I was returning from my 9th, and was sunk about 500 Km NW of Wilhelmshaven by something. It was early in the morning, and last thing that i saw was some boat
(assumed neutral) about 10 Km away from me.
I've set tc to around 64x, and suddenly screen appeared informing me that me and my
crew are dead, and the uboat is detroyed by flooding.
I couldn't belive it, and especialy couldn't explain it.
Was that a mine? I've sailed through that area numerous times and nothing happend.:damn:

Could well be a mine, layed there by the sneaky brits while you where at sea;)

Hmm, I thought that minelaying raids weren't incorporated into GWX.

Damm, what a waste.:nope: That was early in the war (may 1940), sunk about 80000
tonnes in 9 patrols (penetrated into Scapa Flow and sunk a fleet carrier).
Evaded numerous destroyers just to be sunk in home waters.

Were you submerged? It is likely you hit a mine.

I guess we can rule out the airplanes, since your position would be out of range this early in the war. What about that ship? Are you sure it was neutral?

Once I hit "D" key instead of "S" while on high TC, which also caused almost instant death when I hit the bottom.

Were you submerged? No, i was travelling on surface with speed around 10 kts.

As for that ship, i think i can rule him out because i doubt that he can obliterate
my uboat from that distance without my crew giving me any warning.

That rules out the mine.

my uboat from that distance without my crew giving me any warning. Right. And you couldn't go beyond 8x TC if you were attacked, unless you modified the values.

:hmm:

Well, this is getting bizzare, and because i am playing DiD style it really matters.
Maybe there was some conflict between mods... or it was a broken toilet.:rotfl:

Strange. The only place reported with mines in GWX is arounf Helgoland Island. The presense of a ship does throw suspicion on it. It could have been a Q ship.

Moral to the story: Don't go into higher than x1 TC until you have a good idea of who is who in the area.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Was reading this post and another crazy thought broke into my mind saying: When u-boat has an active sonar for searching ships when submerged... was this sonar capable of detecting underwater mines too ? :hmm:

i have struck a mine while surfaced.

it was in very shallow waters in rough seas, doing round about 10 knots. as the bow dipped down into the heavy swell... KABOOM! the boat was heavily damaged, many dead... managed to make it back to port somehow.

and yes, i believe that the sonar could be used to locate underwater mines in real life... but not in GWX though. IIRC the US submarine fleet used this a lot in the japanese home waters to navigate through mine fields. sems like i had heard that some place

Could have been the collision with the ship. Happened to me once in the poor visibility weather.:hmm:

You my friend have just entered the bermuda triangle of the north sea. U boats have gone in and never came out. My sub U45 has gone in (in my case it was eight distroyers) and almost not came out.

It seems that it was a mine after all, as seen here http://212.112.241.171/submarines/?filter=1940.
It shows that i wasn't the only one, as the four other uboats were sunk in the same way.

Mines are scripted into GWX.....a sudden catastrophic event, even at x64 would suggest a mine. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

500km NW of Wilhelmshaven? Seems more like it was a collision rather than a mine at that distance. What year and month was it?

What year and month was it?

It was may 28th, 1940.
The distance is guesstimated, as i don't remember my exact location (somewhere
around quadant an66), because all of that happened in split second.

Well, I took a look at the Kriegsmarine grid map, AN66, and at the SH3 Mission Editor with GWX installed, and lookie there:
