View Full Version : Anyone have any tips for the AA gunnery exercise?

I started a new career with GWX2.1 (I've only done the training missions so far but it looks great...I can't wait to get further into it). Anyway, my best score on the AA exercise was "Average." I can't seem to get through it without at least one gunner going down. Any tips? I'm trying for "Excellent" across the board.
I've tried crash diving and coming up a bit further away, staying at flank and swerving like a madman, turning into bomb runs to try and throw off the pilots...

1. ahead flank
2. hard to port
3. order the watch officer to man the flak gun
4. order the watch officer to instruct the gunners to target only incoming targets
5. order the watch officer to instruct the gunners to fire at short range
6. form a damage control team and stay on top of critical damage
7. when any gunner dies replace him promptly
8. dont man the gun yourself unless you are absolutely sure you can hit the target***
9. hard to starboard for about 20 seconds
10. hard to port for about 20 seconds
11. repeat #s 9 and 10 until either dead, or the lesson is over.
good luck

Thanks, I followed your instructions and managed to avoid any heavy damage. I lost two gunners though
Now...if only they could actually hit the Hurricanes...:damn:

its a tough mission... it will take several tries to get it exactly right. you might have to try to hit the hurricanes yourself.
glad the advice worked for the most part.

You could always save yourself the pain, skip the AA exercise and start off with 500 renown

I could never pass the da-- thing. Skip
it and start playing. In game most times
they kill you so I dive and live to fight
another day.
It makes my...... let's say "unhappy" sometimes. This what happened to me twice -
I did shot ordered by BDU sort and quantity of planes ... and nothing happened. BDU didn't noticed that. After aprox. 15 minutes of sailing arround I quited.

Cheat!:D
If you have a stock version of the game installed, just do it there. It will transfer the results arcoss to the GWX version!
I did get an excellent in the GWX version, but it wasn't pretty!

The best I could ever do was average.
I think as long as you've passed the exams that you will start with 1500 reknown in the campaign. I don't believe you will receive any more reknown even if you could get an excellent rating.
I'll give you one tip: dive and stay down. :D That's what you'll be doing in the game, anyway.

If you just do the Navigation lesson & skip the others you'll earn 1500 in renown points. That'll be enough to get you started on a GWX career. You shouldn't "buy" anything until you've completed your first patrol anyway. If you do you might not be credited for anything that you sink on that patrol - well known SH III bug.

Yup! Crash dive right at the start. The exercise isn't worth a bag of soggy chips.
Agree with GoldenRivet, manning the Flak yourself against Aireplanes are useless. Let the experts on board earn their pay. Only manned your flak gun yourself against surface targets.
Like Jimbuna says: save yourself the trouble. On patrol, dive when airpanes show up. Fight them only if incapable of diving--
