Swedish company Home Energy (http://www.homee%20nergy.se/) recently revealed an innovative wind turbine that spins in a spherical formation. Eschewing traditional rotors (http://www.greenedia.com/sectors/directory/inhabitat/102643) for a sleek orb structure, this beautiful rethinking of conventional wind turbine design utilizes the Venturi principle, which funnels wind within the turbine’s blades. The resulting spherical wind turbine features increased efficiency and lower noise levels - making it ideal for small scale energy needs such as personal home use. Best of all it’s called the Energy Ball (http://www.homeenergy.se/vindkraft.aspx): the fun name is an added bonus.

Most modern wind turbines (http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/06/10/architectural-wind-modular-wind-turbines/) utilize a flat three-blade design, wherein the head of the windmill is directed into drafts by a computer. The tips of these windmills can reach up to six times the speed of the wind. By contrast, the Energy Ball (http://www.home-energy.com/engels/ebv100.htm) is designed to take advantage of the the Venturi effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venturi_effect), which was originally a measurement of pressure created by channeling an incompressible liquid through a restricted section of pipe. This spherical Energy Ball takes those principles and uses them to channel air through its six blades and around its generator.

This results in highly efficient turbine that can take advantage of very low wind speeds. Home Energy (http://www.homeenergy.se/) primarily designs small-scale energy solutions for homes, communities, businesses and public facilities. In my opinion they should also be designing for amusement parks: perhaps these fun pinwheels could help offset the carbon impact of all those funnel cakes.

I actually like the idea, despite not being a proponent of wind energy.

I might even buy one as long as some jacka$$ doesn't try to legislate me into doing so.

I wonder how much they cost?

I wonder how much they cost?Dunno. But anything to cut down on bills every month is a good thing in my book.

Same here, I would be willing to invest in this. It won't supply all my power but every little bit helps.

Do you know DIY? It seems easy to build:hmm:

I am all for this kind of stuff. I think i may go solar though for my house in AR. Subman, remember a couple months back you posted some chunky chicks who complained they could not afford to eat and so forth...? I have a solution that will help our energy problems and will benefit our health care situation. We take these morbidly obese people who alledgedly cannot work and put them on bikes/treadmills hooked up to generators that provide electricity. They lose weight and we get power in return. i wonder if Arnold has thought of this?:hmm:

Domestic energy bills in the UK are rising at an unprecedented rate here in the UK.

It is being suggested that some of the poorest elderly in our society may be faced with the stark choice of eating or keeping warm this winter. :nope:

Send a few million of these to Gordon Brown....he'll pay the bill.

Maybe we should all get together and place an order for these :hmm:. They might be cheaper by the dozen :yep:.

They should attach a mass of these to building the the CBD of Sydney, the wind levels through the streets is incredible!

I would love to get one for my place too, I just want to know how much they cost!:yep:

Heres a link to the company that makes them. I don't read Swedish but maybe there's a price in there somewhere.

Join the club, my home town has a north northwest wind all the year, and very strong! This kind of "windtraps" on top of the buildings would provide much energy!
The downsize is that the goverment would put a high tax just on those things...SS107Mhz knows what I'm refering to!

Yup, on the news they come forth like they're all he rage about renweable anergies, but then came a small town who decided to use the restaurants oill to provide biodiesel for all of it's vehicle fleet, and so they live happily ever after...until the government found out and prossecuted them for not paying the ISP (the tax over OIL[petroleum] by-products)... Didn't even knew frying oil was made out of that... And really thing our country has probably the mst incompetent, negligent, near sighted, just plain stupid sequence of governments since the mid 90 in all European Union... stupid People get stupid Governments...But they are smart enought to keep the people stupid...
