What do you do when your rudder is totally destroyed and visibly missing?? There is no way to replace it.
Well, I had a great career over the last month (in-game) and I ended up going to Midway, refueling and supplying then set out again to make the enemy pay real bad. Since Wake Island was in enemy hands I decided to check it out and sneak in by night.
To make a long story short, a spotting plane found me and dropped two bombs of which one landed directly on my rudder and propellers. I repaired the props, but the rudder was beyond repair. So my ship is now stuck going due west where an enemy task force is moving through with no way for me to turn.
This is fun and very interesting.
Thanks.

I regretfully inform you that you are totally screwed :damn:
In real life you could manuver by running the port and starbord screws at different speeds.
In the game there is no individual motor control unfortunatly. No way to manuver, no way to get home.
I hope you have a save point not to far behind the unfortunate loss of the rudder. :-?

1. Please don't use that color for yout font. It is impossible to read the text (disappears into background) without highlighting and eveyone's time here is at least worth 500 U.S. dollars per hour.. so taking time to highlight it,in order to read it, costs about a buck 50 then...;) :D
2. Rudderless with a previous save ..Reload....start playing from there...
3. Rudderless without a save....goose is cooked ...new career time
OR
4. Search the forum for a way to hack your saved game file. I have heard it is possible to do that; but can't personally vouch for it, as I always do frequent unigue save games each patrol and so have no need.
Good luck.

on a totally hopeless cause i'll give you the slim chance to save yourself.
you can only go straight so go either forwards or backwards (in the direction of a friendly port) untill you can bump land (very gently of course at 1kt) this is the only way you can change direction and its pure luck but maybe you can get close enough to a base to dock. i never had the patience for it so i dont know if you can dock without a rudder but my guess is the game wont care.

How deep is the water under you? Could you dive and touch bottom to turn?

Hmmm..guess you just wait for the wind to push you or sit there forever until the UAF finds you..or just..tell your crew to commit suicide with you!

Bon Juvie... heh....
Hes talking about a somewhat questionable fictional film U-571 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-571_(film)
Not having individual controls of the screws let alone the engines has been on my pet peeve list for a very long time. For a number of reasons.

The water below me is over 200 in depth...I'm directly north west of Wake Island, about 1 nautical mile roughly. If I dive too deep, I'll kill my crew, if I stay on the surface the task force will surely kill me. I'm showing 32% damage to my sub, however all my instruments are repaired, just the rudder is missing, LOL.
Is there a way to send a distress call out to a friendly support vessel? I'm really enjoying this scenario as it would certainly occur in real life and there must be some measure I can apply without scrubbing this career and beginning a new one.

No this is not modeled in the game. Also as I pointed out above you would still be able to navigate by adusting propeller speed which is not modeled either.
So you have three choices. hack the files, declare the crew lost and start a new carrier, or roll back to a previous save.

Pssssst.....
I'd go for the last option mentioned by Steamwake.

I read a story in a US Submarine Veterans quarterly ( cant recall the name ) where a the crew of a crippled submarine patched together a sail and stringed it up with a periscope mast. It was a dismal failure because they were fighting with tide and predominant winds.
Eventually a Jap destroyer forced them to surrender, I believe the sub was scuttled.
Does'nt help you here but I thought it was an interesting anyway.
Rudder Destroyed, What Do I do now?
Slap on the suntan. :sunny:
This needs a mod. Since the port/starboard screws thing is likely not possible, I'd go with making the rudder indestructible. Perhaps there is a way to have it damaged so that it functions less well, but always functions at some level.
Sorta like there should be one indestructible diesel since fleet boats had 4 plus a charging engine, wrecking all so that none could be fixed with parts from the others is so unlikely as to be impossible.
