View Full Version : A glimpse of the future of oil producing Arab countries

The uncomfortable truth for Abu Dhabi is that one day the oil will run out. Although in the emirate’s case that is predicted to be more than 90 years away, there is always the prospect that the world economy’s thirst for it will be slaked sooner by clean technology.
That this is a motivating factor in the minds of the Abu Dhabi royal family can be seen in its investment in alternative energy. Two years ago it launched the $250m Masdar Initiative which is pouring money into solar and other clean energy sources. Outside Abu Dhabi City, ground has been broken on a carbon-free eco-city for 50,000 people which has been designed by Norman Foster, the British architect.

Gulf States Warned of ‘Asian Tsunami’
Arab News

JEDDAH, 28 January 2008 — Bahrain’s Labor Minister Majed Al-Alawi has warned of an impending “Asian tsunami” in the Gulf states because of the heavy dependence on foreign workers.

In an interview published in Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper yesterday, Al-Alawi said the presence of almost 17 million foreign workers in the Gulf, mostly from the Indian Subcontinent, represented “a danger worse than the atomic bomb.”

“I am not exaggerating that their number will reach almost 30 million in 10 years from now,” he told the Arabic daily.

Alawi said that Gulf nationals were “lazy” and “spoilt”, relying on foreign workers for the simplest of tasks.

“A lord with billions in Great Britain cleans his own car, whereas people of the Gulf look for someone to hand them a glass of water from just a couple of meters away. If the governments do not watch out for this tsunami of foreigners, the fate of this region is very worrying,” he said.

Alawi has called for the residency of foreign workers to be limited to six years but the leadership of the Gulf Cooperation Council has not followed up on the proposal. “The commercial lobby thwarted the project which was in the final phases before being implemented,” he said.

Alawi called for the “sponsorship” system to be abandoned, saying it left foreign workers at the mercy of the individuals or institutions which employ them. He called for governments to oversee visas and work permits to protect the rights of foreign workers, in a region which human rights organizations have often accused of abusing employees in slave-like conditions.

What are you?
So? If America or Europe was a desert like Africa we would also be living in straw huts. The wealth of the world is distributed the way it is mainly because of the resources that are available in different regions. Are you implying that we are superior in some way? We also have the wealth that we have because of the resources that we have available. All I see from you is bitterness about how they can work less than us. There are people in the world who work harder for less than you.

I was just referring to the article.

UNTIL the middle of the 20th century, the economy of Abu Dhabi was sustained by camel herding, growing dates and vegetables, fishing and pearl diving. Poverty was widespread. Most of the population lived in homes constructed from palm trees; the wealthy lived in mud huts.

Thats total BS, look at the map, its only a part.

Are you implying that we are superior in some way? We also have the wealth that we have because of the resources that we have available.

I dont care what you call it. But if you dont see the positive effects of Western culture and civilisation on increasing wealth you are blind.

All I see from you is bitterness about how they can work less than us.

Its not bitterness, i just see the coming irony. Do you think its cool that they pride in not doing anything? What an inspirational culture and way of life.

There are people in the world who work harder for less than you.

I know, like the slaves doing the work for these guys. That was kinda my point. Duh!

Hong Kong, Switzerland, Japan, Singapore, Lichtenstein, Andorra, Belgium etc.... All rich, all comparitively resource-poor. Economic freedom, trade and social stability have much more to do with prosperity than resources.

Are you implying that we are superior in some way? We also have the wealth that we have because of the resources that we have available.

But Russia, which has more resources, remains poor. Thinking like that is what makes liberals so dangerous to the economy.

What's funny is that it gets derailed by someone who didn't even bother reading past the quoted bit before reacting. The article is precisely about Abu Dhabi knowing perfectly that oil will run out eventually, and gives some clues about their economic and investments policy for the future to precisely overcome their need of natural resources to make money in some interesting ways.
But it's so much funnier to just keep it at "without oil they will get back to stone age !" indeed :yep:

Agreed

Might as well say....they'll go off and buy another country and use their original land as a summer holiday resort.

They have plenty of time to diversify and change/adapt to what will eventually take place.

They certainly have the money to try anyway.

Well money is a resource in its-self. You know, money produces more money etc. So they may become "oil-less" but not "resource-less". BTW arab funds are already present in many european countries/economies.

