Hmm. Talk about making dual use technology.... Reactors for power, and now sats in orbit.

Iran has the technology to develop satellites and would soon send a communication satellite into the orbit, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said, official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.

"Iran has obtained the technology to build satellites and will use its know-how to launch its first remote sensing telecommunication satellite into space," the president told a gathering in the central Iranian province of Arak on Saturday....

Perhaps the Iranians will launch one of Subman's faster than light spaceships because they read about the technology in an internet forum....
:rotfl:

Then they will found new Mecca (like in Riddick).

Probably explode on the launch pad or crash in mid air.

They're fast turning into pariahs with most countries...at least those that are of any potential help to them :hmm:

You can just imagine it......the big day of the launch and all the worlds media tuned in with their cameras.

The rocket engines start and lift off commences.....two minutes later whilst still in camera range, a patriot missile is seen bringing it down and the official Israeli line is...."our anti missile defence shield was on auto pilot that day"

I own a big 'coffee-table book' called The Home Planet. It has dozens of very large photos of Earth taken from space, interspersed with quotes from people who've been there. At least one Muslim astronaut came back a changed man, saying things like "I looked for the borders between my country and Israel, and I realized there aren't any."

On the other hand I haven't read about any of those guys becoming crusaders for peace.

Well it was the ballistic missile technology that fueled the early space race between the US and the Soviet Union.

Up until Saturn all our boosters were also military rockets. Vanguard was an oddity since it was built by the NRL.

If you can put something in to orbit you can bring something down from orbit or sub orbit right where you want it to land. :yep:

It was a comment about Werner Von Braun's dream of reaching space. Well he did reach space... on the way to London....:dead:

Well he reached spaceish.

The boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and "space" is, by agreement, defined by the Karman Line which is at 100KM or 62.1 miles. This definition is the one recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which is an international standard setting and record-keeping body for aeronautics and astronautics.

The V2 rocket operated at an altitude of 83 to 93 KM or 52 to 60 miles

So Werner baby was close but no schnitzel. :nope:

Given the definition that space "starts" at 100 km

What was the first rocket to go higher than 100 km? :know:

People find any reason to express some old fashioned racism or let's call it bashing to not hurt some sensibilities, or maybe it's just an example of humour gone bad. People should be aware that there's something like 50 communication satellites orbiting around the earth, from lots of countries and private companies, for, you know, cell phones and that kind of things. Would it not be from Iran, it would be a total non-event, but since it's Iran there's no need to even think more than 1 second, there's got to be something fishy.
If it reassures you, think of it the McCain way : more cell phones, more stupid car accidents, less evil Iranians to threaten the oh so free world :know:

How many times has the US launched a communications satellite and the world speculates that it's something else? It works both ways. Of course no one is going to advertise that they are launching anything but a communications satellite.

That was exactly the point of my post, there's everything but speculation in this thread.

Point taken:D I read the part about "would it not be from Iran" wrong perhaps?

That's it! Mikhayl your brilliant! Yes! Let's get Verizon and AT&T involved to help the Iranians place a whole bunch of comsats up! The more comsats, the more capacity for cellphone service and the more cellphones in use. Then, get Ford and General Motors to move their SUV plants to Iran and sell big, top heavy SUVs that tip over in a slight skid.

The Iranians will use the cellphones in the SUVS. The SUVs will crash and burn...

Iranian "problem" solved!
