must be protected", how's that for irony :D

I don't get it. It would be less ironic if he called for children to be run over by busses?

Churches aren't prosecutors. Prosecutors feel that it warrants looking into. Church people may have asked that it be looked at, but the church isn't enforcing anything. Church members are as entitled to complain about anything atheists are aren't they? Or should only the "enlightened non-Christian" be allowed to voice concerns or lack thereof?

Come on, I didn't even imply that. Of course they have the right to do whatever any person is allowed to do. It's just ironic that a religious group that doesn't mind preaching to children gets worried about the effect of a cartoon on said children.
Look at what you just said. Are you insinuating that a religious group preaching to children is necessarily harmful? Are you insinuating that religion is necessarily harmful?

Edit : Don't bother answering, I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is already.

You so wish I had said that :)
As I said above : "Protection of children is up to the parents".

Edit : Don't bother answering, I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is already.
Now you're psychic

I notice you didn't answer the question though...

Nope, more like psychotic:D

I know what you said earlier, my statement was made regarding the following:

It's just ironic that a religious group that doesn't mind preaching to children gets worried about the effect of a cartoon on said children.

Maybe I'm taking the statement too literally, but all I have to go by are the words that were typed.

True. The creators ran out of ideas long ago.

What's the big deal. If it was a different country would it warrant a thread here with all the same conotations as this one was started or is it because it is Big Bad Russia. It's not like the UK, US and other countries haven't banned programmes before beacuse they thought they were offensive. Mary Whitehouse anybody?

also The Life of Brian was banned by several councils in Britain for blasphemy..

Ok, I mean, IMO religion has far more bearing than a stupid cartoon so yeah in that sense that's ironic. Especially when considering the article, to me it sounds more like "we're offended and we're using the children protection pretext as extra weight on the case". Of course you're free to have a different interpretation, at any rate what we both think doesn't matter that much.
Bottom line should be that parents decide what's good or not for their children. If a religious group wants to sue for "incitation to religious hatred", fair enough.. But seeking the ban of the cartoon so as to "protect the children", come on.
I beg to differ as to whether what we think matters or not , it matters a lot to us:D You took the article one way, I took it another. We're each entitled to interpret it as we wish. We are each entitled to interpret the intentions of the religious group in our own ways. You choose to interpret their intentions in a negative manner, I choose the positive. We're probably both wrong:D

Kind of a non-story, really. For the record, I love South Park, a healthy dose of cultural and political irreverence goes a long way.

Oh, and regarding priests being worried about childrens innocence, it makes me laugh.

I heard something along the same lines a few years ago on voice of Russia. They were bemoaning the fact that the classic Russian cartoons weren't popular anymore and couldn't compete with the Western cartoons. vis-s-vie Cheburashka.

Cheburashka is great and the old Soviet Cartoons and animations are way better than most western stuff. There are a few modern things too.

Coming from a religious and a godless atheist, the opposite would have been surprising :D:up:
:rotfl:Now you're psychic:D BTW I won't always defend a religious point of view because many of them make no sense whatsoever.