Just to get this straight. The "Arabia" country doesn't exist, thus there's no "Arab minister". It sure sound bigger put that way but the guy in question is Bahrein labour minister. Interesting thing, Bahrein has about 2/3% unemployment, that's better than most European countries so I guess that makes us all frickin' lazy (who's that dumb philosopher who said that lazyness is a virtue anyway ?).
Then, you point at the flaws in their economy (which one already, the lazy part ?). Fair enough, I suppose you're more qualified on the matter than a bunch of lazy Arabs sitting on dozens of billions $. You should apply for an economic advisor job over there, I'm sure they pay well.
Otherwise you seem to be good at digging deep, you may have some openings in the oil industry too.

Who claimed it exists? I just pointed that it was etnically Arab minister that called them lazy.

Interesting thing, Bahrein has about 2/3% unemployment, that's better than most European countries so I guess that makes us all frickin' lazy (who's that dumb philosopher who said that lazyness is a virtue anyway ?).

You are aware that most Bahrainians and other Gulf Arabs work in public sector and other jobs tailored for them from the birth? That many jobs arent based in other needs than to provide a reason to transfer money in their bank acounts? That goverment throws money to locals in many different forms? That their productivity is low? Their education and skills are lacking? These societys are not based on merit or ability, they are tribal cultures that revolve around the extended family and its honor.

Then, you point at the flaws in their economy (which one already, the lazy part ?). Fair enough, I suppose you're more qualified on the matter than a bunch of lazy Arabs sitting on dozens of billions $. You should apply for an economic advisor job over there, I'm sure they pay well.

Lets put rascism aside..:know:

You sound to me like you are jealous, which is really sad. A good example of opinions similar to yours(probably based on jealousy or most important greed) were spanish who were such a menace for south americans that certain civilizations vanished by sacrifying themselves to please "angry" gods. You obviously cannot respect other nations and their way of life or the reason they are the way they are, but the true thing that itches you is their wealth, their oil.
Like you are some God because you know what is what holds us to the ground or stuff like that. Go hunt those remaining tribes in the amasone.. Lazy sons of dirty mangrels, if they don't act like us, they should all be sterilised.

What do you mean by education and skill? In my lifetime I met so many "skilled, smart" people, so many I would like to live in some nation somewhere where people lack the skills. You sound like one of those sobs. If you would in the wilderness you would die because you are "skilled", right? Never thought there are other skills other than typing on computer?

How about you tell us why you can drink in your scandi countries only on certain islands(wtf!?), which is very very sad. Because you were so pissed in history that you would all be alcoholics today. But in the gens there is a leftover.. :rotfl: And arabs don't drink?

I read one book from you scandi guys, funky business is called.
Very nice book, after reading the intro I was so p..d off. They are some "funky, smart" Swedish guys that listen to prodigy, they are groovy and they advertise that corporations are great. Everything is funky, educate yourself, mix nations, have the governement from corps, they rule anyway, nevermind these scoundrels work for them, they are funky, also swedish people are so smart because they can adapt. Funky!!

Some of the favorite parts of the book are examples from corps, like when they reduced the number of workers in some department in ford from 500 to 300 and they were celebrating that achievement. But, then they found out the same job in suzuki or whatever was done by 5 people. Wow!! Funky!!! LETS CHOP SOME MORE HEADS. Profit is what drives me. I am extravagant, smart, funky, whatever..
Man, I was so p..d off after reading that book that I would go on and kill every m...ng manager in the world. I don't wonder people in this s..y world get annoyed and kill others, but I wonder how come mass killers kill only innocent people. Idiots. Give those people a chance.

The point is you sound like those idiots, you seem to have that idiotic drive for money, to step on other people to achieve your way and then call it hippy like or something like. No matter the way of other people, yours is the right way!

Then, you point at the flaws in their economy (which one already, the lazy part ?). Fair enough, I suppose you're more qualified on the matter than a bunch of lazy Arabs sitting on dozens of billions $. You should apply for an economic advisor job over there, I'm sure they pay well.

Wow, go tell mom, why didn't you marry a seikh? I mean you are so ridicuolus! Godarn, you sound like that sob that drives a big plane, but his working people in the shops he owns earn less than the 1/10000 of what he pays for fuel. Very nice opinion!

Otherwise you seem to be good at digging deep, you may have some openings in the oil industry too.

From here it looks like your in the hole.:D
